What do you like about your southern city center (downtown area)? Show us pics of your city's downtown.

Huntsvilles downtown is small, but it does have some really cool architecture for the most part, and it has Big Spings Park which is pretty unique. It is also pretty clean and safe btw.

Heres a few older pics I've found.

Mobile's 'city center' has a strong nautical setting, and because of it, there are a couple of interesting transportation structures in the built environment.

And many of those historic buildings have been converted or will be converted into lofts or condominiums. Another thing I like about Downtown Birmingham is all the trees, especially the extensive landscaping along 20th Street. I also like how the way our government and cultural buildings are clustered around Linn Park (city hall, county courthouse, central library, and museum of art).

Well, Rwarky asked for pictures. Here are a few:

Great pics of the 'ham there, Randy! So many beautiful pre-WWII high-rises, I'm sure it's one of the best collections in the south. It's awesome to see those old beauties being renovated and finding new life. Being in the Atlanta area, I like to take day trips to Birmingham, haven't done one in a long time, I think I'm definitely due for another one.
After my stop in Greenville recently, I'm gonna be adding that town to my list of day-trip places as well. Their downtown is awesome!
Chattanooga is also worth a mention, I was there last month for the first time in a very long time and I love how their downtown has developed.

micropundit, I agree completely. I go over to downtown Decatur (I assume you mean Georgia, right?) a couple of times a year and am very impressed with the development there. I love the new condo buildings with street-level retail and the great mix of shops and restaurants.

Where I live, Marietta, is finally heading in that direction, with several awesome new developments in the works -- Emerson Overlook (7 floors), Meeting Park (up to 5 floors), and Washington Avenue Commons (4 floors). Also, the almost-complete Marietta Mill Lofts (4 levels, 5 floors). These are all within walking distance of the square. So nice to see downtown Marietta finally coming alive after so many false starts and disappointments (like the ill-fated 12 story high-rise on Mill street).

Those pictures of home make me, well... homesick.

I love lush greenery in downtown Birmingham. The building stock ain't bad either.

A few shots from downtown Rock Hill. I'm not the best photographer, so don't hold that against me:

Thanks for the great shots of Rock Hill, Krazeeboi! I have never visited downtown RH, so these are very nice to see.

Downtown Greenville is a textbook in urban revitalization. While the city is beginning to emerge as a very competitive short-term destination, many other cities across the nation have come in delegations to learn from the successful urban planning and adaptive growth found here. Once a completely dead road, Main Street today is a thriving corridor full of pedestrians, shops, restaurants, and more. It was recently given the Great American Main Street Award in honor of the tremendously successful achievements over the past few decades. I will let my photos tell the rest (in part)...

Thanks for the Rock Hill photos, KB! I wasn't familiar with that city previously, but looks like a very nice downtown, definitely worth a visit!

Thanks also to Skyliner for the Greenville pics. As I stated earlier, I recently visited downtown G-ville and fell in love with the town and look forward to making day-trips there on an occasional basis.
