shortly after opening
St Pancras station and Hotel, the biggest building in the world when it was completed. However the hotel became obsolete not long after due to inopportune inventions of central heating, electric bulbs, and elevators - and steadily fell into disrepair. By the 1860s the building had been gutted out into a cheap 1970s office block for the transport workers, complete with fluorescent lighting, viny floors and plastic and cemented walls. The vast train shed behind with its acres of glass had been 'roofed over' so it resembled a cave.
Thankfully a decade long restoration project + extension is nearing completion.

I guess the most beautiful building in Mobile would have to go to the new queen of the skyline, the RSA Battlehouse Tower (still u/c). There are a few more that I like, but none like the RSA Tower.

Yep, they are aggresively expanding. In fact, though they are quite behind Starbucks in sales, they are supposedly the second largest coffee shop franchise in the country.

Built in 1993, Phoenix's City Hall has always been my favorite, and it's a beautiful, modern tower that fits function with form. It blends modern architecture with a touch of Art Deco. The interior lobby, which is three stories high, is awesome. Here are some pics:

For unabashed excess, this building never ceases to amaze me. Each time I look at it I find a new feature. As a whole, it's close to overwhelming but in its details, each is a delight.
At 167 m (548 ft), including statue, it is the world's tallest masonry building: the weight of the building is borne by granite and brick walls up to 22 ft thick, rather than steel. The principal exterior materials are limestone, granite, and marble.
The building was designed by Scottish architect John McArthur, Jr., in the Second Empire style, and was constructed from 1871 until 1901 for a cost of $24 million. Originally designed to be the world's tallest building, by the time it was completed it had already been surpassed by the Washington Monument and the Eiffel Tower. With close to 700 rooms, City Hall remains the largest municipal building in North America and maybe the world.
The building is topped by an 11 m (37 ft), 27-ton bronze statue of city founder William Penn, one of 250 sculptures created by Alexander Milne Calder that adorn the building inside and out. The statue is the tallest atop any building in the world. Calder wished the statue to face south but it is a local legend that the citizens of the north side paid a bribe to have it face them.
For much of its history, City Hall remained the tallest building in Philadelphia, thanks to a "gentlemen's agreement." In 1987, it lost that distinction when One Liberty Place was completed. Penn's statue is hollow, and a narrow access tunnel through it leads to a small (22-inch-diameter) hatch atop the hat.
City Hall is a National Historic Landmark. In 2006, it was named an engineering landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
I hope these few pics show-up, it's the first time I've tried this. But pics alone cannot do this showpiece justice.

:previous: I will admit that this building struck me in it's own way as well. I really like the old copper roof. I can't wait to see this thing re-furbished. Get some nice cleaned brick and the elimination of all the broadcast towers and it will look gorgeous. A perfect epitome of the roaring 20's architecture. :)

I don't think everyone from Cincy would agree with me on this one....but this bldg is definately one of my favorites for its beauty. I just love the intricate detail all over the building!!! It is currently occupied by LPK; which is a brand design firm that works primarily with P&G. The interior is even cooler because it is totally sleek and modern, with bright vibrant colors (as you would expect from a design firm). It great contrast, I wish I had some interior pics (great old...with great new)!

I dont know if this is a boring choice or what, but to me its the Tribune building easily. This and the wrigley make the best old school combo in the country IMO.

(pics ganked from the web, sydneyarchitecture.com of all places)So true, very hard to beat combo there. I think Detroits Cadillac Sq. has a pretty nice collection of buildings also. Too bad the Real estate Exchange Bldg. burnt, and the original Pontchartrain Hotel was razed.

Because architects know what is beautiful, much more than some uncultured rube such as yourself or myself, and what is beautiful are formless, lumpy buildings with all sorts of uneccesary angles. Either that, or a faceless box. Architects always know what's best and by God, you'll like it.

yep of course. Money talks. It says "build me cheep, charge me high, fuck you". Emperors New Clothes imo.
I love it how architects use language to describe their buildings. Like a spade is an earth removal avatar for human endeavour.

I cant believe no detroiters think the Masonic temple is worthy. I realize it isnt a skyscraper but its an impressive structure rising out of the ashes of the southern part of the Cass Corridor. It's also the largest masonic structure in the world.

Those two structures aside, I'm totally obsessed with the guardian building. Detroit got the shaft on the AIA 150 without a single mention. A lot of inferior trainstations were included and michigan central could have been on there (so what if its now derelict, the twin towers were on there and they no longer exist.) The fact the guardian building wasnt mentioned was an absolute sham. Clearly the judging was about fame over quality. Detroit isnt a tourist destination so our gems arent worthy to mention.

Spokane's Davenport Hotel.. old by west coast standards it was built in 1914 where it stood as one of finest hotels west of the Mississippi.. It eventually met it's demise and was left abandoned until an local investor purchased it and refurbished it to its original state in 2003 and has recieved national reviews as one of the best hotels in the nation. This renovation has sparked a development frenzy and the area is now know as the "Davenport District" Since then several bars/clubs resturants and a new a 18 floor hotel themed tower addition across the street have been added.

This is my first post here.
While I know that there are many buildings here in Chicago that are considered to be more beautiful than my choice, I will go with this one as a sentimental favorite.
It is the Northwest Tower built in 1928. It is also know as The Coyote.
I grew up just 2 blocks from this triangle shaped Art-Deco style building and some of my earliest memories from childhood are of looking up at the tower from the sidewalks of North Ave. Although the spire tops out at about 200 feet, it is away from the skyscrapers of down town so it dominates the neighborhood.
It has been a constant in my life for over 40 years and it just seems like home whenever I pass it.
I included a shot from inside of the tower looking out towards the Chicago skyline.
