sorry i havent been able to read all 2000 of the posts in the former thread, but is the function of the "screens" on the facade to block sunlight for workers inside? i think the uncovered parts of this building look pretty badass.

Awesome shots!!! Just a quick ots question (may have already been covered). Does it usually take so long to finish this portion of the construction (adding spire)? Or was the building just now topped?

when this building is lit up top to bottom, with the crown, thats when itll show up every building around it. itll be one of the nicest looking buildings anywhere in the city, can you imagine the views from jersey?

Last night I was my aunt's and she has a veiw of downtown from Central Park North. I saw the red light on top of the spire, so now there are three visable 1000 foot structures visable from that view!!! (Empire State Building, Conde Nast Spire and NYT Spire) I can't wait for it to be completed, it looks great.

NYguy did such a good job reposting every photo of the construction - I've decided to add some comments on my latest update.

Update: 11/19/2006
NY Times Tower

In the first few shots, I focused on the ground level work, seldom noticed by the public:
http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/743/nytimes1md0.jpg

The individual crates seem to be numbered for inventory purposes:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/5813/nytimes2xd7.jpg

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/1857/nytimes3nc3.jpg

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/6071/nytimes4cv7.jpg

The huge crane at the top has been the star of the show, so this time, I decided set the focus on the real star:
http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/8806/nytimes5vy2.jpg

The hook that carries all the material to the top:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/6453/nytimes6dz2.jpg

This fish is hooked!
http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/28/nytimes7cs7.jpg

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/7316/nytimes8zn4.jpg

The crane shares the spotlight with the newly added spire:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/5057/nytimes9tp1.jpg

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/4457/nytimes10ai8.jpg

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/5538/nytimes11xt0.jpg

But the spire is the real star of the Times:
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2299/nytimes12pl6.jpg

I just love that crane!
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6849/nytimes13ji3.jpg

A lonely construction worker inspects the area:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/974/nytimes14qh0.jpg

I will miss this crane when construction is done:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/3559/nytimes15rb6.jpg

The next few photos show the newly added hand rails on some of the stairs in bright red:
http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/7931/nytimes16ol1.jpg

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/7443/nytimes17ec0.jpg

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/5716/nytimes18yz2.jpg

The spire as seen from Bryant Park with the ice skating rink:
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5484/nytimes19dp9.jpg

With the Empire State Building in the background, the illuminated lights really shine for the NY Times Tower!
Look carefully in these last few photos for the bright red stairs:
http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/6586/nytimes20lg4.jpg

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/214/nytimes21of8.jpg

I have to say I never bothered to go see this building in person while in the city until a month ago, when I just happened to be walking down a parallel street. I have to say that the building has a look in real life that not even Carlos' or fish's pictures can replicate.

It looks marvellous.

So when do all of those insisting this tower is ugly break down and admit it is in fact brilliant? Or have they embarrassed themselves too much to have the balls?

Not only do I still think it's an awful design, but its actually worse than I thought. I had been holding out hope that the spire would somehow change things, but it hasn't. Still waiting for the completion of the crown, but I'm afraid this building is finished, done in by the rods.

And it's interesting that you chose a lighted picture, which only goes to show what has been repeatedly said by myself and others - that this is a tower best seen at night, when the bars/rods are irrelevant.

Just think - the crown will receive even more bars! :haha:

The pity of it is, it's not bad looking from even the daytime views that minimize the effects of the bars.

I would never have thought such a tower would be so polarizing. It's clear that it's either a head over heels love or a condescending hate for this thing...no inbetween. In fact, I don't think the Freedom Tower has had such nasty arguments for on this board.

Aside from its height the Freedom Tower is a pretty conventional building.

Yeah, but for such an iconic tower one would think it's convention would be more controversial here than just another office tower contributing to the Midtown butte.

Ugh...does anyone else marvel at how uncannily the rods simulate painted gray concrete or buffed sheet metal on a Brutalist/International Style box?

Hell, whatever you say about the rods in general, you have to admit that at least on this side of the facade Piano really messed up the proportions of rod-covered to uncovered facade. i'd also venture to say that the rod spacing (too close) and life-sapping color (french gray) were in the best case unintentional, or in the worst case a deliberate disregard for the public realm.

The building has its moments and its angles, but if this is Piano's "genius," then it's a pretty finicky and unreliable one.

However much I know you dislike this building, one of my biggest peaves is that people always seem to know about how well buildings will age, and that absolutely drives me mad, when the truth is, the future beloved-ness of this building cannot be even guessed. Whooda thunk in 1974 that the WTC would be the most sorely missed buildings in the city in 2006? Or whoodathunk in 1946 that Stuyvesant Town would be regarded as a blemish on Manhattan in 2006? Please, don't play Oracle.

And I'm pissed that Lollipop's getting recladded.

So should they be putting the glass on the top rods on the crown soon? That will also make this building look cooler.. to have the glass and from a distance will really add that extra height on the building since the rods/ waffle-grids are kind of thin. But that will go on soon right?

You Must be thinking about the AT&T Long Lines Building. The Lolipop building is all the way in Midtown/Central Park/Colombus Circle Area.

Daquan13 This building is very important to the city. The fact that the tower and its phone lines are designed to withstand a nuclear blast makes this building quite inpressive. The building can be used as a fallout shelter and be self-sufficient for two weeks in wartime conditions.

Although the building has no windows, I love its location and dark yet mysterious look.

NY Times Tower

Not much happening this week.

The only update is construction of a steel frame around the spire which is hardly worth a mention.

Here is the only update I could provide that shows anything, otherwise the entire structure (glass walls, rods, internal stairs, etc. all remain exactly the same as last week):

Although this isn't a pretty building really, the glass or whatever they are going to put on the rod-grid things, waffle grids, abject mess, crazy rod-things, whatever you want to call them..... what they put on them will definately help define the top of this tower's height and overall appearance.
