That would be a great scenario, one 915 to 950 footer following a 975 footer.

I think Bridgeman's will be awesome because it will look bigger than it really is because it'll be all alone. Maybe it's just me...but sometimes it's looks as if our tallest CC towers don't look very tall in comparison to other city skylines. I was in Tampa this past week and their tallest buildings are about as tall as Commerce Square...but they looked much bigger due to the fact Tampa does not have a huge cluster of buildings in their downtown. The Williams Tower in Houston is a monster to see in person....and when I saw it in person I swore it was way taller than Liberty Place when in fact it's not much taller.

/\ I find density to be more visually appealing than the sunbelt skylines. Granted there is more visual wow when you see a thousand foot tall building surrounded by mere parking lots, but I prefer the intellectual wow of seeing a building I know is incredibly tall only have the top third or half stick out because it is surrounded by block after block of midrises.

Anyway on saturday I went out and really played for the first time with my birthday present that I had bought the week before. When I went out last sunday it wasn't even a full 24 hours old and the pictures showed that.

From 3/10/2007. Vertical panos I stitched together with some software:

You can get a larger and much better quality 1meg version here:

I'm still sorting through the couple hundred shots I took. I'll post some soon.

it will not be all on its own; it's going to be in the same general neighborhood as wfs, trump tower, world trade (if that ever gets built). that whole area is going to have its own skyline.

Bridgeman's is still going to be way taller than any building built in that area by at least 400 feet besides WTS - but I don't see it happening.

Nice to see the glass going higher & higher on CC! It looks like it's almost halfway.

*sigh* I wish I could create an "ignore list" for any post that discusses World Trade Square anymore.

I won't happen it won't happen it won't happen it won't happen it won't happen. Did I mention it won't happen? If only it could be stricken from our collective consciousness. I'm begging: please stop mentioning this ridiculous concept as if it is anything other than pure fantasy. It's like debating about empty space. It's as boring as the debate about Inga.

No, I was referring to WTS (World Trade Center or Square - whatever it's called) as not happening. Swinefeld, I'm one of the few optimists we have in Philly. But Philly Nation leads the pack :D

Bridgeman's is still going to be way taller than any building built in that area by at least 400 feet besides WTS - but I don't see it happening.

I was saying Bridgeman's View will be 400 feet taller than anything built on the waterfront besides the World Trade Center. But we all know World Trade Center is not happening.

I love the glass on this building. When looking at it from afar, it's a darker, transparent silvery green color with obvious banding. When looking up at it from the street up close, it's a light, reflective silvery-blue. I love how the look changes with perspective.

I actually understood that you were referring to WTS given that it was the project you mentioned directly before saying it wouldn't be happening. Not sure why all the confusion.

However while I agree BVT will dominate the NL waterfront and I agree that it may look taller in comparison Lib1 etc., I dissagree on the reasons. You state that it will seem larger than our current signature towers in CC which to you seem shorter than they should. But BVT being 400 feet taller then it's surrounding buildings won't help that. Liberty One is almost exactly 400 feet taller than the buildings which surround it and it is your counter example.

What really makes a building look tall is not the height of the buildings around it but their density. With our downtown towers they are surrounded on all sides. There is no where to really get a look at more than just the top half unless you are standing at the base. BVT will have many of it's views preserved because of the relative low density and mass of the buildings that will surround it. That area of waterfront is going to develop into a "Miami" style skyline for lack of a better word. Instead of tall buildings sitting shoulder to shoulder, they will be seperated by low rise podiums, landscaping, and car friendly streets.

I think it just appears that way. I'm in the Bell Atlantic Tower and there aren't any parts of the crane at ground level. I think it just looks lower because the steel is higher. I talked to one of the construction managers this morning who said the cranes wouldn't come down until they finished the steel up to 57 or 58. You're right though, it does appear lower.

I've been out of the loop lately. I read all the posts since I was in the loop but still.....what's up with the steel? I remember back in the fall, the CC was on pace to be topped out sometime in early February, right? It's the middle of March and the steel up top looks the same to me as did several weeks ago. What's up?

TheOldMan
Mar 17, 2007, 1:21 AM
yeah, i agree with McBane. it appears the steel hasnt moved much. this has been happening to a few notable buildings around the country. another example is Trump International tower in Vegas. it seems to be stuck at the same point for weeks at a time. if this building is to be finished by the fall, they really need to be working 24/7 six days per week for that to happen

H-Ville Man
Mar 17, 2007, 3:41 AM
McBane/Old Man-

Don't forget, the crane cannot operate in high winds (above 40 MPH) and snow/ice play havoc with everything. With the last of the cold, nasty weather hopefully behind us, they will install the steel in no time at all.

Lastly, and most importantly, we are nearing the stage where 1,000 workers will decend on the project to work on the inside. Once that happens, the building will be finished at an amazing clip.

I love this tower, but not so crazy with its location. Philadelphia always had a nicely balacned skyline since the 90's. In almost every direction the Tower is eaither blocking a major Downtown Skyscraper, or riseing directly above one.

But eh, still a great addition to the skyline.

He has just won the suit that some neighboors wanted him to stop building and tear down the new deer fence that is being installed. The ruling said all was legal, and was done pre new ordinance. He is building an 8' black mesh/fence, the new ordinance allows only 6'.

CGII's illustration shows why the 110 ft high public enterence to the train station is the way it is. It's curtain wall treatment is intended to create a interior space which is a quasi outdoor space much like the Pennsylvania plaza of the Kimmel Center by means of all glass walls. The pattern of clear and smoked glass used on the office tower would be absurd here. 30th st station has a clerestory above the main level to bring as much natural light into the station as possible, there was no low-e glass in those days as far as i know. CC attempts the same thing with newer techology and CGII's illusrtation suggests that it will be stuning both from the outside and from the inside.

sasso's pic had me dreaming over how chiseled this building will be...so I had to add to the Comcastic pile of renderings...

so the LCD's will be lit up on this bad boy all the way up?

much like this for example:
http://www.dallassky.com/bldg14.jpg

if so then, DAYUM.

The LED's will only be in the corner shadowboxes and in the crown, so it will probably look more like this:

And green for Eagles' games ;)

Actually the CC is way to classy for tacky Dallas style edge lighting. It will be far more dramatic than that, with the entire inner polygon lit up.

Awkab's awesome rendering of it:

CGII - Thank you. Amazing taste of what is to come.

MJ - Do me a favor and never move, ok? I am not sure how I will cope without your balcony shots.

Sasso - I love the last shot with the cameo by that expanding storage tank right off 95. Because of the trees in the foreground it has to have been taken on one of the little hills in the empty lots between Castor and Lewis off of N. Delaware Ave. How did you get in there? I thought the whole area was fenced off and the little access road has a guard station.

*edit* hah, it seems as I was searching all the way back to page 11 to find Awkab's lighting scheme renderings he came and posted. Thanks for the larger versions, I really think you nailed it.

Oh Snap, I've seen this view a million times, then Comcast pops up, and WOW! The tower really looks massive in this pic, making Philadelphia's tallests look small. I'd never thought I'd see the day a tower would pass One Liberty Place.

At the same time it is quite an eyesore right now, but who cares! Onces its fully cladded the tower will look amazing!

Its opening later this year, right?

I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this but it appears that the north side indent is in place as of yesterday or maybe the day before. I thought this was going to be more than 2 stories tall but from where I was standing this morning, it only looks that high.

I actually just assumed there was the same cutout on each side. But if there were those floors wouldn't have much office space I guess.

Yea.....awkward isn't it? I don't know why they did that......looks kind of lame IMO..... but someday we'll find out I guess. Somehow I don't think it was to squeeze out more office space.

Singlion: Of course. The originals are 3872x2592. Check your private messages.

Sasso: Nice architectural crotch shot.

Regarding the differnt sizes of the keyholes: I assume that they are mostly for aestetics since the design already provides plenty of corner offices. As such shortening the north keyhole (the one with the less spectacular views) increased rentable floorspace.
