The entire plaza area that until now has been used for staging is being cleared.

And, I'm putting it in the front page if I haven't already - for any browsers or newcomers - there will be NO OBSERVATION DECK. This is old.

They are taking down that sample of the building infront of cc.. i guess its not of any use since the glass is going up.
Plus with the building virtually leased up, there is little need for it to show prospective tenants what the finished office space will look like. They will soon enough have actuall offices to show.
I also suspect they need to begin working on the public plaza. That would also entail moving the mock up.
As for the enigmatic blue color in the sass-ified photo above, it is most clearly the indigo reflection from the just set sun. If you look at 2 Logan, you can see the same color reflecting.

No, he is directly east. (well, east along the market street axis, which actually angles about 8 degrees east-south-east) Take another look at the map and you'll see that the BFB really is that far to the north.

Eigenwelt is mostly right, except that I am a little south of the Market St axis. You can tell by comparing the southern edges of the Aramark Tower, Mellon Bank Center, and IBX Tower, which are all roughly along the same line on the north side of Market. I'm at the red dot:

I think the flaw in your reasoning is assuming that the top of the concrete (which is the highest point in that sunset photo) is the highest that Comcast is going to get. The steel is actually going significantly higher than that core... maybe 50-70 feet? I don't know the exact number.
Speaking of which, the steel is now higher than the concrete, as you can see in this shot from today in Red Bank Battlefield Park, National Park, NJ.

It depends on which angle you are looking at. Since comcast is North-West of Liberty 1 it will look shorter from any Photo taken from the South or East.

TheOldMan - I think you have a very good point though; the concrete rise up from JFK about 925 feet (+/- 5 feet depending on your source, I personally put most of my weight on Sasso's quite excellent CC update pic (http://phillyskyline.com/bldgs/comcast/diagram/COMCASTCENTERDIAGRAM_PROGRESS_070422.jpg)) - leaving another 50 feet for the crown. We can look at the overall renderings to eyeball how much taller it will grow, but just for arguement's sake here is a closeup of what we have today!
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/KS1982/CC042906-1.jpg
Looks like we have about one story (~10 feet?) of steel above the concrete - so if you may be so good as humoring me in saying that we have currently a 935 footer as I write, or letting me know where I went wrong, I would appreciate it!
So looking at either the closeup or absolutely breathtaking sunset pic (Amazing BTW!) MJ has above, there's about another 5 stories or around (5*10) 50 feet till One Lib's tip. One Liberty weighs in at 945, or so I'm told, so to your point, there appears to be a significant grade differential, or my math is off.
My numbers are not perfect, but because the entire above-concrete crown will be around 50 feet in height, I'm willing to put some money on the opinion that if you were to take that exact same picture one year from now when happy businesspeoples are habitating the building, it will be a very close match heightwise (closer than their respective blueprint heights show, anyways).
Honestly, I'm not obsessed with CC's height, your post just got me thinking.
Anyways, regardless of numbers that show up on the calculators, it sure is a good lookin'. And in the end, isn't beauty on the outside the most important? It's why I spend so much time and money on age defying cremes.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t161/KS1982/CC042706.jpg
Edit: I didn't realize that these floors were to be 17 feet, thanks for that tidbit of information. Still, I feel that the final result will appear closer than one would have otherwise suspected.
I was also assuming that the distance the photo was taken from will negate the angular height differences.

Exactly.
Looking at MJ's photo, Lib 1 is a fraction closer (east) than CC and as MJ has stated, he is slightly to the south (as is Lib 1) and not due east, bringing Lib 1 a fraction closer still. I do believe that Lib 1 starts at a slightly higher elevation too. So, from the distance that MJ's photo is taken (at a distance where a 30' difference is barely noticeable), that may be enough to bridge the 30' difference and create the illusion that Lib 1 is the same size or slightly taller than CC. If MJ took the photo even a quarter mile north of where he is, CC would appear taller.

kenSchwartz,
Good post. sounds like you know what im saying. true, as others have noted, Liberty One is one block east and two blocks south of CC so even when viewed from the east, it is possible for Liberty One to "gain" some "apparent height" with reference to the Comcast Center. I was looking at MJ's photo and it just dawned on me that CC may not actually be visually taller than Liberty One, thus prompted the question.
BTW, this building is shaping up to be Awesome. I cant wait until it is topped out(understatement). The glass is probably, at least for me, the most pleasant surprise. i figured it would look good, but damn; it blows me away. It is the best glass in the country for all buildings under construction in my humble opinion.

the view from the cab of the new crane must be nice. It's a good 60+ feet higher than the other two and towers over the whole building. Its going to be interesting to see how they build the steel around the last crane prior to its removal. I would guess its going to be there for a while if it has to take the other two cranes apart.

Exactly.
So, from the distance that MJ's photo is taken (at a distance where a 30' difference is barely noticeable), that may be enough to bridge the 30' difference and create the illusion that Lib 1 is the same size or slightly taller than CC.
BTW, I believe that sometime in the early 90s the spire on 1 Liberty was increased to 960' feet with radio equipment. In fact, if you look at photos from when the building was first built, the spire was much stubbier and had no transmission devices.
Anyone have any archival material relating to this? Volguus? Sasso? Bryson? Swinefeld?
Assuming it is correct, then the actual height difference with Comcast will only be 15', even less noticeable particularly from the south.
giamomj
Apr 30, 2007, 9:26 PM
While it's true that Lib 1 has had many radio dishes, antennae and other gizmos added to it over the years - the overall height of the spire has not changed from the day they finished it. I remember oh so well taking the El from 52nd street (or was it 56?) at dusk the first night they lit the crown. Wow...what a spectacular site that was. Me thinks CC will blow everyone away in the same vein, too.
As for Comcast Tower - it is a stunner - and it's not even near completion. The glass does it. Hard to imagine it being higher than Lib 1's spire. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Seems like the crown has a lot more height to go....

you may be right, but I recall the spire being heightened. Many sites (but not SSP or Emporis) list 1 Liberty at 960' - including gophila.com:"Back in the City Hall area is a post-modern landmark by Murphy/Jahn, One Liberty Place (1987). At 960 feet, this skyscraper of glass, aluminum and granite is the tallest building in the city, and the one that broke the unstated rule that nothing in Philadelphia should rise higher than the statue of William Penn atop City Hall. With its many-gabled top sheathed in blue glass, One Liberty Place satisfied a quasi-nostalgic desire for iconic silhouettes (such as that of the Chrysler Building), yet at the same time boldly proclaimed a new era in building for Philadelphia."
http://www.gophila.com/pressroom/main/newsreleases/releases/010725architecture.htm
I would say there is a 70:30 chance One Liberty's spire tops out at 960'.
I'd love to see the original topping out photos again.

This is from a better expert than I, Sasso, back on 9/13/05 in Philly IV:
ok, the dude and i went to L&I this morning, and this is what we found. it seems somewhat questionable, but it is what it is, and this is as official as we can get with public records.
and now, what we've all been waiting for ... is two liberty taller to the roof? how tall IS one liberty's spire? did mellon bank center once have a second tower proposed?
http://phillyskyline.com/123abc/lni_oneliberty.gif
http://phillyskyline.com/123abc/lni_twoliberty.gif
so, if the above are correct (and it's a big if), two liberty's roof is 14' taller than one liberty's. two liberty's file did not have any figures for its pointy top. one liberty's file DID have an elevation of just the spire, from the antenna additions that WMMR put up three years ago. the elevation had a height figure of exactly 960' to the red bulb atop the spire (though shawn will tell you it said 960' 4", ha ha). i read it as saying 960' +/-, meaning "approximately" 960'. this would of course make OLP's spire 124'. so there we have it.
JMininger

Well, how about that! Good find. So, from MJs position, it is likely that lib 1 will appear as tall or taller than CC even when CC is finished. However, the mass of CC already makes lib 1 seem a little short.

THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR RESIDENTS OF THE PHILADELPHIA AREA
Please take note that if you were to stack a pile of books where the COMCAST CENTER is being built today, it would be required to be over TWENTY (20) feet taller than ONE LIBERTY PLACE for it to appear to be the same height as the aforementioned ONE LIBERTY PLACE in the event that you are looking out MJ's window facing towards Center City. I know, it surprised us here at out Public Service Announcement HQ as well. My boss dang near choked on his McGriddle(tm) when I told him.
This means that if One Liberty is 960 feet tall, you would need a 980’ pile, or 9800 books (.0005 Libraries of Congress) to make up for the apparent angular height difference. The City of Philadelphia DOES NOT recommend that you attempt to create such a pile of books at this time, although it would be nice if you would stop throwing candy wrappers in Swann Fountain. A smile wouldn’t hurt you either, would it?

Thanks for the compliment Ken. Nice photos there yourself.
Funny post with the trigonometry work! But the math to get 20 ft assumes that Liberty Place is directly between me and the Comcast Center, which is not the case. 20 ft is too high of a number, but I haven't calculated the right number myself (and probably never will). :)
Anyway, since the last one went over so well, here are a few more sunset shots. These are from Sunday night:

MJ - Another winner!
And good catch, you are right - my post was misleading. In fact, actually DID guestimate only the "x" component of the distance from your shot (about 10 degrees clockwise of straight across), but in order to simplify the post I just had the background lead straight from one building to another. I really should have added another triangle.
Frankly, I think I was just exited to actually have a pseudo-practical use for trig - never thought that would happen.
Thanks for the compliment Ken. Nice photos there yourself.

That shot kind of reminds me of the old postcards from the 30's-40's that were painted to depict an urban scene. They were usually filled with color and contrast.

Norman Greenbaum: That's actually a Sasso pic. Itsmotorsport quoted it, and Daqan reposted it with poor quoting protocols, leading to the confusion.
Now please return to playing your music. I am sure somewhere there is a group of astronauts walking in slow motion towards their launch vehicle in desperate need of theme music.

I hate to ask this becuase I'm sure it has been covered in the past, and in great detail...but...
Is Comcast putting their logo on this building, like the IBX building?
I've seen it in past renderings, but I just wanted to confirm that it was speculation.
I'm hoping no?
Thanks!
phillyskyline
May 3, 2007, 9:09 PM
I don't believe any of the renderings show a Comcast logo so I believe there will be none. Tower you always seem to pick spots that show off the skyline from views I've never seen before - great job!

If there is a logo, I am guessing it won't be on the exterior, but rather in between the glass on the crown and an interior wall. The glass on the crown looks like it will be open from the top of the last occupied floor all the way to the top of the building, and the interior cube/atrium area will be illuminated from within...so that would be a perfect spot to put a logo without it being too gaudy. But then again, the logo wouldn't show up during the day because of the reflection...so I am probably wrong. Oh well...I'm still posting this anyway!

it is an interest point, could the logo actually be inside rather than outside, if so it would be another innovative aspect to CC.

slight sidebar from the logo topic, they have placed something overtop of the "floor" that was on the top of the core, perhaps for the bathtub and elevator and ac stuff?

I believe "The Cheat" provided some renderings of a logo in the 1st post of this thread.
Again, probably just speculation....but just wanted to check.

Funny, Bryson.. I was thinking the same thing the past week, especially from the angles where you can't see the bend in the crane. It really looks like the NYT building with the big spire.
We'll have a 1000 footer at least for another month or so if ya count the crane, and pretend it's a spire - However dumb it WOULD look.
