The only thing I don't like about our skyline is how at certain angles some of the trophy buildings disappear behind one another. Every single one of them is between 16th and 18th streets. It's a shame that maybe one or two of them could have been where Commerce Square or the Blue Cross building now sit.
At least this building will stand out...but if they left it at this height....we'd have a hard time seeing it from behind the BAT.

There is a particular type of glass used for this building to get it up to LEED standards. I don't know if that makes the glass "wavy" but I really don't see how that's consequential.

Next stop: Mellon Bank.
If CC is at 740 feet right now (just over the 739 ft. BAT), it needs 60 feet (or 4 floors @ 15 ft. each) to exceed the 792 ft. Mellon Bank building. At 2 floors per week, it should only be 2 weeks.
I guess we won't have much time to celebrate CC being the 4th tallest building in the city. It should only be another 2 weeks (the very beginning of the new year) before CC eclipses 2 Lib and becomes the 2nd tallest building.
My guesstimates:
Currently: 740 ft., 4th tallest building, edging out BAT
2 weeks projected: 800 ft., 3rd tallest, edging out Mellon Bank
4 weeks projected (Jan 1): 860 ft., 2nd tallest edging out 2 Lib
7 weeks projected (Jan 22): 950 ft., city's tallest
8 weeks projected (Feb 1): 975 ft. topped out

Maybe it's because I'm from Bucks and up till college, this was my most familiar skyline angle, but it's still my favorite: from the northeast, looking out over Kensington and Port Ricmond and Fishtown, with all those church spires in the foreground against the skyline. It's a very noir angle on the right day. It's basically the same angle as the South Street Bridge post card shot, with the buildings spread out just right, but instead of a foreground of river and trees, it's much more urban.

I wonder if Stern's lighting feature for this building will include lighting in the shadowboxes of the four corners of the building and leading up to the crown.
He's done it before with his design for the Torre Almirante building in Rio:

Preach on Brother Litz. I agree with every word. When I crest the Diamond Hill and the skyline is laid out before me it still awes me. With the classic golden era suspension bridge on the left and that noir-esqe urban landscape on the right the view is for me the quintessential east coast metropolis.

I was re-reading the spec sheet for CC that is posted on Gio's site, and it says this about the lighting scheme:
"FEATURES: ... it will be the tallest LEED certified green building in the US upon completion, featuring such environmentally friendly items as tall windows for natural light, waterless urinals (saving over a million gallons of water a year), and an interally managed accent evening lighting scheme which can change colors."
That does in fact sound a lot like the LED lighting scheme that was installed on Stern's Torre Almirante building in Rio. The LED's in the shadowboxes can change colors, as shown below:
http://www.pbase.com/awkab/image/71046855.jpg
http://www.pbase.com/awkab/image/71052026.jpg
So if I were a betting man, I would put $20 on CC having the same lighting scheme, and being able to change from normal lighting to shades such as pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and green during an Eagles game.

ACKKKK. I agree...well, maybe a small CC logo......l
What's good for Times Square or the Ginza Disctrict doesn't translate well to a town like Philly......the present lighting schemata plus whatever CC has in store is appropriate....then the Parkway, the Museum, the Waterworks, fountains and City Hall, etc. it couldn't be better....I do like the PECO zipper though.....right where it is...
(I have to confess to a preference for the old lights of Times Square......neon plus incandescent bulb zippers, etc.....far better, more inventive and more interesting IMO than today's stuff)

2. Comcast Center
3. Bank of America
Then when these are done, the other projects will take center stage for photography and discussion.

-fish, we've been through this - there won't be an observation deck. The restaurant wont be on the rooftop. And this building isn't going up in the middle of Times Square so tell me: What is the significance of an LED screen a thousand feet above an city that boasts a total count of exactly zero of them?
-The skyline showed the national colors because of the Army-Navy Game this weekend.
-There is now glass on all four (or eight or twenty, depending on what you count) sides of the building.

How do you know?
They could always retrofit later on for an outdoor observation deck.
The elevation platform atop of World Trade Center #2 was added after construction - so anything is possible.
No, I never said rooftop restaurant - I said, "near the top".
No, I did not request this tower be moved to Times Square, but that's not a bad idea provided a video display be added to compliment the other ones.
Just because I have ideas is no reason to give up on them.
I have a passion for skyscrapers and I think big. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/mr-fish/Miscellaneous/BigSmile.gif

awkab, your photoshop handiwork is pretty accurate, but the lighting system won't be LEDs or anything neon looking. pretty much just as you did there.
fish, you're killing me.

The LED's in the shadowboxes can change colors, as shown below:
isnt it kind of an unspoken agreement that most new taller buildings in the city will be able to change colors to fit the lighting scheme (like green and red for xmas or pink for breast cancer)?

I think it's more of a trend then an unspoken agreement. Buildings are provided with easily changable lighting systems because thats what the consumers of those buildings want.
Technically any building of any age has a changeable lighting system. All they have done is make it easier. Instead of sending a custodial engineer to put colored caps on all the lights by hand they can simply make a few mouse clicks.
Here are two more photos from the other day. Unfortunately my zoom is nonexistant so you'll have to squint to make out the CC.

Somewhat of an homage to the pyramidal roof we almost got on the CC. Feel free to whistle the 2001 theme.

Ahhhh, the nice long distance shots. You can truly see the marvels of men by their buildings when you can see them at that great of a distance. It's just another way of showing how large and tall they are. F'in awesome.
I also like shots from everyone else, and volguus's standing at the bottom looking straight up shot. From all I've seen on this entire forum, this CC thread has the best pictures!!!! Anyone want to take a daytrip down to your neighborly Baltimore to get a few construction pics?

Great pics, I really love the design of the tower and it seems to be progressing really quickly. Quick question though, is there going to be another setback of the concrete core soon? It seems that there would be a need for one soon. Thanks.

i don't post on SSP very much anymore, though i browse fairly regularly...but i must say this is a fantastic thread with a lot of great photos and info - and seems excitement is growing with every additional foot...
and to give some perspective on CC's height, it will be 3 feet taller than this monster here in houston, which feels quite enormous in person and really dominates:

I hate those ugly residential buildings on JFK Blvd! To think there was a hotel the same size as those residential buildings where CC is going up. JFK Blvd. was one ugly street back in the 80's and earlier.

The Sterling isn't that bad. Regardless, those 2 buildings are completely out of place - especially when viewed from 76 between girard and 676.
We need more ugly buildings such as these filling up spaces on North and South Broad Street - as long as they provide us with affordable housing. No frills condo buildings marketed at entry level professionals, teachers, cops, etc. with a parking space as an optional expense, no fitness center, no viking appliances, no doorman, etc. Just a place for regular Joes who want to be near downtown.

If you are suggesting that because you find these buildings ugly.....that somehow makes them affordable.....well either you are very confused....or maybe I am. Anyway this remains my favorite view of CC

That traffic light shot didn't need 60 seconds exposure. The light goes from green, to yellow, to red pretty fast. The yellow probably lasts 3-4 seconds, and it's almost as bright as the other two lights, so this was probably about a 15 s exposure.
Sasso, I guess you picked up the 10-22 mm lens?
Thanks for the photo updates everyone. I keep picturing 975 uninterrupted feet of that awesome glass... wow.

I don't think there will ever be an affordable condo anywhere near center city. We working people cannot maintain a skyscraper-style condo. I am the President of a 24-unit townhouse development and in the last 2 years we had to completely replace bad roofs on 2 of the 4 buildings. Our funds are dangerously low right now after 15 years of saving. So it's assessment time!

awesome awesome pics. when i see pics of the comcast center, i feel like my grandma "oh you've grown so much!" now that it measures up to the city's tallest buildings, it's much easier to visualize its daily growth.
i know that those two buildings are not cheap, especially the sterling.
while it's not possible to build anything affordable in center city, there are many vacant lots along north and south broad street in which a project like this could work. living on broad street allows for quick access to center city via the subway and the width of the street allows for taller buildings and center city views, even from the street. a condo tower as far north as temple and as far south as oregon ave could be built for regular joes, as long as the builder doesn't invest too much money in nice architecture, amenities and free parking.
