i dunno, ingis, our counts have been spotty and we're counting from the ground up (or from webcams). i think they're right now on 49 horizontally, and 49 is the floor serving the bottom end of the southern keyhole. vertically, i think they're at 51. i counted 49 in person on wednesday morning. i step out onto my deck every morning to see if the cutout is noticeable yet. it's got to be next week.

got my eye on you, sonny ... maybe literally. from the light in those pictures, it looks like you were standing on spring garden bridge around the time i was standing on MLK drive bridge right below you. what time d'you take those? i was there about 3 or so.
i like the last shot ... i am not normally an advocate for mass tree clearing, but doing so really made the top part of the schuylkill river path much more attractive and, i think, safe, considering the vagrants who used to(?) hang on the bank at night. it'll be even nicer if they ever build the skate park and get that little portion lit up.
while i was out MLK, i got an update of the rendering officially used by liberty and stern:

nice work on that, awkab. they really overshot the width, but i think the height is pretty accurate. there's still 99' of steel going above the concrete core, so that photoshopping gives a good idea of how far we're going. awesome.
EDIT: nice work also, tower. killer.
i wonder when the photo for the official rendering was taken ... i had to climb through some shrubbery on the banks along MLK to get that shot. i wrote about this several months ago, but that particular vantage point is the PERFECT location for a wooden pier and observation area. it's close enough to the east bank of the schuylkill river path that it's walkable for neighbors and tourists using the path, it's right on the curve of the river, and it's at the foot of a former footbridge that connected MLK drive with the zoo across 76. i suppose there's no way to guarantee the footbridge would be used, but in my ideal mind, it would be a great way to get to the zoo and enjoy a postcard view of the skyline. right now, the only way to get from MLK to the zoo is to go way past girard ave and double back on sweetbriar. anyhoo.

Awesome renderings guys. I like the thinner version of the tower much better. Seems like the not only fattened it up in the rendering, but also moved it south a little to better show the design, rather than have it blocked by the Bell Atlantic Tower. It may have been unintentional.
they don't rivet any more. they use high-strength bolts.

This thinner version looks much better in the skyline, and (at least to me) appears taller. Even though it dominates the skyline because of its height, the reflective glass makes it blend into the sky and its surroundings at the same time.
I think this tower will accomplish what Stern originally had set out to achieve when he designed the old 718' tower: to design a skyscraper in Philly that would be timeless and not compete with the flashy skyscraper designs of the past in Philly.

If I remember correctly, if you set up a tripod, then it blocks the entire sidewalk...right?
giovanni sasso
Feb 5, 2007, 4:27 AM
it depends how big your tripod is. it's a pretty wide sidewalk, and there are places where it's easier to set up than others, like the north side at the exit ramp, where the view is unimpeded and there aren't any pedestrians since the north side is closed. (you can still cross at a green light and that corner is open and wide enough to set up a shot.)

Actually the original rendering had Mandeville in it when I found it......it may have been in one of the early advertisements I can't remember. I removed Mandeville from the picture because I don't believe it can happen in the next 10 years or so if ever. Same goes for River City. As for Comcast I tried to capture the sense of a shimmering mirrored finish that's kind of wavy because that is what I am seeing so far as I walk past it.

Feb 6, 2007, 6:25 PM
I thought your work on the reflection aspects of the cladding were very well done Bryson. The only critical point I could mention is that you de-emphasized the tapering elements of the design. The result looks a little more blocky then the final product. However, it's only a matter of a few degrees of angle. The rendering shows a fairly close approximation of what that view will look like when finished.
And boy, will Comcast look great! :slob:

Wow... all these renderings in so little time fellas.
The above few shots are especially remarkable due to their vantage points.
However, I think all the pictures are horrible, personally. Especially the ones since page 1.
Sorry. It's just how I feel.

Do you think it will be built higher or lower than 915'?
It has been approved by all groups for 915'. I'm 99% sure it will not go lower or higher then that.
...and that my friend I'm 100% fine with.

Cripes! Belmont, frankford, camden and south philly? Sasso sures gets around. Literally. North, south, east and west.
Ingis - Yes, the tower is 915', but remember from that view BVT is a good mile futher away then the other towers of similar height. If anything, I may have made it look a little too tall.
Comcast should be right on, River City is based off the heights they used in their own rendering, and I fear I may have short changed Mandeville a foot or fifty. But I think it is close enough.

As usual, you shots are awesome. However, I have a question. Where/how did you take the very last photo? It looks like a view from South Phila. looking down Delaware Ave. Looks like the view you would get from the Walt Whitman. How did you get that shot?

Since the file name is Whitmanskyline, I assume he rode shotgun across the bridge and put his telephoto to good use.
Litz - The uncropped version is much cooler. Southwest Philly on the leff to the USS United States on the right. Stupid 30mb file.

nice shots there, vit.
eigen, can't you shrink it a little and 'save for web'? it'd be pretty rad to see the whole thing.
i was previously unaware that there is a promenade and pier with a gazebo on it in gloucester city. it ain't pretty, and it ain't very well advertised, but it's there. it's at the foot of market street, between the ports, post-industrial piers and a gated in four story public housing building, but there it is with a view of the walt whitman bridge.
and yep, that last one was taken on the WWB. yeaaah, as a passenger, that's it! fret not, i was watching the road -- i had the camera set on multi-burst and just pointed it in the general direction of that view. that's the only one out of about ten that turned out ok.

Don't mind my asking, but what is the building U/C in the foreground of this picture? where is it located?

That's the Pearl Condominiums. It's between Arch and Race, 8th and 9th. That's as tall as it's gonna get.

I usually cut out the auto junkyards in the foreground.......but it's still a nice picture. Must have been early in the morning to get that light. Were you bitten by a COMIC SANS when you were a child? Sorry........I didn't know.

I like it based on the renderings. It's competent modern design, and the aprtments look like they'll have lots of light.

Pearl isn't great, but it does front the street and will provide density while not interferring with any skyline views. If something is going to be ugly, the least it can do is be someplace where it doesn't soil a view. *cough* edgewater *cough*
