^the first hyperboloid structures were the work of vladimir shukhov. other architects of the time experimented with the hyperboloid structure, but shukhov's are generally the most structurally pure.
i LOVE the hyperboloid structures. maybe because they actually make sense, and do not require all sorts of marketing to make them fashionable? they're structurally efficient, but difficult to construct.

most Chinese cities have axes, ever since the days of ancient Xian 2,200 years ago, the Eastern counterpart to Rome and later, the worlds biggest city of its time. Basically the grid plan there, bisected by vast central roads, some of them 700 feet wide, gave birth to similar city plans in new capitals of Beijing, Nara, Kyoto, Seoul etc. It was intended to compartmentalise and make logical the city, act as firebreaks and keep the population in check. Today we can see the modern day grid plans across the world. In China these main avenues once leading to the city gates ,and connecting the central palaces, have become the meridians and axes.

I think the point was to make it a very tall cultural center, of sorts. If you have to build a big TV tower, why not do it with some style, and throw in some revenue-generating functions as well? But not a full office tower, especially not with that design. the floors would be too small, especially in the middle, for efficient office spaces, and probably for even small residences, too. It's sort of Guangzhou's Modern Eiffel Tower (which is over 300m tall, with a total of about 3 floors).

I reckon the red and white's staying - at that height it must act as a visibility beacon to aircraft

Why isn`t Burj Dubai painted red and white?

because its not statutary law there?
or maybe red/ white denotes radio masts?

I doubt that is the final height of the antenna. Won't they be jacking it up like the burj dubai spire?
For example it looks like it should go higher according to this model

I don't think it'll get taller. Right? It might just be the impression because of the surrounding construction equipment, the scaffolding, etc, etc... I could be wrong/ I did see something wrong with that spire and like I said, something sleeker would've been better.

I so badly wanted to get some good pictures of this tower last weekwnd, but the weather was the worse.
Anyway, it looks great in the sunlight.

That first picture is wonderful! And I still don't see much work being done on the framework. Will they paint it? Just clean it? I hope that the final product looks better.

I like it. Too bad about the red and white stripes on the antenna. I'm sure it's a legal thing but it messes up the clean flow of an otherwise all white spirally thingy.

The picture up there is great.
I pretty much hate all TV towers, but I have to say, with this and the Tokyo Sky tree, I am beginning to like them. I have seen this in person when my train was passing through Guangzhou, I was very impressed.

do you mean the tv tower? There are buildings behind the lattice if that's what you mean. The tower still needs to be painted and cleaned.
