I have to assume that once the construction is done, there will be a final coat of paint & polish. Like most structures under construction, they are dirty looking. Similar to steel bridges, this one will apparently need relatively frequent maintenance, and a LOT of painting.
This is really a gem of a TV tower. Its a skyline icon, a gigantic sculpture.
I doubt the TV broadcasters are footing the bill, or if the observatory income will fund it. Regardless of who's paying for this "utilitarian art", I am happy to catch a glimpse of it. It really is a magnificent structure. If they just needed to broadcast, a guyed mast would have done the trick for less than 10% of the cost. But this is a real beauty, and whether or not it was a good use of available funds is always an endless debate.
I love this thing. Thanks for the photos.

I wonder how fast it will take for the white to get dirty, as well as how they will clean it..

My guess is that it's pretty hard for dirt to find itself half a kilometer from the ground. And if it does, rain would wash it back down because Guangzhou isn't an arid area.

The Burj Dubai got dusty because of the climate there, as it rains less than four inches a year in Dubai and there is plenty of sand and very dry dirt particles that are easy to suspend in air. A little bit of moisture prevents dirt from blowing. Maybe a bigger problem, in this case, is rust. I'm not sure to what extent pollution or smog might stain a surface.

I think it will look about as dirty as the Seattle Space Needle looks, and need to be cleaned about as often as the Space Needle needs to be cleaned.

Aleks
Dec 8, 2009, 11:48 PM
The Space Needle doesn't really get that dirty. Some dirt at the top but it's never really dusty.

The GTVT will deal with more pollution like you said. I was expecting that they painted it either pastel white or some sort of metallic gray :(

Yikes - looks in the video it changes color about every 2 seconds and does a complete cycle every 12 seconds or so.

I can picture a tower changing daily, or maybe even having some other cycle on holidays, but blinking through the rainbow 365 days a year seems kind of obnoxious to me. It's like having Christmas lights on your house from the Fourth of July till Easter.

World's tallest TV tower opens in Guangzhou

Stealing the title from the CN Tower in Toronto, the swirling Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower by Information Based Architecture (IBA) has just opened to the public at a staggering 610m in height.

During three days of celebratory events, the Mayor of Guangzhou declared the structure open and revealed its official title of the Canton Tower. Time is of the essence however, as the new structure is set to play a pivotal role during the 2010 Asian Games in November, and the restaurants and top deck are as yet unfinished.

Certain contrasts can be drawn between the newly opened Canton Tower and Anish Kapoor's much debated concept designs for The ArcelorMittal Orbit - a £19.1m, 115m high visitor centre planned for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2012. Both bare the bones of structural engineering mastery, curling in elongated ribbons to upper viewing platforms hundreds of metres above the ground affording panoramic views across vibrant cityscapes. However, in contrast to the animated scepticism received by Kapoor's original concept, the Canton Tower attracted over 30,000 visitors over the festive three day opening celebrations.

Numerous viewing platforms are scattered across the Tower, some taking the form of sheltered outdoor gardens, others protruded glazed viewing boxes complete with transparent flooring. The top deck - still under construction - has been designed as a sloping elliptical square, angled north-west towards the old city centre in an attempt to create a bond between the old and new elements of Guangzhou.

Two circular rotating restaurants can be found at levels +428 and +417.6, however both have retracted soup from the menu as the entire Tower can sway up to 1.5m in either direction during high winds. On the lean, curling design, who worked with fellow IBA architect Barbara Kuit on the project explains: "Where most skyscrapers bear ‘male' features; being introvert, strong, straight, rectangular, and based on repetition, we wanted to create a ‘female' tower, being complex, transparent, curvy, gracious and sexy. Our aim was to design a free-form tower with a rich and human-like identity that would represent Guangzhou as a dynamic and exciting city. The result is a tower, very slender and tall, that bears similarities with the figure of a female, the very reason that earned the nickname: ‘super-model'."

This tower turned out less than what I expected. A different color would look better and they had a GREAT opportunity to make an all-white interior (sort of Zaha-Hadid) but instead they painted a cheesy blue sky on the roof! WTF!

The antenna could've looked a thousand times better. It could've been a thin mast (like in the old renderings) or more aesthetically pleasing (CN Tower, Tokyo Sky Tree). And those pods on top? They look like they're straight out of a 1960's worlds fair!

6the tower's elliptical, so it looks slim from far, but gets wider as you approach it. AS for those wide angle shots, you also have to account for the lens stretching things on the sides.

This...

http://pic.qnpic.com:83/r.jsp?fn=//fanjoin/share/2010/10/9/24096956201010072157578801039741218_002.jpg

Those are different angles though. The top one is shot from the side, which I believe is fatter anyways. The second one seems like it's from the back (the structure is higher than the floors and the GZ IFC is behind), which is thinner.

you're right though, the tower is elliptical. really nice effect imo.

Guangzhou just started the Asian Games 2010, nearly as many athletes as the Olympics and an opening ceremony that's cost twice as much as the Beijing one...

blade runner??? / city from a science fiction movie with flying cars?. WOW! that park/strip in the middle is so surreal! esp, because this tower is so tall and the perspective is crazy!

i think a great concept for a tv/observation tower would be a wheat stock and head. the detail and elements of the wheat are a natural for a really tall tower. i think it would be a award winning design if someone where to pull this off. say 700 meters. lol
