There was another crazy storm that hit Vancouver yesterday with winds clocked at over 90km in some places and very heavy rains. The storm knocked out power to 190 000 people.
I came home and found a roofing shingle on my doorstep (not a good sign)! Apparantly there is supposed to be another two more storms before the end of the week!!!!!
And next week there are two more on the way! :D
Yay el Niño! :D

This weather is crazy warm. The grass is still almost its summer green and only very very lite brown spots in places. Unreal for this time of year. And its likely gonna be this warm for the rest of this week and into next. (7-9 degrees C)
Crazy I tell'ya...just plain crazy.

If you could read Russian you would understand that is it 'man with horns riding dolphin.' :) It was on engrish.com the other day, and I just had to use it. :)
Thunder Bay has no snow. Why, I don't know. But frankly, I am worried that we won't see any not just until Christmas but possibly not even into early next year.
It went up to 2 degrees today and it is 2degrees now. For this time of day at this time of year, it should be about -12 degrees and we should have about 7 inches of snow.

Ohhh, the fur was flying in Edmonton over the last couple of days!
Residents bombarding city councillors with angry phone calls at work and their private homes demanding they clear the side streets. The city finally caved and now the ginormous task is underway.
I am still baffled that Edmonton and Calgary DO NOT HAVE THEIR SIDE STREETS, PUBLIC SIDEWALKS AND BACK LANES PLOWED. That is one thing I miss about Winnipeg; even if the plows are late, everything gets cleared. Edmonton is a winter city, even more so than Calgary, and should have these services. But ultimately it's up to council to make that choice.
Thunder Bay plows it's side streets, public sidewalks and back lanes even if we get just an inch of snow.
But our plowing is privatised.
They do that to get paid by the city, and usually end up running the budget down a good amount before winter actually sets in. We have gone over budget several years in a row now when it comes to plowing.
But, when you can drive down a back alley that gets one car a month in the summer, two days after a blizzard, it's all good. :)
The budget draining could also be our insanely large amount of roads and sidewalks. We have more than 1500 named streets here.

There's something about a really bad storm hitting Vancouver now - wind warnings are supposed to be for winds as high as 100 km/h - this is close to a Category 1 hurricane force. But winds up to 157 km'h have been reported. That is equal to the lower end of a Category 2 hurricane. As many as 200,000 people have been without power and the transit/skytrain service is disrupted, as some Skytrain station have no power at all. This is what happens when you have an El Nino weather pattern going on.
I'm supposed to be leaving for Vancouver on the 20th. Reminds of the weather I encountered in England as a kid way back during the Christmas holidays in 1981 while visiting my late grandparents in a seaside town on the North Sea coast in northern England. :D
I don't even want to think what will happen if the planet ends up in a permanent El Nino (there is some evidence this may have happened about 3-5 million years ago) because we're putting way too much CO2 and methane into the atmosphere.
It was up to 2C yesterday in Edmonton and it's now overcast and -4C and dropping. The forecast is for a high of -11 by Sunday, but there may not be a bad cold snap like what happened earlier in late November, as temps will rebound back to around 0-2C by Tuesday.

Yet another massive storm in vancouver last night, I was actually woken up by all the noise. Literally 100s of trees have fallen around the city especially around port moody, the north shore , and the stanley park causeway. I was watching the news this morning and multiple houses were crushed by collapsed trees as well as 250 000 left with out power (luckily I'm not one of them). Skytrain servicehas also been disrupted. STORM WARNING FOR CITY
Storm warning for city
By CARY CASTAGNA, EDMONTON SUN
Hunker down, Edmonton. It's about to get nasty.
After a balmy start to 2007, a blast of Arctic air - with the makings of one of the worst winter storms in 18 years - is headed for the area and should strike Wednesday, says CTV Edmonton weather specialist Richard Ozero.
"It's a winter reality check," Ozero told the Sun yesterday.
Wednesday's Arctic blast is expected to bring falling temperatures, as much as 14 cm of snow and strong winds, which could result in blowing snow and wind-chill factors in the minus 40s, Ozero said.
WORST SINCE 1989?
By his estimate, it could be the worst storm since Jan. 30, 1989.
"In 1989, we had winds close to 30 kmh, temps falling to -27 (-42 with the wind chill) and 29 cm of snow," Ozero said.
"Weather can change, but it looks like it could be a nasty storm."
Shelley Williams, Bissell Centre executive director, said the weather will make life difficult, but staff and volunteers will just have to work harder to get to the city's homeless.
"I believe they've worked very diligently this year to come up with a winter plan,"she said.
Coun. Kim Krushell said the city's snow-clearing efforts following a hefty snowfall in mid-November were hampered early on by a lack of contractors, but that improved into December.
"If that trend continues, we should be able to weather the storm," she added.
The snow will taper off Thursday, but frigid temperatures will remain with a daytime high in the -20s and overnight low in the -30s, Ozero said.
The cold snap could last for up to two weeks.
The ominous weather forecast is in stark contrast to the past week, which saw a record-breaking high of 8.6 on Jan. 2, according to Ozero.
WACKY EVERYWHERE
Indeed, the weather has been wacky across the country this season.
Snow is rare in many regions, with ski hills and tourist operators complaining the weather has been melting away their bottom line.
Climatologists have predicted 2007 will be the warmest year on record.
In Ottawa, the Rideau Canal, billed as the world's longest skating rink, still isn't frozen.
In Toronto, temperatures were expected to continue hovering a few degrees above freezing for the next few days.
Vancouver was sitting at a seasonable 10 degrees yesterday, but has seen weeks of record-breaking wind and rain storms.

City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park
10:25 AM MST Tuesday 9 January 2007
Blizzard warning for
City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park continued
Blizzard conditions expected tonight and into Wednesday.
A disturbance crossing southern British Columbia will track eastward into Alberta today and intensify. Bands of snow ahead of the system will become an organized snow area tonight and is forecast to extend from the Lloydminster area west into the grand Prairie/southern Peace regions. Widespread snowfall amounts of near 10 centimetres can be expected with local heavier amounts especially over east central Alberta. Increasing winds this evening will combine with the falling snow to generate blizzard conditions in exposed areas across most of central Alberta. Conditions will slowly improve from the northwest on Wednesday as the snow tapers off and the winds gradually diminish.
In the wake of the disturbance on Thursday an Arctic ridge will build down over western Canada bringing clear skies and very cold temperatures. Brisk winds and temperatures near minus 30 will result in extreme wind chills over the High Level region.

Edmonton does have real blizzards, just not often.
The blizzards in 1949 and 1965 both were pretty bad. Of course, areas south of here like Red Deer would get so much snow that tunelling was required for the main streets of several towns.

The standard for a blizzard, according to Environment Canada, is that the winter storm must have winds of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more, have snow or blowing snow, visibility less than 1 km (about 5⁄8 mile), a wind chill of less than −25 °C (−13 °F), and that all of these conditions must last for 3 hours or more before the storm can be properly called a blizzard.
When all of these conditions persist after snow has stopped falling, meteorologists refer to the storm as a ground blizzard.

I wasn't even born yet then!
But I'm aware what happened to Edmonton in January-February of 1969. It didn't go above -18°C for about 26 days. My parents were in Grande Prairie at the time, and it was just as bad up there, maybe a little worse, since it's farther north above the 55th Parallel. Mind you, my parents had very recently immigrated to Canada at the time, and that was through Halifax only several months before in 1968. (Dad was from Sydney, Australia, and mom was from Northern England)
January 30, 1989, was when Edmonton had one of its worst snowstorms in recent history. Over 30 cm (or nearly a foot) of snow fell on the city, with really nasty windchills down to -70°C. I remember that ETS service was seriously disrupted, and that students were excused from school due to the weather conditions at the time. I was in Grade 11 at the time.

LOL! Windchill factor is a bunch of baloney, and they really should stop using it as it is such an exaggerative thing. It looks like the coldest part of the winter so far is coming up in the next two weeks, though. I'll be glad when winter is done.

You think so? I think it's somewhat useful...however, I'll admit I'd take -35c with no wind vs -20 with a wc of -35c. Wind is just different, however, it does speed up the freezing process on the skin - which is why they say "feels like". Try Portage and Main at -52 wc :-)
Anyway, -35c with windchill in Toronto is pretty rare...so I'll believe it when it happens. When forecasting weather, meteoroligists rarely seem to use probability (and past record keeping) to help forecast.
It was raining in Calgary yesterday morning - with a nice full rainbow to the north...quite interesting for January actually.

01-23-2007, 03:52 PM
Well, some of the windchill factors are based on a comparison with temperature in a vacuum... no wind, no humidity, etc.. None of us has ever experienced temperatures in a vacuum, so all our lives we are constantly exposed to the elements. I just find the windchill thing to be a big dramatic device used to exaggerate the temperatures. For example, I have been in -30c temps, and I found them MUCH colder than the "windchill factor" of -30c. (unless a person lives out on a field at the airport, city buildings do block much of the wind). And forever people are hearing on the radio in the morning that it will be a windchill factor of -20c that day and they will repeat for the rest of the day that the temperature is -20c, even though in reality it is -8c. People are drama-queens at heart! LOL! There was talk a few years ago that Environment Canada was going to stop doing the calculations because of the strong argument that it was exaggerative and misleading, but so far they have resisted the temptation to stop doing it.

Yes...true. But it's there as a warning of how fast skin can freeze. Wind will increase how fast moisture is evaporated from the skin, so, in an effort to explain to people that "hey, it's -8c, but with the wind blowing at 10km/h constantly, you better prepare like it was -20c", the WC factor is used. It's likely more useful on the Prairies and in Quebec where temps (without WC) can drop into the -20c range (or less). I agree, that when it's 5c outside and they say it feels like -2c (or whatever), it is a little ridiculous.
However, in a lot of situations, you are correct that it can be misleading because of so many other factors (i.e. not being in the middle of an airport field, wearing wind-protective clothing vs heavy insulated clothing, etc).
Also - I agree its also not good for the media (or the Canadian "always cold" image outside of Canada) when the actual and WC temps get mixed-up.

LOL! That's the truth. I deal a lot with touristos and the British ones always latch onto the "windchill" temp when they are here. -25c sounds so much more dramatic than boring old -8c! You can bet your boots they go home and tell their friends it was -25c, which frankly is not great for tourism. :haha:
maybe Canadians are a bit masochistic! ;)
It was -6 on the radio today, they didn't say windchill. I'm a big guy so I can stand up to about -10 in a t-shirt if I have to, but when I went outside, it sure as fuck didn't feel like -6. It may not have been the -18 the windchill said it was, but it was a lot colder than the -6 they kept saying.
Wind does have a factor, but windchill and humidex are over-rated. People feel different temperatures different ways. I like it really cold but my brother starts shivering when it's cooler than 15. He loves really hot weather but I can barely breathe when it's past 25.
The windchill, while not accurate, does give you an idea of how to dress appropriately. Today was a two-sweater/thick gloves day, but I only wore one sweater/thin gloves because I thought it was warmer.

^^^ LOL! I used to always laugh when I went back to Winnipeg to visit my family, as I would see guys out walking in t shirts in cold weather, or light open jackets in extremely cold weather! Some people have amazing tolerance for cold. I do not.

No, I had a sweater. :D
I only go outside in the cold in a t-shirt when I'm getting the mail or bringing out garbage or something.

^Fair enough...as raised in Winnipeg, I fetch the mail in a T-shirt as well.
Taller - I'm losing my tolerance for cold. When I first moved to Calgary, it felt so baumy that I would rarely wear a proper winter jacket, and would likely leave it open anyway. However, even if it approaches 0c, I'm bundled...and dreaming of beaches (actually, anything above 5c and sun is very pleasant).
When I went back to work in the Peg back in 03/04, I worked and "lived" at portage and main...there was a week of -40c (-50+ with WC), and I left work late one night only to find the underground passage was closed! I didn't have a jacket! That 20-second dash across Portage East was one of the coldest I've experienced!

Man oh man!
I just hope that people realize that Winnipeg isn't the ONLY cold city in Canada! What about Saskatoon, Regina or Edmonton?
I really am not trying complain (much anyway :D ), but it gets damn cold here in E-town, and people have the same mentallity when it comes to cold here as in Winnipeg. I would like to see people use a city other than Winnipeg as a benchmark for how cold it really is:) .

Well, I think it is because, of the major cities in Canada, it is the coldest! ;)
But it is not the only. All Canadian cities get cold in the winter. That is what we do
here in Canada. Get cold.
But Winnipeg is the coldest. They even have that song. You know, that song? On the radio? By those guys? From that city? That song!
Thunder Bay is cold too. Not as cold as people keep saying but it is cold!

"that song" is by Big Wreck..."Portage and Main 50 below" is Randy Bachman ;-)
Tallest - you are absolutely right...all of Canada gets cold..including the west coast (though, milder). We like picking on Winnipeg knowing that we aren't as cold - but truthfully.
Stat-wise, Winnipeg's average daytime high in Jan is -12.7...where as Edm is -8, Regina is -10.7, Saskatoon is -11.8, T-Bay is -8.6. Whitehorse is -13.3. But hey, Yellowknife is -22.7.
I found it funny when I worked in Vancouver and some folks there would refer to lotusland as "tropics of Canada" :-)
The 'that' was referring to the Bachman song, I wasn't in any way mentioning the song 'that song'. It makes more sense to me, I actually talk like that. Without the nouns. You know those words that mean things? Those ones.

Nah - it's time we owned the winter here in Winnipeg. Let's stop hiding behind our summers.
Now that "global warming" has reduced winter to a glorified slushy spring day for much of Canada - Winnipeg should be positioning itself for winter tourism and outdoor activities.
We own major city winter in Canada and pretty much the world over - we should start to see some benefit from it.

^ most global warming models (you can find them on Environment Canada) suggest that Winnipeg may be recieving well above 0c average highs in January by the end of this century.
When the "new" 30 year rolling averages are calculated and used by EC in 2010, you'll see that -12.7 jump by at least a degree.

Thunder Bay has every winter sport opportunity Winnipeg has an then some, and if we don't have it, we can whine to the government to give us money for it!
^ yes - but winters are like clockwork here. I seem to remember a certain city name Thunder Bay not having snow for a long period this winter...

I can remember the winter of 1998-1999 (or was it 1997-1998? it was one of the two) where Winnipeg didn't have snow up until mid-december and then all melted away by april first. Plus, from my understanding last year, there wasn't a permanent snowfall until the beginning of december.
I think the whole clockwork analogy is slowly unravelling........................
Pfft, we can make snow!

Well either way - we still have the most consistent winter weather for a larger centre in Canada.
The weather is consistent enough that we have an 80+ team outdoor ice sponge hockey league (spongee) here each and every season from December till March.

mmm...outdoor ice...I wish that was a little more consistent here. But I never got sponge hockey (with running shoes) - hockey on ice is for skates :-)

Yup. That is one way to look at it! I'm afraid it was just a little too consistent for me, however.....

Only crazy people play spongee with running shoes - 99.9% of the players use spongee/broomball shoes... (kinda like the winter tire for feet...)

Same diff...should be using skates :-)
I do miss playing hockey outside in the Peg...there was always tons of rinks to choose from in our area (NK/EK). Outdoor rinks are just not common here (or have terrible ice).

I guess I am in the minority, but I hated outdoor rinks as a kid. I seriously froze my feet/ears, and nose way too many times than is medically advised! In those days, no games were EVER cancelled because of cold weather. Snow yes, cold no. ;)
