This will be coldest and snowiest November I remember since the 90s.
Last Winter, was extra great. Christmas with shorts on at over 15+, stayed mainly above freezing till mid february, had a slight dip, but still no snow. March brought alot of snow (typical in Alberta)
We certainly, on average do not get the snow dumps like Altantic Canada does.
Sure, we get some really cold days, I wont deny this, but at least its sunny.
The summer here is great. Its never too hot, and rarely gets cold, and you can have weeks of nearly full sun.
Do not knock it till you try it.

There's a pretty distinct chinook arch over Calgary right now, but it seems to be missing us to the south. Or something. I'm not entirely sure how that works.
Lethbridge is supposed to get up to +5 today, but I don't put much stock in weather forecasts in this region.

It's a comfortable 8 degrees and sunny today here in Ottawa. A welcome change considering we have been under cloud cover (and frequent rain) for the last month! I don't think that there is any denying that global warming has made things a little more mild here over the last 20 years. Good luck over there in Alberta; let's hope we stay South of the jetstream and all that snowy cold crap misses Ottawa to the North.

Its a freezing 8c here in Vancouver, cloudy and rainy today and every other day before today for atleast the last month. Over the next couple days though the temperature is suposed to dip all the way to -4 on monday which realy realy sucks and the sun is suposed to come out which I havent seen in a month or so for no more than a couple minuits...im probably going to take that day of because thats just to cold to step outside, might get frost bite. "The rugged road to the small fishing town of Pelabuhan Ratu in Southwest Java is well-troden by Jakartans on weekend and holiday jaunts.
I challenge anyone to beat the pleasure of lying on your beach gazebo watching yet another beautiful Pelabuhan Ratu sunset sink behind the mountains. The light catches the surf as it throws up a mysterious mist around the bay. And out on the water, the twinkling light of the squid rafts' kerosene lamps hiss into action as the aroma of your own fish drifts over to tempt you from your reverie.
The only complaint is that the restaurant service can be pretty slow, but, hey, everything goes slow here, that's the way we like it!"

The answer is here (http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.html) as far as which city is the coldest/ warmest (if you're willing to accept a 30 year sample size sufficient).
A sampling. Edmonton can't hold a candle to WPG as far as winter goes if you buy the averages arguement.

HMMM......... Winnipeg has the coldest winters and the warmest summers out of all three cities. They win all around
But as I stated before, the winters in Winnipeg are getting warmer just like everywhere else, permanent snow cover is restricted to about 4-5 months of the year based on what has been told to me; and apparently even that is getting shorter. And the "coldness" of winter isn't anywhere near as intense as what I can remeber it being.

It's not that common. There's only "on average" 5 days a year in Calgary that the low dips below -30c...26 days below -20c. However, I agree, if you spend enough time in the prairie cities, you're definitely bound to see at least -40c sometime.
The last 10 years has been generally warmer, but the EC averages are a 30 year rolling average - which right now doesn't include past 2000.
The next change to the "averages" will be in 2010. All prairie provinces will see improvements of about 1-2 degrees for Jan highs...which is quite significant. But based on averages, there is a sizeable difference between MB and southern AB in winter...where Cardston AB is the only place to have an "average" high greater than 0c year-round.

It hasn't been that warm... a few blips up, but by in large we had a very cold and crappy fall from mid Aug on. Today was either 7c or 8c and the high today normally should be around 5.6C.
I was surprised about that little place in Alberta that has an average Jan high of just above zero! I'll bet that average comes from some pretty strong swings either way. Our Jan avg high is something like -1.2C, I think. All in all I have noticed since I move here that our temps are not as stable as Vancouver/Vic, but they do not fluctuate as wildly as the Prairies, either.

Just like you get used to +35 C and high humdity, and person gets aclimatized to -30 and a wind
Not everyone. I hated the cold weather and could never get accustomed to -30c and -40c. Let's be honest... when it gets cold like that, almost all unnecessary outdoor activity ceases.. people only run out to the car and when they get to their destination they run indoors. You have to plug your car in or it will not start. Cities become ghost towns. I'd rather have +35C than -35C, no matter how dry a cold it is. ;)

Let's be honest - when TO gets to +35, all outdoor activity ceases as well...people only run out to the car, and when they get to their destination they run indoors.
When I worked out there in 2002, I found the summer weather unbearable - especially the days with smog warnings (and the garbage strike didn't help much ;) ).
+35 with a humidity (or even dry for that matter - like AZ or Vegas) is neary as uncomfortable as -35c.
I do agree though, that even the -15c in Calgary right now feels downright too cold to want to do anything. But again, this is NOT the norm in Calgary - the normal is +2c for a high...and while it cools off in the fall quicker in Nov, the Feb high in Calgary is slightly warmer than TO (really, they're about the same through winter).

Yes, it would be strong winds down there...however, as you move across the border it would die down. Unfortunately, there hasn't been recording stations long enough to establish averages, but I would suspect those averages would be similar as far as Onefour - which would also rank as one of the warmest spots in summer after the south Okanagan.
Those wild fluctuations in winter are the responsibility of being a direct hit from winds produced from the arctic polar vortex - pushed directly south over NWT down to AB, Sask, and MB...they move east from there, and are guarded by the Rockies (saving much of BC) - which is why it's usually "milder" close to the south-eastern edges of the Rockies.
So, while it will be painful to endure the cold-snap for the next several days, it's also been nice enough in Jan to golf or fishing in the Calgary area.

Actually there an area in southwest Saskatchewan, which on average is the hottest spot in Canada (Many people think it's the Fraser Canyon). It also has the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada, +46C

It was beautiful last week, +15C. I was out doing yard work. True enough, a couple weeks from now it could easily be the same again.

It doesn't have to be nice to fish!?! What about ice fishing? That's all kinds of fun right there...little tent, bottle of JD and some hot coffee! Highly recommended to waste away a cold prairie winter day:)

I guess no has mentioned Fort McMurray for winter weather. Try spending a winter there!
We had -50C a few times. -30C is normal.

Damn, -20 is way too damn cold in any month. How do you guys do it. In Vancouver it has been raining for days on end , and not just 'drizzle' either but straight up downpours every other hour. For some reason, this year I don't seem to mind it.
The same way you deal with the rain...really. I spent the last two winters in Vancouver - and couldn't take it. The first month I was there, I didn't think I'd ever see dry roads. The rain/drizzle/lack of sun is a big downer - and far more constant than a cold snap in Calgary.
The winter flowers were nice though :)

I believe that is actually owned by Midale, Sask - more south/central-eastern. While it has the record, it's still a couple degrees shy (on average) of Osoyoos. Still is quite warm though, but its a little warmer in the south-west corner (south-eastern AB) as you mention.

Many rivers will freeze over - at least at parts - in the Prairies. The Bow isn't one of them, and allows for fly fishing anytime during the year...very nice thing to do when it's +10c and sunny in Dec/Jan.

You can see from the satellite imagery where the warm jetstream is way south of Vancouver...well into mid-California (Napa and Healdsburg are only about 7/8c right now) - which pushes north-east through Montana (where Billings is +5c). As well, you can see the strong winds coming down the eastern edge of the Rockies, and cutting east at about Edmonton.
Those winds will continue east - so enjoy it now Ont/Que, this is your warning!

Ok, IntotheWest, I'll provide some proof, and then we can determine who is being honest! ;) These pix were taken this summer in Toronto, on a day when the temperature was 35c-36c. I went out on my bike for a phototour:

Ok.... now look deeply into my eyes, and tell me that this is as bad as -35C!:haha: I have to go by twenty some years memory of -35c as it never gets that cold here in TO, thank God. The coldest in recorded history was once at -31.4C.
The coldest temp ever recorded in Vancouver was a mere -18c.

Taller, 2 things happen when the weather is better in Hogtown than any where else in the country (which frankly happens a lot except for 2 awful winter weeks and 2 awful summer weeks)...
... everyone in soggy Vancouver, or frozen Alberta, or wannabe lotus-land Halifax....
... simply stop posting in weather discussions.
BTW, I have 2 rose blossoms and my clematis has one flower and is trying for more... not great in Costa Rica but in Canada??
Friggin' amazing. Bring on December!! (assumes global warming and more horrific chilly hurricanes on the west coast).
