Whenever I drink Bubble/Boba Tea, I think of Taichung.
I remember one time I saw Pilot Guide/Lonely Planet about Shanghai. The host was brought to a Bubble tea house. It was almost a copy of this one in Taichung :
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/60/177509280_f181046d5d_o.jpg
I was thinking ...like..."man it's Taiwan/Taichung culture! not Shanghai/China"
Taichung's tea culture has conquered most Chinese or Asian world. However, most ppl don't know it's originated from Taichung.

Maybe that's the impression from the media. Those problems are everywhere in Taiwan not just Taichung.
Taichung has a lot of lands for building some single buildings for pubs, tea houses, and "night clubs". Maybe, those "night clubs" are so grand that make ppl think Taichung has those problems u mentioned above.
Taipei has a lot of night clubs too. Downtown Taipei just doesn't have enough lands for building night clubs as grand as those in Taichung. The tea houses and resturants posted above can kind of give you an idea why those night clubs are so grand.
This really makes Taichung special. That's why I like Taichung. Especially, those night clubs make that new district like Las Vegas of Taiwan. :)

I now consider Taichung to be the best place to live in Taiwan. I use to live in Taipei, and I loved it there, but I feel Taichung is now better. One thing is ofcourse the weather here. Taichung has the best weather. It is not to hot or to cold. And it doesnt rain that much and when typhoons come to Taiwan they always miss Taichung. Plus I do like how Taichung reminds me of back home in Dallas Texas. Taichung has so much space that it resembles a Western City. I still miss living in Taipei because is has great transpertation, but I will pass that for the weather.

If you have a car, public transport becomes quite a bit less relevant. How's the parking situation in Taichung?

Parking in Taichung is bad in most places. Well, it depends on where you are going and the time of day. In the West District it is bad, this is because most of the offices are located here. But if you go to a store or a restruant, they do have parking. As for parking on the street, I dislike the way the parking fees are set up. In Taichung you have to pay to park on the street from around 7 am to Midnite, 24/7. Unlike Taipei where it is, and I could be wrong on the exact hours, 8 am to 7 pm M - F. But I cant complain, parking is bad in any major city in the world. I just wish Taichung could do something with its scooter parking, like what Taipei did. Taipei made some nice parking places for scooters only. Then it makes it easier to walk on the sidewalk.

I am living in a small village near Goslar (80km south of Hanover) and yes, if have been in Taiwan in 1999. My company built a production plant near Taichung and we lived in Taichung in the Hotel national and later in the Formosa appartments(?) (in the same building as Grand formosa hotel)
There i took the Photo.

looks like alot of development has been going on in taichung but hasn't been covered here in this forum. the city looks like it's getting a pretty dense skyline. I found someone's website that posted alot of new pics of taichung with a lot of new (looking), nice offices and apartments and ongoing construction. there's alot of buildings i've never seen before.
and does anybody know the status of the taichung opera house? has it been definitely approved, budgeted and will it be built? if so, when? they better build that sucker or i'll be really pissed.

this building is really cool. taiwan needs more of this type of architecture and more all-glass cladded buildings instead of brown or grey, stucco-type/bathroom tile covered buildings.

According to the Taichung city website the opera house will be completed by 2010. Unfortunately, I have no idea if planning for the project has been finalized or when construction is set to begin.

new city development in taichung designed by the dean of the school of architecture at princeton university, stan allen. (note: in the architect magazine website listed below, they listed taichung as "TAICHUNG, CHINA". everybody please email the writer and editor and tell them that taichung is in taiwan and not in china and that taiwan is a separate country. email addresses are listed in the website. thanks!)

new city development in taichung designed by the dean of the school of architecture at princeton university, stan allen. (note: in the architect magazine website listed below, they listed taichung as "TAICHUNG, CHINA". everybody please email the writer and editor and tell them that taichung is in taiwan and not in china and that taiwan is a separate country. email addresses are listed in the website. thanks!)
Very interesting article. It will be nice when it is done. However, I think that Taichung's government should concentrate on is an MRT in the city. Traffic is bad and it is only getting worse. For the size of the city, the transportation infrastruction is the worst.

Construction begins on Metropolitan Opera House in Taichung
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
CNA
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Construction of the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House -- a building Taichung Mayor Jason Hu has described as "a feat of engineering" -- began Monday in downtown Taichung City.
Addressing a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction, Hu said the simple ceremony represents the emergence of a new landmark in Taichung and a new page in the city's history.
Hu said the opera house is an artistic piece of innovation designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, a realization of Taichung's vision of overall development and an architectural piece that has already been an eye-opener in international architectural circles.
He added that when it is built, the opera house will be considered on a par with the Sydney Opera House, one of the architectural masterpieces of the southern hemisphere.
Chen Tien-wen, deputy speaker of the Taichung city council, along with a dozen of Taichung city councilors, took part in the groundbreaking ceremony.
The opera house carries a price tag of NT$3.5 billion (US$108.36 million) and will be built on a site measuring 57,685 square meters.
It will seat 2,009 in the main auditorium, 800 in a "playhouse" and 200 in a "black box," according to Ito's design.
The "black box, " an experimental stage, will form an intimate environment suitable for a small theater. The wide space around the theater will provide the theater with exceptional flexibility. For even greater versatility, the space can be connected to a rooftop terrace. The project will also include an art workshop, art market, operations department and a parking lot.
Describing his ideas about the design of the opera house, Ito said that "architecture has to follow the diversity of society and has to reflect that a simple square or cube cannot contain that diversity."
The fluid continuity of the structure reflects the idea that the theatrical arts are spatial arts that combine the body, art, music and performance, Ito has said, while providing optimum settings for traditional Eastern and Western types of performances, the design moves beyond the constraints of a traditional opera house.
The design is an open structure that engages its surroundings in all directions and creates opportunities for myriad encounters between high art and popular art, artists and visitors, stage and auditorium, interior and exterior.
Ito, who is known as "architecture's impossible dreamer who takes every project in a new direction," calls the space the Sound Cave.
The Sound Cave is both a horizontally and vertically continuous network. Even before entering one of the three theaters, the Sound Cave is perceived as a fascinating and flexible acoustic space, which, in three dimensions, connecting an arts plaza, workshops, foyers and restaurants.
Ito was presented with the prestigious RIBA Gold Medal in February 2006.

So, is there anyone that would like to help me add all of the Skyscrapers in Taichung to the list so the we can represent the correct amount?

Well, I think it depends on what's their definition of a skyscraper.

100 sounds like alot, especially for taichung. you must have a low floor threshold, like 20 floors.

Taichung Tower probably will be between 300M to 500M from newest information. However, the original plan is 600M.

600M?
Did I miss something in the past few years?
When you talk about "Taichung Tower", is it 鄉林's TT or the new proposed TT in the old airport site?

For, airport site, Taichung government wish Taichung tower can be 600M.....
But, for some reason , the most possible height is between 300M to 500M.

Here are two pictures that I took from Hotel One the other day. This view is of the West District. As you can see Taichung has a lot more building then just 12. I will upload more pictures later.

We're planning to visit Taiwan in 2011 (it's no short-trip to Mallorca you know ;) ) and to check in at Hotel One in Taichung for some days, just for visiting our 1999-hometown  Both hotels we lived in are seen here, Grand Formosa and Hotel National. It looks like there's a new building between Hotel National and the SOGO?!? If anyone has more pictures of these areas, pls post here...
btw. is the pigpen still alive?

^ that just shows that the city didn't go through much planning...buildings are scattered all over the place. Oh, I want to build a 35-storey here....but then next lot, you can still build a 10-storey building.
Taipei is not any better....

If you have not been here in Taichung for a long time, things down here have changed a lot and by 2011, things will even change more.
Yes, the Pig Pen is still there. That area has a lot of new clubs and lounges.
