These photos were published by the SF Chronicle and are from a book by Gene Wright. Actually, I mispoke in the title. Most of them are from the 50's and 60's (sorry about that--can't change the thread title):

hurrgh, i wish i could've stayed like this. Reminds me of the African North Coast for some reason.

Actually, that part of the city is virtually the same now. I'm sure somebody has a more recent pic of this same vantage point.
