View Full Version : Calgary: Favourite of the big office proposals

Of the large proposals for office towers in Calgary, which is your favourite and why? These are only the truly big ones that are barely under construction (Centennial) and the proposed. You can make multiple choices, so pick say your top three.

1. EnCana - The Bow

As much as I like City Centre, it's clear to see who the true standout is out of all of these. Stubby or not, that Bow is sure gonna be a beaut.

The Bow is it man. All of the others are decent, but the Bow is a notch above the rest. FCC II has great potential, but I need to see more about it. Jamieson place is a nice project, I like the roof elements.

I've got to go with:

1) The Bow, as the main choice, This is easily the best of the bunch. The glass atrium on the south side is outstanding, the curve shape and crossbracing are above average features. The whole tie in to the York, and the public art space etc.. put this easily on top. The great thing is that it's highly likely it'll get built.

2) Jamieson place is my second choice. Nothing spectacular but a nice shape in general, nice rooftop....a rooftop that will really add to the skyline, especially if they light up the spires at night. I like the vertical lines up the front of the building as well

3) FCC II. This one could be great, time will tell, but as it is it looks to have great potential.

City Centre looks great too, but I haven't really seen enough of it to make a proper judgement.

what is FCC2 again? regardless i chose city centre...sleek and it looks like a tower ....the bow has been done before and stands in london as a turd (the gerkhin-same external skin, )...i hope imperial oil builds something your city is worthy of.

2. FCC II
3. Penny Lane
4. City Centre

Although - to be honest - I think they are all really good. The level of proposals we are seeing now in Calgary is amazing. I hope they all get built.

great to see all the major projects in Calgary organized like this.

Judging from the current info, the quality of the Bow is very exciting. I'd guess that not since the TD Centre has a Canadian city received such a "complete" architectural work (in the form of an office tower). Very excited for Calgary on this front.

I find the rest of these projects awkward. I like Jamieson Place actually but those two deco-inspired vertical bars are a tad iffy... not bad though.

City Centre is decent but again, slightly awkward. The tower on the left is nice - simple and classy - though the podium is like a storey or two tall. The right tower is decent but it reminds me of John Travolta doing the classic disco move... awkward.

Centennial Place... maybe if it was 1990.

Penny Lane could be striking in person but it could also look really cheap and tacky looking.

FCC2... a very clumsy building. Looks like R2D2.

So I would go: 1, 3, 2.

I voted:

1) Bow
2) FCC 2
3) Centennial

The Bow is in a different league than the rest of the buildings, but some of the others are not far behind. FCC 2 could turn out to be great, we just s=don't have enough info yet, but I voted for it anyway.
I like Centennial as a building that I think will turn out much better than expected.

City Centre looks poromising, buit there just isn't enough information about it.

So far, every single person has the Bow as their #1 choice....then everyone else. I think it is fair to say the Bow is in a different league altogether.

I think FCC2 would look so much hotter if the east side (left) that is gold was made a deep black, and that corner window element was clear blue all the way from the top to bottom, and the west (right) gold area was a sharp silver. The rest would stay that blud color

First of all, this thread is fucked for the simple reason that it portrays how Calgary's skyline might just move into better company on a global scale. A true rival for TO if all were built. I hope to god that at least Bow, CC, and FCC get built. That happens to be my order of appeal aswell.

I actually like Penny Lane contrary to most people here. I think it will be better than expected.

City Center, FCC-2, Penny-Lane if it was a single-60 story project, however it won't be so, I'll say the "Bow"! 1,2, tie for 3rd!

I'm kinf of surprised that Centennial is last on the list , even behind Penny Lane. I guess the othe rprojects are looking pretty good though. Tough competition.

^I like Centennial, but it's not a project that comes out and grabs you. Even Penny Lane is different, with the green colors and angles roof tops. Plus it's got 49 floors which draws some attention.

The Bow is still the king of the land as far as I'm concerned. I really wish we could see more of City Centre. It's very prominsing, but lacking in info.

The Bow hands down, followed by FCC 2. They're all decent projects in my opinion, but the Bow isn't just a building, it's a building block. It's something that has the ability to turn a whole area around. Everything within a 3 block radius of the Bow will probably be changed by it.

FCC 2 looks great. It's different from the rest of the buildings, current or proposed.

I'm going with Penny Lane as vote number three. I think it will have a dramtic take on the skyline. I don't mind the street level. From the renderings I've seen it doesn't look that bad.

The Bow first! Yes despite its flaws and its wasted potential of being a 1000 footer. (Curse the shadowing guidelines)
It still looks amazing and I can't get enough of the atrium view.

Second: FCCll, just lovely IMO. Design is sharp, height is still pleasant even though its not the original height it still reaches higher than the FCC1 and has a nice jagged and unlike addition to the Calgary skyline which I love!

Third: Penny Lane Towers, I think it is simple yet modern and at least meets the minimum requirements for good design. That glacier Lake Louise wall will look sharp from the West side of town. Height is very nice too topping over 200m. And the glacier garden, who can forget it is going to be a very nice place to chill out and eat lunch someday.

Calgary with the amount of people it has and the scale of the city has office construction which I bet has more than Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and MOntreal combined! Then again I might be enjoying a bliss of arrogance :D
Definetly North America's Dubai! Ok fine, Canada's Dubai!

Now no one get offended.

We recently had a trade show, and when i was setting up our booth i was looking at the frame structure and thought - man that looks like something familiar. I realized that the curved arc and triangular truss frame resembled almost exactly the Bow in Calgary. I don't know if anyone else has seen this resemblence before. I guess architects have to get their inspiration from somewhere, the features and structure were almost exact. When i put the curved end caps on the display the transformation was complete. I just built a scale model of the Bow.

Please don't start another Calgary - Winnipeg flamewar. That is not what i intended. I would love to have that building and i am envious you are getting it. It is just an observation about the design. ;)

And at least 2 of them (Jamieson and The Bow) will next year. Penny Lane is a good possibility for next year too.

Don't think there's much question that the Bow is head and shoulders above the rest. I'm dying to see the finished sky gardens and the restored York hotel/cultural complex. I love the way the building has been designed to take advantage of the position of the sun and the prevailing winds. Compared to this building, the rest are just your usual boring, tall boxes.

FCC2 was the second tower of First Canadian Center (Bank of Montreal tower). There was an original proposal of a 64 story twin of the current tower back in the 80's, but never got build because of the crash.

A new design was proposed, and I think even made it to the Land Use stage, but that is where it has sat for a while. Not much news and it probably is not going ahead now.

Edit: Never mind, I was too slow in typing.
