I'm working on a project for a historical preservation class where I'm going to give a presentation on how sprawl and other factors have affected the health of Detroit and historic architectural gems contained within. I have just begun researching the '67 Riots, Paradise Valley destruction, and a few other things, but I was wondering if anyone here has information on what is being done to preserve remaining landmarks and other significant structures in Detroit that are currently abandoned. Are there any tax incentives in place that encourage preservation? What is the city's policy on preservation? Etc.

Also, for some reason the search bar appears to be gone, so I'm having an incredibly hard time finding specific Detroit photos on these forums by using the Google bar at the bottom. Does anyone know of any threads showing areas of Detroit that have had extensive destruction along with historic structures that may be facing the wrecking ball?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help!Corktown was sliced three ways by the freeways. One part is where MGM is building. This is one of the only two buildings saved from that area. It was actually moved to what we know of as Corktown about two years ago I think.

Are you from the area, mustang? If not, I can get you pictures by request. Just let me know.

Something you may be interested in right now is the demolition of the Detroit Commerce Building. It is a neighbor to the Book Cadillac Hotel which is being renovated. Demolition has just begun and the physical destruction is under way. So, there's real life documentation you can capture right off the bat.

For Detroit's policy regarding historic preservation, I would begin with a contact to the DEGC (Detroit Economic Growth Corporation). A contact there would be Peter Zeiler. Very knowledgable, and he can tell you about what the city had in mind for the "dinosaur buildings"...the big ones that were of major concern before the Super Bowl.

Also, refer to Preservation Wayne. I'm not sure how indepth they go being I never really researched them, but it would be worth it to check.

Also, for pictorial reference, the Wayne State University online library has an impressive, extensive collection of historic photos, one in which I remember being of the Lodge Freeway construction standing right in front of a historic complex somewhere near the Henry Ford Hospital.

Let me know if I can help further!

Crash! Down she goes! Today at lunch (11.29.06)

The destruction of the Detroit Commerce Building. Farewell, oh pretty one.

Soon to be forever replaced by a hiddeous, monstrous, lifeless parking garage. Bright lights, blank facade, porous walls, depressing cityscape. Parking garages on EVERY corner. No car left behind. Surplus of parking...bring your boat!

Oh, the irony. :(

Are those window openings on the blank wall of the Lafayette Bldg? If so, wonder if they'll be replaced when the building is rehabbed for lofts?
