I would love to see this happen but I'm not exactly sure where the funds will come from. Nonetheless, it'd be great for UW to get a stadium like this which will probably be the best college stadium on the West Coast if not the country.

Turner: Husky Stadium holds key to UW future
Washington AD unveils his vision for renovating facility

By TIM BOOTH
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Washington athletic director Todd Turner, offering reporters his vision for the university's athletic facilities, emphasized one thing: The future begins and ends at Husky Stadium.

Turner noted Thursday that his presentation is not yet a plan. There are no dollar figures or timelines attached, and massive nearby transportation projects could present serious obstacles.

Still, his 30-minute presentation completed the first step in a process that started in March 2005 when a facility planning study began. Working with a committee that included former Gov. Dan Evans, UW coaches and sports architectural firm HOK Sport, Washington has developed a grand vision for its athletic future.

"We're not ignoring the other things, but our focus is going to be on deciding what to do with Husky Stadium because it does drive this train," Turner said.

His wish list is quite long. It includes a renovated Husky Stadium, new football operations center, a relocated track, renovated baseball and soccer stadiums and renovated locker rooms.

It was the same presentation Turner gave to the university's regents two weeks ago, when he received approval to move forward with a four- to six-month period of studying all options and developing a plan.

"Now the hard work begins," he said. "What are you going to do, how are you going to pay for it and when is it going to happen?"

While Turner's vision includes improved facilities and amenities for many of Washington's 22 other intercollegiate sports, football and Husky Stadium are the main focus. About 70 percent of Washington's athletic revenue comes from that, he noted.

"This is incredibly important to the business of the athletic department," Turner said.

A renovated Husky Stadium would need to be more modern and accessible for many of Washington's longtime season-ticket holders now entering their 60s, 70s and 80s. The stadium currently has only two elevators.

It also could create new revenue streams through premium seating -- perhaps even suites -- and would need to stay close to its current capacity of 72,500, to maximize its earning potential.

A new addition could come at the west end of the stadium. Two renderings showed a glass and brick facade on the outside of the stadium that could be a new football support center.

Inside there would be covered seating, perhaps with a two-tiered structure, similar to what is currently on the north and south sides of the stadium.

An improved Husky Stadium appears to be No. 1 on the project list. Turner hopes that could lead to additional revenue to help pay for things like updates to the baseball and soccer venues.

However, two transportation projects -- a Sound Transit light rail station to be constructed outside Husky Stadium and plans for a new Highway 520 bridge across Lake Washington -- complicate the picture.

Construction on the Sound Transit station is expected to start in late 2008 or early 2009 and last 5 1/2 years. Some preliminary plans for a new interchange off Highway 520 would run right through the south parking lot of Husky Stadium.

HOK architects told Turner they have never dealt with such a complicated transportation plan.

Turner would like to see construction on Washington's athletic facilities taking place at the same time as the Sound Transit project.

Yeah, I love how they close off that end to have a full horseshoe kind of like at Ohio State, also love the removal of that horrible track!

Indeed, beautiful stadium. But is there a need for that many seats? Isnt avg attendance like 10k below capacity?

well todd turner is saying that its still a seating capacity of 72,500k....so i dunno....i just cant see them adding all those seats and its still the same amount. But we'll see. I have read that whenever UW remodels a stadium or arena or anything...they team does VERY well within the following years....because it attracts players to how large and gorgeous the facility is. Im sure they will do this...its just a matter of when. Anyone notice the husky tron is gone and the east endzone bleachers are still there tho...but built into the ground since the field was dropped....LOoks sooo cool....i cant even imagine...im so excited.

what is the attendance at football games whenever i see the games on fsn it looks 2/3. i don't understand the justification for such a large expansion

They want to change the seats on the lower deck from bleachers to individual seats which will drop capacity significantly. They also want suites, like skyboxes, to bring in more revenue which I think will eat some seat space also but I'm not sure. I heard something mentioned about suites on the field level sooo....

I heard the aisles would be wider, less bleachers, and the addition of luxury suites, all of which constrict seating space, leaving capacity around 73,000. Sorry, no 90,000 seat stadium for the NW.

Regardless of capacity though, it will definitely be one of the most attractive in college (if not among the largest). Especially with its setting...

No, Turner said the infrastructure in place cant handle anymore than they have right now, he said the stadium would be exactly the size it is now, 72,500. I read it in a live chat with him.

EDIT: nevermind, this has already been addressed. All it is is tearing down the lower bowl(keeping the upper deck intact) and moving it closer to the field while reducing the horseshoes capacity.

yerah i read that...and if they do put in individual seats...then that would lower it by a bit. haha thanks for clarification tho :)

I have an idea. Have a winning program first before you spend a huge amount of money on a new stadium.

^ Washington is one of the winningest programs in football. Plus the Huskies have led the Pac-10 in football attendance most years since the '87 stadium expansion, despite having the 6th largest stadium prior to this year.

Next year the football program will change and those OT's we had this year wont happen. Locker, JR, and all the new recruits will help build the program back to its winning ways. It's the return of the huskies....the dominating football program. Finally....and a stadium suitable for one of the top programs in the nation.

If they continue to lose Stanford they will never fill those seats! Quit holding on to the past...they pretty much suck!
