I like the dual tower Le 1300 René-Lévesque Ouest, it actually reminds me of a more rounded (for lack of a better term) Capitol Mall u/c in Sacremento.

1300 René-Lévesque Ouest looks like it will be and nice addition to Montreal, it is reminiscent of the 900 N. Michigan in Chicago. I'd hope the exterior is not going to be gold and "Trump casinoesque" - that might not be the best choice.

1500 Sherbrooke Ouest has a great classic look too...

exactly, after the insolvency proceedings are complete, a new investor was supposed to be resuming the project

so my question still remains, is this :previous: a new rendering from the investor who is taking over the project? or is this just an old preliminary rendering that somebody dug up from a long time ago? because I don't remember ever seeing it before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver
Vancouver's "View Protection Guidelines" were approved in 1989 and amended in 1990, establishing view corridors in the downtown with height limits to protect views of the North Shore Mountains. These guidelines have succeeded in preserving mountain views, although some find Vancouver's skyline flat and lacking in visual interest. Many agree that there is a need for some taller buildings to reflect Vancouver's contemporary image, but others are concerned about proposals for much higher buildings. Many believe that the natural setting, and in particular, views of the North Shore Mountains, may be hindered as tall buildings grow in number. In response to these concerns, Council commissioned a "Skyline Study" in 1997.[109]

The Skyline Study concluded that Vancouver's skyline would benefit from the addition of a handful of buildings exceeding current height limits, to add visual interest to Vancouver's skyline. This led to the General Policy on Higher Buildings. The study noted that the opportunities for such buildings were restricted due to a limited number of large development sites in the downtown. There were at least five sites identified where buildings exceeding the 137 metres (450 ft) height limit are possible, and at least two sites in the northwest corner of the central business district where heights up to 122 metres (400 ft) (exceeding the 91 metre/300 foot limit) might be considered.[110] Eight years later, five of the seven identified sites for higher buildings have been developed or are in the development application process. The tallest of these new buildings is the Living Shangri-La hotel/residential tower, which when completed in 2009 will stand 197 meters (646 ft)[107] tall (61 storeys).[111]

Port of Montreal gets $2.5B for expansion

Over $2.5 billion will be invested into improving the Port of Montreal, port authorities announced Sunday.

It will be the first major expansion in two decades.

Montreal port president Patrice Pelletier said funds will come from a combination of financial reserves, loans, private investment and the federal government.

Michael Fortier, minister of international trade, highlighted the importance of the port for Montreal's economy.

"It's such an important player in our economy and it needs room to grow," said Fortier during a news conference Sunday.

He couldn't confirm a government investment of $600 million needed by the Port for its expansion, but said port authorities and the government are discussing the project.

"I think these plans have been well received by the government and well received by the community," Fortier said.

Pelletier noted the expansion project is expected to add 22,000 new jobs and increase economic spinoffs from $1.5 billion to $3.5 billion.

"We're also creating a fair amount of revenue for the government," he said.

An initial $500 million in funding is expected to be approved by the port's board of directors before 2009.

The first phase of the expansion will focus on refurbishing existing terminals and increasing efficiency.

The final two phases involve the construction of new terminals in east-end Montreal.

The four-part project has already begun and will be complete by 2020.

Port reports record profits
Pelletier said the port had record profits in the first six months of this year and was the most profitable port in Canada or the eastern United States.

"We're spending more money this year, we're going faster," said Pelletier. "It's just the beginning."

High fuel prices have not affected trade at port, he said, noting shipping goods by boat remains the cheapest transport method.

The expansion announcement was made during the Port of Montreal's first open house that allowed visitors into areas usually off-limits to the public.

"Today there's one objective," said Pelletier. "For people to understand what the port is all about."

Yep the 400 Sherb is pretty much topped off now. Now what? The 110m marriott on University and cathcart? The 3 to 4 towers of varying heights on Rene-Levesque? The 701 University (31 floors) The 900 Maisonneuve (28 floors)?

I'm looking forward for the square Viger!

Sorry if this has been brought up somewhere else in the forum, but I understand that the limits on the heights of buuildings in Montréal were based on the height of Mont Royal, the hill and park behind the downtown core. It is intended that no excessively tall buildings would overwhelm the views of/from the hill. Can anyone confirm/deny?

The 4th pic from the bottom of the last batch of pics got my att'n. The Garden Inn really changes the view looking down Sherbrooke.

My sister went to McGill back in the mid-70's, so I know this part of town very well. Looks like you were standing in front of the old music building (my sister's bldg) when you took this picture.* I like it. Hilton Hotels found a good spot.

*actually, you were a few blocks west of the music building, which sits at the head of Avenue Union. I didn't see what was in the foreground.

Hi. I'm new and from montreal and i was wondering.

Why no big skyscraper in montreal?

I mean, well. take any USA city with more than 1million people and you'll see that this city have at least 2 skyscraper over 250meter.

So why did montreal, with 1,6 million doesn't have nothing higher than 200?

ahh... I moved three weeks ago... I was living right beside the LUX Gouverneurs residence... Now I live near the Lac-Mirabel project... I can tell you that it's gonna be huge! Until now there is only the parking lots and the streets, and it already looks big...

I'm wondering now about the new UdeM campus in Outremont, is there anything new?

MSO concert hall has price tag of $267M

Project was pegged at $105 million in 2006

By ARTHUR KAPTAINIS, The GazetteMarch 26, 2009

The Quebec Culture Ministry has announced that a team including Montreal construction giant SNC-Lavalin Inc. and Diamond and Schmitt Architects of Toronto will build the MSO concert hall at a cost of $267 million - almost 21/2 times the $105-million sticker attached to the project when it was launched in 2006 by Premier Jean Charest.

SNC-Lavalin spokesperson Gillian MacCormack refused to comment on this discrepancy, and all other details, on the grounds that arrangements have not been finalized.

An engineer connected to the project said that the higher figure included changes to Place des Arts parking and other infrastructure work, not just the cost of the aboveground facility.

Organized as a public-private partnership, the hall at the vacant northeast corner of Place des Arts will be finished in the summer of 2011, according to a government communiqué.

Jack Diamond, the architect behind the acclaimed Four Seasons Centre in Toronto, said yesterday that Montrealers could expect a contemporary interpretation of a classic room. "The classic shoebox design, like the Musikverein in Vienna - this is a modern version."

Drawings cannot be released, he added, before contracts are signed.

Despite the price hike, Finance Minster Monique Jérôme-Forget described the agreement as practical for the province: "We will know exactly how much it will cost to build, use and to maintain this hall before construction begins, an undeniable advantage in a budgetary period of constraint."

Diamond said that the PPP system, which calls for a private consortium to build the hall and lease it to the government for 40 years, is an effective guarantor of quality. "Rather than cut the costs to the bone and hand it over, the builder has to manage it. This is a very different affair. They want no operational difficulties over that period."

Other companies involved in the consortium - operating under the umbrella name of Groupe immobilier Ovation - are Aedifica, a Montreal architectural firm; Aecon, an infrastructure contractor; Solotech, a lighting supplier; and Gala Systems, specializing in theatrical machinery. Ovation was one of three teams chosen as finalists and asked for detailed plans.

Artec, a noted New York acoustical company, was hired by the province as its consultant in 2006. Diamond said that he nevertheless plans to work with Robert Essert, the former Artec executive who collaborated with him on the Four Seasons Centre.

This facility, home of the Canadian Opera Company, is noted not only for its fine acoustics and impeccable sightlines but for having come in on budget. Another high-profile Diamond performing-arts project is Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, D.C., home of the Shakespeare Company.

Diamond stressed that the building would be a dedicated concert hall, not a multi-purpose facility like Salle Wilfrid Pelletier, the central structure in Place des Arts in which the MSO has performed, for better or worse, since 1963.

"It can be used for jazz and other types of music," Diamond said, "but the main game is the symphony, to create a symphony hall that will be among the best in the world."

The news will presumably give Kent Nagano a reason to renew his contract as MSO music director, which expires in 2011 - the year of the projected opening.

Good news, having the OSM in SWP is like having the Habs play at a curling rink.

Knowing Diamond and Schmitt Architects, this building is not going to be 'loud' in it's architecture, but concert halls must be function-first and the firm has proven they are capable of these difficult buildings. It's a safe, conservative choice, but a smart one.

Underground city : 31,5 km (Longest in the world)
Montreal's is the longest (including many dark sterile corridors),
but Toronto's is the biggest (and much better connected).
PATH is the largest underground shopping complex with 27 km (16 miles) of shopping arcades. It has 371,600 sq. metres (4 million sq. ft) of retail space. In fact, the retail space connected to PATH rivals the West Edmonton Mall in size.
