wow talk about empty! i think if it was built along the strip than the back of the hotels they woulda been more successful like those mini monorails connecting hotels. or if they were smart to extend it to teh airport and downtown

didnt mgm just propose extending the monorail to the airport? i agree that this will significantly increase ridership

This system as designed is not conducive to getting a great number of people to use it. The very nature of Las Vegas and the casino's that this transportation system links will be it down fall. First of all, mass transit system need to be convenient for people to use it, however this system funnels you into the casino's and their gambling floors and not exits to public areas. You always have to walk through the casino to get to the train platforms.

Secondly, as was already mentioned the system doesn’t link to the airport and most likely won't for the foreseeable future. Not unless Las Vegas wants to put 8000 cab and limo drivers out of work.

Third the system doesn't travel through populated areas were people who would use mass transit on a daily basis, i.e. those who work in the hotels themselves, and therefore it isn't convenient or practical.

Fourth, a one way ride now costs $5..:koko:

And lastly, current fares for 2006 are going to be in the area of 5 million riders annually. When the muni bonds were issued for this project ridership was projected to be 20 million + fares annually by 2007.

Not bloody likely!

The old MGM Grand to Ballys monorail

The original monorail and it was FREE to ride.

It had the same trains as in Disney's parks.

Mandalay Bay – Luxor – Excalibur Tram

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/673/lasvegasmaps03bshf9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The Mandalay Bay-Luxor-Excalibur Tram runs 24 hours a day, every 3-4 minutes.
The tram between Excalibur and Mandalay Bay is non-stop southbound.
It stops at both Luxor and Excalibur northbound from Mandalay Bay.

Excalibur main station, the monorail will take you directly to Mandalay Bay, about a 3-minutes trip.
If you start from Mandalay Bay, you will stop at the Luxor and then the Excalibur, about a 7-minutes trip.

All waiting areas are indoor except the Luxor's, but some walking is required to make the loop (there are stairs as well as an elevator to access the tram stop).
Fortunately, everything is well air-conditioned. Luxor's is the only monorail stop with music for waiting passengers.

This is the old monorail that is not there anymore.
I don't understand your comment and negative point.

Is it just me or do all the Casino's each have their own trains? Each train is painted differently for advertising purposes from what I see above, but it looks like in that very first post that there are several differing kinds of trains being used. Are these lines all linked? Or do you have to transfer between each line? I've only ridden the original line, which was about 8 years ago..... I've only caught glimpses of the new tram from cabs and when walking down the strip... kind of ironic!

WOW!!

Great thread so far, Don!!!

In the fourth pic under the map, what is that screen up over the little boy standing up, a video?

Also, why do some stations have the glass guard wall to protect riders waiting for a train against falling off the platforms while others don't?

Just wondering.

I believe that on the Mandalay Bay tram there is a glass door on each one, however I am not sure if on the other monorail in Las Vegas there is one.

I don't think that it is necessary on such a network as there is never a great mass of people that use it. Unless the ones that use it are extremely drunk, but i do not think that that is the case.

Yes that boy is watching commercials of Vegas shows on the video monitor to entertain people while riding on the monorail.

And yes all monorail and tram stations have glass walls at the waiting areas.
The ends of some stations are open for ventilation purposes.

Thank you.

I know also, that the tram at McCarrin Int'l Airport also has glass protection walls as well. But that one works like an elevator. Just push the button, and the thing will come.

When I go back to Las Vegas, I'll ride on some of those monorails just to see what it's like!! I've always loved Las Vegas, especially The Strip!! To walk along that street on sunny afternoons is a reall treat! So nice and lively.

"This is the old monorail that is not there any more", is sufficient enough. The 2nd sentense could have been left out.

I'm not trying to be negative either, nor was I ever. You seem to perceive things the wrong way. You're supposed to be impartial and unbiased. I only made the statement.

And why can't I daydream about the next time being in Sin City again? There's no law against that.

The Mirage to Treasure Island Tram

http://img303.imageshack.us/img303/4760/lasvegasmaps04sfo5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The Mirage-Treasure Island tram runs between 9 a.m. and midnight.
The tram arrives every 15 minutes at its slowest.
The ride lasts about 4 minutes, add another 3-4 minutes on either end for the disembarking procedure.

The Mirage stop of this monorail is outside but well shaded. At Treasure Island, passengers wait indoors.
No smoking, food or uncovered beverages are allowed. The ride, which passes under not-very-tropical vegetation, is slow but smooth.
Seating is bus-style, with long benches and a little standing room.
