I love Oakland, very nice set up pictures of a beautiful city.

I'm glad you capture some pictures of one of my many favorite spots around the city. That Barnes & Noble is one of largest and coolest one I've been to. I think one of the reasons I like this one is because of the diverse clientale you see patronizing it. This neighborhood actually would be one of my top choices to live if I were to live in the bay area.

Maybe it's a good thing it was a little smoogy- can't really see SF too good. That's just fine.

Despite the GREAT pics, Oakland has to be seen at street level to fully appreciate it.

Oh please, won't you please do The City next? :D

Thanks everybody.

Yea, Oakland has great street life. Much more than I expected. Although, not much to do after business hours and few if any decent hotels.

Didn't have time for lifestyle pics.

I assume "the city" is San Francisco?

Looks like some cool dense neighborhoods around those parts. Oakland has such a bad reputation, but it looks freaking good from the air.

Oakland's density is pretty ideal- plus a massive ammount of culture down there on the ground. Here's a couple pics from the area...

Some parts of oakland remind me of some areas in LA. DT Oakland could use some taller buildings though. It already has a beautiful waterfront centre with great potential to have a very nice skyline. Are there any taller buildings under construction, proposed or approved? Is there a height restriction? All the buildings seem to be around the same height. What's the status on 1930 Broadway?

1930 Broadway is the big one; heights have been floated for that up to 827', although I'll believe it when I see it. There's a proposed lakeside condo tower that could be 420'--16' taller than the current tallest--that's just a bit more likely, although those are, I believe, the fourth and fifth new tallest proposals in Oakland just since the millennium, and obviously the first three weren't built.

The short answer is that in this as in so many other ways San Francisco sucks a lot of the life out of Oakland. There's simply never been the demand for very tall towers.

Isn't DT Oakland right up under an airport...?

If so, I'm certain that explains the lack of height...
