What! No red Robbins!! There are at least four of them in Edmonton. Their hot sauce they use for their wings is in a league of its own.

I wouldn't count on In-N-Out not expanding north of the border... they're opening one as close as Utah this year.
As far as Carls Jr. coming here... it's supposed to have restaurants opened by the end of 2007. I'm assuming it'll be western Canada because they haven't even expanded into eastern U.S. yet. (California based)
I went to a Fuddruckers in Houston this September after a Texans game... Wow!!! was it good... I can't beleive the only one to survive in Canada is in Saskatoon!!! and what ever happened to Red Robbins... there's none left here in Calgary?

I find here in Toronto that it is wise to pick and choose one's Popeyes very carefully. The one at Yonge/Dundas is positively trashy, and the meat tastes seriously suspect. They fry the chicken in HUGE batches, thus you will get an old piece of chicken that has been sitting around if you don't go at dinner time. The new Popeye's on Yonge near Bloor is infinitely better, as is the one at College/Spadina.

Are Canadians ready for Carl's Jr.?
Bad boy of burger business heads here
'Provocative' ads try to lure `hoofoos'
DANA FLAVELLE
BUSINESS REPORTER DISCOVER VANCOUVER
The bad boy of the American burger industry is about to break into Canada.
Carl's Jr., run by a former rock guitarist and known as much for provocative television ads as massive beef burgers, is taking a run across the northern border.
The California parent company, CKE Restaurants Inc., could open as many as 500 restaurants in Canada "over time," starting with a "handful" as early as next year in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, said Ned Lyerly, vice-president international.
"We're looking for franchise partners right now, either exclusive-territory developers or a master franchiser for all of Canada," Lyerly said in a telephone interview yesterday.
The company, which first mused over Canadian expansion plans last May, took the next step yesterday by hiring Canadian franchise restaurant consulting firm Parker & Associates of Vancouver to help develop a strategy for this market.
The move could definitely spice up Canada's fast-food industry if Carl's Jr. brings in its provocative advertising campaigns.
The latest featured former party girl turned actress Paris Hilton clad in a skimpy black bathing suit and high heels. The ad was set in a car wash and shot by a rock video producer. The camera followed a writhing Hilton as she engaged a high-powered hose, a lot of soap lather, an ultra-luxurious Bentley and a Carl's Jr. burger the size of Hilton's face.
The ads are aimed at a group of consumers Carl's president and chief executive officer Andrew Puzder refers to as "hoofoos." That's industry jargon for "heavy fast food users," a target market dominated by men between the ages of 18 and 34.
The Hilton ads aren't the first to give the regional 1,020-restaurant chain the kind of publicity it couldn't afford to buy as the fourth-ranked player in the multibillion-dollar United States burger market (including sales of the parent's other chain, Hardee's).
To promote products, Carl's Jr. has in the past turned to basketball bad boy Dennis Rodman and Playboy-empire founder Hugh Hefner.
Even the chain's health-promotion ads, which urge consumers to "Eat right, exercise more," feature an attractive young woman in tight jeans riding a mechanical bull while eating a huge burger.
"When you're not the biggest spender, you have to find a way to break through the clutter," Lyerly said in defence of what he called the company's "provocative" ad campaigns.
But it's not just the ads that raise eyebrows. In an era of rising consumer concern about obesity rates, Carl's trademark menu item, "The Six Dollar Burger," weighs in with twice the calories and fat of the fast-food industry's leader, the popular McDonald's Big Mac.
Carl's Jr. says it's aware of the health-food trend among consumers, but they're not the chain's target market.
"We have pre-packaged salads. We have a line of skinless charbroiled chicken breasts. But that's not our primary focus. We remain focused on `craveable,' great tasting burgers," Lyerly said.
And, in that, Carl's Jr. shares a business philosophy remarkably similar to that of Canada's own Harvey's burger chain, which could also prove to be Carl's Jr.'s biggest competitor.
"We've heard that before. Harvey's will be one of our competitors. We're going after the same segment of the market," Lyerly said yesterday.
Interestingly, Carl's Jr.'s parent company is prevented from bringing its other burger chain, Hardee's, into Canada because of a trademark dispute won by Harvey's over the similarity of the names.
The Carl's Jr. burger doesn't actually cost $6 (U.S.), Lyerly added. (It's $3.95, which was worth about $4.66 at yesterday's exchange rate.) The name was intended to evoke the image of the kind of high-quality burger that costs on average $6 in a sit-down casual-dining restaurant.
Puzder has described it as the kind of burger he lived on while playing guitar in a rock band and putting himself through law school before becoming personal attorney to Carl's Jr. founder Carl Karcher.
The company hasn't priced the burger for Canada, nor picked the different name, Lyerly said.

My biggest complaint about Harvey's is the size of the burgers... compared to BK and Wendy's they seem quite small for pretty much the same price. And they don't have many locations left here either... I can only think of 2 or 3 standalone locations, and the newest Home Depot I don't believe even has one in it.
I look forward to seeing the opening of CJ's first location in Calgary... and I intend at trying it out at least once even if they decide to go in the most distant point of the city from where I am.

The absynthe sold in England and Canada comes from Eastern Europe. It is
the same stuff drunk over there, and has the chemical in it, albeit much reduced levels from the days of Tolouse Lautrec. It was a bit of a fad a few

Fuck TH. If there was one Canadian institution that I would love to see banished from earth it would be those useless douche bags in brown. I loathe the 80's menu, the absolutely deplorable uniforms, the flavourless shit they call food, I could go on all day. I especially hate the lingo: "double double"
FUCK them and their double doubles. I hope TH goes down in a scandalous image tarnishing jism in the boston creme donut debacle and is forced to close down all locations...in Calgary at least.

Face it, all donut shops are the same. Doesn't matter which one it is, and Canada is the Donut Capital of the World, from sea to shining sea in every city. They are cheap, and a basic staple of poor people.

Wendy's doesn't own Tim Hortons anymore. Wendy's sold it all off to the stock market, it's public now. Well I think Wendy's has a small percentage of Tim Hortons.
Tim Horton's is popular because of one thing, loyalty.
That's the first Tim Hortons in Canada, you can see the street sign, Tim Hortons Way.

Wendy's has sold off just under 18% of its shares of Tim Hortons and still owns the remainder.
Edit: Nevermind, I guess Wendy's just distributed its remaining shares of Tim's to the Wendy's shareholders on Sept. 29. http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/irol/19/195616/spin-off-faq.pdf

My hate is spurred by many things, but I was pushed over the edge in Sept. when the Tims in Mac Hall at the U of C opened. Now, all the small independant coffee retailers on the other side of the food court struggle, and have it rubbed in their face as the line winds past them. I've seen as many as 90-100 waiting in line. Fucking idiots. I realized at that moment that the U of C was not a place of higher learning.

Oh yea Tim Hortons is known to do that.
I remember in Hamilton we used to have a dozen or so of different coffe and donut chains like Mr. Mugs and Robin's Donuts, etc.
Tim Hortons would drop a place right next to a coffee chain and then a few months later that chain dies.

A few years ago, I would have passionately defended TH. I loved the old stores, with the counter that you could saddle up to, and the friendly, matronly-like women behind the counter.
Today, I friggen HATE Tim's. For the lineups. Whether drive-through or in-store. And the lineups. And the rudeness. And the lingo (God help you if you try to ask for something different, like '2 cream, no sugar'...they look at you like you had three eyeballs or something). And the retarded, fat-ooglie employees, wearing what quite possibly are the world's ugliest uniforms. And their asinine, annoying commercials (that loser in the boat sipping on his ice-cap, or those 'tards waiting for the Groundhog to emerge). And the filthy washrooms, lacking TP. And their phoney support of local events. And the shitty food (their bread is so hard and stale, it could kill someone if tossed at ten paces). And the roll-up-the-rim-to-lose-and-get-coffee-stains-on-your-hands-and-shirt contest. And the selection of timbits from location to location (always the crummy cinnamon ones...shove those where the sun don't shine; gimme the jam-filled ones). And they destroyed the Apple Fritter (basically, they shrank it and removed all the apple bits). And the lineups. All with the ambiance of the dank office space that exists in the service department of auto retailers.
Take all of the above, multiply it by 10,000,000,000,000 (in terms of outright badness) if you happen to visit a Tim's in one of those horrid travel plazas along the 401 (usually paired with Wendy's and/or Mr. Sub, and/or Dirty Bird).
Tim's has regressed to the lowest common denominator. It is the Walmart of restaurant chains. In fact, it is perhaps worse.

Yes Wendy's used to own Tim Hortons.
The first Wendy's restaurant in Canada is in Hamilton, they recently celebrated their 20th birthday in Canada, I think they gave away free frosty at the first store, I know that because I happened to be there at the time and got a free frosty with my spicy chicken lol.
But anyways Ron Joyce and Dave Thomas was good friends and so they both decided to merge but eventually Wendy's started eating up 100% control over Tim Hortons which led to Ron Joyce filing a lawsuit but later the lawsuit was dropped, think Wendy's paid Ron more money to shut him up.
Read Ron's new book it's a good book, Always Fresh. It talks about how to start a company all business students should read it.

Actually, Robin's Donuts has the best ice capps. Tim Hortons takes crushed ice, and adds a coffee flavouring. Robins takes real coffee, cools it, adds ice cream and crushed ice and charges 60% of the price. :)
Did I mention Robin's is a local company?
"I remember in Hamilton we used to have a dozen or so of different coffe and donut chains like Mr. Mugs and Robin's Donuts, etc.
Tim Hortons would drop a place right next to a coffee chain and then a few months later that chain dies."
Robin's is doing good in the North, considering THs reach is only 90,000 people in their market area while Robin's covers over 216,000 in NWO. They have closed a few locations, but they have improved their delis (The sandwiches are more filling than bread, they have better bread, their donuts are deep fried which means lots of flavour, though fatty.) and offer more choices and lower prices than Tims. They are working on a corporate make over and if things go well here and in the NEO area we could see a re-launch of Robin's and the renewal for the phrase 'A pack of Robin Eggs, please!' :P (They're much better than timbits. They have that natural donut crunch.)
They have shorter line ups, better uniforms (A kind of forest green colour) and more attractive employees. (If not more attractive, more stereotypically mid-90s Canadian coffee-house brand; ie, too much perfume, smoking habit and the willingness to chat and get to know customers. They actually come and sit down with regulars when it's not too busy in the store, so you know the people, unlike Tim's, which has new employees at every location every two months.) They've also got real fritters, danishes, persians, and muffins. Huge muffins. Muffins you can sink your teeth into.
I sound like a commercial.
"It is the Walmart of restaurant chains. In fact, it is perhaps worse."
Well said!
Like walmart - EVERY TIMS IS IDENTICAL!! Right down to the architecture! Since 2003, every single Tim Hortons built in this city has had the same design, same layout, same plants, same decor, same size parking lot, same menu items, my god it is monotonous! No two Robin's are alike, no two robins even have the same colour scheme half the time! Yet somehow, Tims nudged them out of almost every neighbourhood in this city (Except Current River, where they are noticable absent and everyone goes to Robins.)
I don't like Tim Hortons. :( I want my 32 locations of Robin's Donuts back. :( I miss walking along the airport lobby and seeing three of them within a hundred feet of each other. :( Or going to the hospital and being able to enjoy Robin's in the lobby, the cafeteria, the emergency room; Where ever good times are had. :(

^^ I thought Robins was a Winnipeg company! I used to not like their donuts very much. They were heavy and too many cake donuts. Tims has more variety, I suppose. Chicken salad sandwiches, etc.. but I don't go to donut places. There are too many real restaurants to choose from.
Robins was started in Thunder Bay in 1975, and flourished here. It was bought by Afton (Burlington) in 2000 but Afton went under. Coffee Time (Toronto) bought it recently and is working on fixing it up. Their flagship location is on Fort William Road in Thunder Bay, their headquarters is in Fort Frances.

Fun Fact! Robin's Donuts operates the only drive through establishment in Atikokan, Ontario! :D

You are soooooooooo right. What kills me is that the SHEEP are standing in line for BREWED COFFEE. Watch- almost nobody orders donuts or other food, just the damn coffee. Plain-jane, brewed coffee, the same shit you can make better at home with a 50 cent Mr Coffee from the Salvation Army. You can go to The Coffee Company (this is the indie place Arriviste mentions) a few steps away, get a selection of several kinds of brewed coffee (you don't HAVE to get espressos or lattes there, they like all coffee places serve regular old North American brewed too), NOT wait in line, but nobody makes that simple choice.
Tim Hortons is good for staying awake on the 401, and that's it.
