Founded as Temperanceville in the early 1800's The West End is one of the city's smallest and oldest neighborhoods.

Wouldn't even know it's part of Pittsburgh. Looks like it could be its own little western PA town. Thanks for the treat hero, definately a new part of the city to me.

West End is easily the most village like section of Pittsburgh. It feels like a small Appalachian town.

Despite being smack dab in the center of the city... and being VERY close to downtown... West End is remarkably isolated. It really does feel like a small village as opposed to being in the middle of a major city.

Very interesting photos of a forgotten neighborhood. It's business district is starting to perk up lately.

Great tour Hero. That photo of the balcony with the old chandelier is intriguing.

I always came to know the West End as "the back way" growing up. Coming into the city from the south you could avoid the Fort Pitt Tunnel traffic tie ups by getting off at Greentree and heading down to the West End circle.

Great thread! I doubt this neighborhood will be unkown for much longer. Try Vanilla pastry studio there - sweet jeebus it's good.

I remember getting lost, trying to return my cable modem somewhere out there and driving through the Deer Hunter set. It certainly freaked me out how it seemed that I had instantly left the city.

nice pics. one of Pittsburgh's strangest.

great photos. the similarities between pittsburgh and hamilton [canada] never cease to amaze me: steel, architecture, topography. the pittsburgh skyline is much more impressive, though.

you're right on the architecture and steel parallels, but i disagree on topography. aside from the Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton is not that hilly, which enabled the city to implement a "regular" street grid. the hills in Pittsburgh are crazy, especially in the south side (Arlington, South Side Slopes, West End..)
