I can't wait to see this square rebuilt. Bit by bit Warsaw regains its prewar glory. I only hope that work on the Bruhl Palace begins in earnest soon. I also heard that the Krasinski townhouses in the vicinity are to be reconstructed - given the housing boom in Warsaw, it wouldn't be hard to sell them.

So, they're re-building the palace as it looked before the war? Sweeeeeeeeet.
won't be the original, but in some ways it'll be better (modern interior stuff (elevators, modern plumbing, good wiring...)).

Is construction on Saski still slated for May 07? And has tender for Bruhl been approved? When and how is that getting rebuilt? Thanks

This thing has been stalled for so many years... I don't know how I feel about it, it's nice to see older heritage being rebuilt due to the injustices of the past but the square itself needs a lot of work - namely the ugly Victoria-Sofitel which won't come down since it's been recently renovated without actually improving in appearance!

One more interesting picture of Palac Saski to remind what a special building it was.
Looking forward to the start of the reconstruction, not in the form seen in this picture of course.

Wasn't Pilsudski a dictator?

Wasn't Pilsudski a dictator?

Obviously if a guy from Frankfurt asks the question it can not be nothing else (in his mind) than a provocation. But I would answer in this way- Pilsudski was one of the greatest democrats and defenders of democracy in the history of mankind, specially If you consider that he was between Stalin and Hitler. The other reason that the whole Europe should be greatful to him is that he saved the Continent from the Soviet deluge in 1920, by defeating the Red Army at the outskirts of Warsaw and preventing Soviet support to the German communist uprising. Final goal of Bolshevics in 1920 was world wide revolution.

No reconstruction of Pilsudski Square is complete without this beautiful church:

You really don't know the history of this square. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was demolished by the Poles after the Polish-Soviet War, which was fought right after the first World War. The Cathedral was seen as a show of Russian dominance in Poland and, at time of construction, the tallest building in Warsaw (hmm, doesn't this sound familiar ;)). The square was renamed Piłsudski Square after military hero Jozef Piłsudski who led Polish troops at the Battle of Warsaw, which led to the defeat of the Soviets and Polish independence.

good answer:)

Which doesn't change the fact that he overthrew government in 1926.

Calling Pilsudski one of the greatest democrats ever is laughable. He may have saved western Europe from Communism in 1920 but he definitely wasn't a thorough democrat.
