Hole in roof remains
Cowboys taking distinctive design to new home
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Dallas Cowboys are taking their distinctive hole-in-the-roof design with them to their $1 billion new stadium.
Only this time, the playground will feature a sliding lid to keep the elements out. That's a must considering there's going to be a 60-yard-long, 50-foot-high scoreboard hanging over the football field.
With a glowing, glass facade, sliding doors on both ends and 80,000 seats -- 100,000, if necessary -- the Cowboys sure are aiming for the kind of showplace you'd expect from a club that bills itself as "America's Team."
"I'm convinced it's a building that will be a classic when it comes to looking at its design," team owner Jerry Jones boasted following a Tuesday night unveiling that was more like an Oscars-esque event.
Complete with a red-carpet entrance that actually was the team's shade of blue, the party featured 10 members of the team's Ring of Honor and, of course, a performance by the Cowboys cheerleaders.
Bob Costas was the master of ceremonies and his hyperbolic-filled introduction included calling the stadium "the most extraordinary athletic facility every conceived ... a 21st century, supersonic setting." A video leading to computer-generated shots of the interior referenced many architectural greats, such as the Pyramids in Egypt and the Colosseum.
The unnamed facility is scheduled to open in 2009. The club already has begun lobbying to host the 2011 Super Bowl, and probably won't have a problem luring more major events if it lives up to its billing as the largest pro sports venue in the country.
The building is certainly impressive, with the glass exterior its most eye-catching feature. Jones said the glass is made to glow blue and silver during the day, then the colors will reverse at night.
"It's basically a changing color scheme, but all within the traditional colors of the Cowboys," he said.
The retractable glass doors on the ends will provide an open-air feeling on days when weather permits. Jones said he expects most games will feature the roof closed but the ends open.
Outside each end are visible two steel arches that run all the way through the playing field, peaking around the hole in the roof 320 feet above the playing field. However, from the inside, they are somewhat obscured by everything else going on.
Arlington voters agreed in 2004 to pay for $325 million of this stadium, with the Cowboys paying the rest of a projected $650 million pricetag. The skyrocketing tab is likely worth every penny to Jones, a former oil wildcatter-turned-billionaire who loves making a splash as much as he loves winning championships.
"No doubt about it, I want our fans to have the pride in a building that is recognized in a quality way," Jones said.
The Cowboys raised the bar on facilities -- and ushered in the era of grand privilege for the high-dollar fan -- when Texas Stadium opened in 1971. It featured a then-whopping 176 luxury suites and was paid for through personal bonds, a concept that has since morphed into "personal seat licenses," a cover charge fans must pay to be allowed to buy season tickets.
Texas Stadium's most distinct feature is the strange top, jokingly said to be "so God can watch his team play," but really a result of financial and structural problems.
The new place retains the iconic partial roof as a nod to the past. Everything else will be futuristic.
Start with the humongous TV screen that stretches between the 20-yard lines. With four sides, it will be visible to fans on both sides and in both end zones. More giant monitors will be featured outside the building.
Then there's the next step in luxury suites: Field-level boxes, including an area that also will serve as the team's entry point to the field, letting fans personally wish players good luck before kickoff.
The Cowboys kept the average fan in mind, too, minimizing the distance between fans and the field. Team officials claim the upper deck will be closer to the action than any other NFL stadium.
Most of the end-zone area will be standing-room only, but seats could be added. That's how the capacity could jump by 20,000.
With so much to cram in, the new stadium will certainly live up to the saying that everything is bigger in Texas. At 2.3 million square feet, it's more than 21/2 times the size of Texas Stadium.
Considering the Cowboys are guaranteed only 10 home games a year (eight regular season, two preseason), the team will be seeking other uses. College football's Cotton Bowl and the annual Texas-Oklahoma game may be lured from Dallas and the stadium could host national and international events in all sorts of other sports.

Exactly what i was thinking..
I'm always amazed at how easy it (appears at least) to get new stadiums built in Texas... I moved to San Antonio right after the Alamodome was built and it wasn't long after that, that the Spurs were talking about a new arena, because the Alamodome wasn't designed for basketball...
The rest is history.

Lincoln Financial Field isn't big, it only holds 68,000 people.
Maybe they should of added more seats instead of having that
open end zone on the on side.

He's talking about the HD Scoreboard. The Linc has the biggest scoreboard to date.
The biggest scoreboard in the NFL is at Dolphin Stadium, installed this past summer. The biggest in the US is at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium and nicknamed Godzillatron. The biggest in the world is at a race track in Tokyo. The two in the Cowboys new stadium will dwarf all three of those.
The Cowboys like to move farther away from Dallas. Best stadium the NFL will have for a few years I bet, until another team one ups the Cowboys. Texas Stadium is a shithole, though. I went there two years ago on Thanksgiving against the Bears, and the bathrooms had puddles of water, it was kind of muggy and the concessions were horrible. I don't know what it was, but little droplets of something were dropping down from the ceiling. Almost hit my hot dog.

Great stadium. Can't stand the Cowboys. I lived in Dallas for 8 years, hated them when I arrived and hated them more by the time I left. At least pre-Jerry Jones, I respected the organization.
I agree that it could be closer to downtown Dallas. Going to Arlington is a pain in the arse for most of the people who actually live in Dallas and areas north and east (see Plano, Frisco, Carrollton, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, etc.). Irving wasn't a great location but it was more central. Gotta admit that it will pull in more people from Ft. Worth (624K people) and Arlington itself is not a small city with 360K people.

Umm, the Big D?! Too bad it's being built in a suburb. Poor Dallas has problems getting their professional teams to stay in their city...wait a minute...their COUNTY! Wonder where the mavs/stars will move when the AA Center is outdated. I'm sure it will be Frisco. Or maybe the sprawl will have reached the Oklahoma border by then! God i hate that style, thats just the Fort Worth in you coming out. American Airlines Center and Ballpark in Arlington gave in to the "Old west" style, Jerry Jones will Never let the cowboys be seen in an "Old West" style stadium.
On the other side, Jerry Jones siad this stadium will be the largest ever made on planet earth, even bigger then that new crap bowl there building in New York (seriously New York...did you let a high school student design it?)

hmm, do i hear some hung over hatred do to the fact that our city beat your city out for the super bowl?
1. The Stadium would be in Dallas but Dallas Mayor at the time hates the idea of stadiums being built in downtown areas and doesn't like making the public pat for 1/3 the cost. Arlington was willing to put up the price at the time, it in a prime entertainment area, 1 block from The Ball Park in Arlington, 1/2 mile from six flags over texas, and they are developing the parking lots arund the ball park and new stadium into shops, entertainment and condos towers.
2. Jerry Jones is extravagant with his money. all stadiums have got to do new things, maybe not Luke, but all others do something new.
3. Why am i an ass hole for showing pride about the new stadium for my favorite team?
4. Lukas is cool, not into the old barn look (thats gonna take allot of bricks) so chill out.

the south arch was toped off today. By the end of the week it will be completed and have all the trust attached that connect the arch to the roof beam holding the arch in place. After that, the 4 shoring towers supporting the arch will be removed and the arch will drop 5 feet into the abutments where they will sit till the stadium is eventually replaced and demolished 40 to 60 years from now.

Cowboys Stadium
When the Dallas Cowboys leave Texas Stadium after the 2008 season they will be leaving many memories there, but the signature hole in the roof will go with them to their new stadium. For more than 30 years, the Cowboys have been playing at Texas Stadium, one of the most recognizable stadiums in football. However, just like every other team in the NFL, the Cowboys are constructing a new state of the art stadium in Arlington. Since the late 1990s team officials have been traveling the country, visiting the newest stadiums in order to develop the greatest stadium in the league. Designed by HKS Architects, Inc. the new home of the Cowboys will become one of the most recognizable stadiums in all of sports and open in August 2009. The stadium will feature distinct arches that span the length of the stadium, a retractable roof, that when open will create a hole like at Texas Stadium, and open endzone plazas. The open endzone plazas, the world's tallest at 120ft. high by 180ft. wide, will be made of glass and open in 18 minutes. Plaza's will be outside with three party decks.
As fans enter the stadium they will receive panorama views of the field as it will be 50ft. below street level. The stadium will have a main seating capacity of 80,000 but will be expandable to seat nearly 100,000 fans for large events such as the Super Bowl. On five levels will be 200 suites that will include the Hall of Fame level that will be just 20 rows from the playing field. There will be 15,000 club seats surrounding the field offering additional features that will not be found elsewhere in the stadium. Prior to the start of the game, the team will walk through the Field Level Sideline Club towards the field, giving fans a chance to see their favorite players. Fans with seats anywhere in the stadium will be able to see the massive video boards that will be suspended 110ft. above the center of the field. This four board videoboard will be 180ft. long by 50ft. high. Moving from Texas Stadium to the new stadium will be the Cowboys Ring of Honor. A Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame and Pro Shop will allow fans to learn the history of their favorite team and buy merchandise.
In order to pay for the stadium, in November 2004, Arlington voters approved a tax increase to help Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones build the $1 billion stadium in the North Texas city. Voters approved a measure that would raise the city sales tax by a half-cent, hotel occupancy tax by 2 percent, and car rental tax by 5 percent. Work at the stadium site, near the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, began in May 2006 as workers began to excavate the site. On February 6, 2011, the new Cowboys Stadium will host the biggest game in any sport, Super Bowl XLV.

The prices associated with this thing are staggering. Not just the price tag which will probably go over $1 billion when all is said and done, but the cost just to watch a game... in the lap of luxury. Personal seat licenses are being sold now for as much as $150,000... PER SEAT. That doesn't include the $3,400 cost for season tickets. The cheapest PSLs are $16,000. In other words, if you want to sit anywhere between the endzones on the bottom 3 levels of the 5 level stadium, you are going to have to fork over at least $16,000 just to reserve your seat.

Perhaps more amazing still is that despite ticket prices that are so far beyond any other team in the NFL, or in the world for that matter, ticket sales are strong. About half of the seats that cost between $16,000 and $150,000 each (before actual game tickets and parking) have been sold and more that 2/3 of the roughly 400 suites that will cost between $100,000 and $500,000 a year have been sold. In fact, sales are so strong, that the Cowboys are considering adding 100 suites to bring the total up to around 500. All that and supposedly ticket sales have only been open to current season ticket holders. They still have a year and a half to sale to the rest of the public and they have only been on sale for about two months or so.

In news and development somewhat related to Jerryworld, there is a cool rendering of the Ballpark, Jerryworld and Glorypark (u/c)...

It's still a crap load of parking, but a helluva lot better than what is there now.
Some more fairly recent renderings of Glorypark...

I think this stadium would look better if they left the roof off completely so that the arches would stay really visible like they are right now. The rendering of the finished stadium looks very cold and sterile to me. It sort of looks like what would happen if a flying saucer and the Superdome had a baby. A very big baby of coarse. It's too bad that the stadium is so far away from Dallas, but on the other hand, if this stadium comes out looking as plain jane as it looks in the drawings, then maybe it's a good thing it won't be too visible.

Its only about 15 minutes from DT Dallas, and maybe 5-10 minutes from the Dallas City Limits. And its pretty damned visible. When I go to meet my girlfriend for lunch in Irving, I can see it clearly from where George Bush Turnpike and 114. Huge structure!!!!! Looks 2-3 times larger than the Ballpark, which you can't see at all from the afformentioned location.

What's amazing is that as big as it is when you pass buy, the actual playing field and an entire bowls worth of seats sits something like 50 feet below street level. Supposedly, you can stick the Statue of Liberty on the 50 yard line and close the roof with room to spare.

15 minutes is too far away, IMO. Plus, in 'real time' its more like 25 or 30 minutes after you add traffic and that nifty little jog in Arlington. I wanted the stadium nearer to the city of Dallas. I was hoping for DT, but O well.
But it is true that the stadium can be seen from very far away. It looks like a tiny eggshell way off on the horizon.

That thing is huge overall, and the roofline really adds to the height.

Quite a stadium for sure but the prices for the seats are way out of line for most current fans. JJ may have to adjust them accordingly to fill the seats.

Yeah, just ask how Tarrant County residents how they feel about driving to the other side of the Metroplex for all the major sports events... :)

I don't know if you read one of the articles above, but ticket sales, even at those prices, have been just fine. The demand is strong enough for the prices.

Don't know, but the deal should be worth North of $500 million.
More than likely, it will be either:
"[major corporation name] Stadium at [either Glorypark or in Arlington]
or
"Tom Landry Field at [major corporation name] Stadium"
I think most will agree that some company is going to slap their name across that big roof.

there is American Airlines Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Center) located in Dallas, TX
there is American Airlines Arena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Arena) located in Miami, FL
those are the only two venues that have naming rights with AA

but do i agree with a previous poster that it should be Tom Landry Field at [major corporation name] Stadium

I really like the idea of Tom Landry field at (..insert coporate name..) stadium as stated by some above, although Jerry will probably name it something like Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, Dallas Cowboys Southwest Airlines Stadium, etc.

I personally think the "Texas Stadium" moniker should stay in some way. AT&T Field at Texas Stadium or something. The name Texas Stadium is as synonymous with the Cowboys franchise as Mile High Stadium is to Denver, Soldier Field is to Chicago, etc. There is supposed to be a large fan plaza outside the stadium... name it in honor of Tom Landry, but Texas Stadium has to follow the Cowboys to Arlington IMO.

Am I the only person this does nothing for? It looks like / reminds me of the Cardinals stadium out in Glendale -- except with large steel arches as part of the design.
The Colts new stadium (Lucas Oil stadium) is a better design, IMHO. More original at least.

You were saying they don't look alike? Bland exteriors, same mostly-covered stands, the only difference is that (non)University of Phoenix stadium is more of a shell while the Dallas exterior is a bunch of panels in a more traditional design...
It does nothing for me from an architecture standpoint. I don't expect much from football stadiums but some originality would be nice.

If anything, the Cardials stadium got their design from the original Texas Stadium, which is what the New Cowboys Stadium is modling itself after. Only real difference is, the Cardinals' stadium is (supposed) to look like a coiled snake. Lucas Oil Stadium does have a nice, throwback design, but I say the new Cowboys Stadium is the ideal model for the futuristic design.
You're not alone when you think it's uninspired, but on this thread, you're in the minority.
And I gotta say, the New Stadium looks a thousand times better than Texas Stadium (1971-2009, it will be missed).
p.s. GO COWBOYS !!!

Okay, so they are both silverish and have retractable roofs. Damn, they're identical.
Jerryworld looks like a modern Texas Stadium, which is a bit fitting since Texas Stadium is already one of the most identifiable stadiums in American sports.
