Time for another compilation thread with more comments and thoughts about my New York adventures.
New York is a city of festivals. I stumbled across a number of festivals and street parties along Avenue of the Americas throughout the summer.

9/11 fell on a weekday, but I was at Ground Zero the day before to soak in the atmosphere, which was full of protesting flavour.

I think I've seen this photo posted on SSC before.

I didn't know much about Brooklyn before, and wasn't too interested in visiting at first. But then, hovering around Manhattan all the time was a bit of a waste, so I headed across the river to see what lies beyond. What I saw was a mix of good and bad.

http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_2842.jpg
I forget why I wandered to the Upper East Side to walk along 3 Avenue that day. At first I wanted to visit a friend but in the end I forgot all about it.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_3131.jpg
Staten Island was another one of those 'trips to the unknown'. I was struck by the low density despite its proximity to Manhattan. I did a very long 5km walk around the water that afternoon in addition to visiting a historic site.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060813/IMG_0043.jpg
It is incredibly difficult to walk straight in New York's streets. My head turns upward now and then to see skyscrapers stretch into the sky.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060903/IMG_2541.jpg
Seeing the skyline from the subway platform was not something I expected would happen, so I tried my best to position my camera against the fencing to get this shot.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_3094.jpg
Queensboro Bridge ... I wanted to walk it but didn't get a chance to do so!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3249.jpg
A nice subway station!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060910/IMG_3987.jpg
A nice monument!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_2845.jpg
This is a Trump building, right? One of the forumers asked me to feed his Trump obsession. ;)
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_3146.jpg
The reason why I took this photo was to get the street and the flag, although the wires got in the way. I really hate these wires hanging everywhere.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060813/IMG_0215.jpg
After seeing so many of these old buildings (brownstones they're called?), I am beginning to see why staircases are so important for entrances. It looks so much more grand!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_2890.jpg
These don't look as grand.

http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060910/IMG_4068.jpg
I had an ambitious goal of covering every avenue from Midtown to Lower Manhattan. Needless to say, it was impossible to accomplish in only a few months' time.

Columbus Avenue in the Upper West Side seemed a bit run-down compared to one block over at Central Park West.

I like reddish bricks. It brings out the grandeur and matches a lot of other colours.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3744.jpg
As you might have noticed, I take a lot of pictures at random. However, I wanted to get as many fire halls as possible, hence this photo.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_2930.jpg
I rode the Roosevelt Island Tramway several times over the summer. I wanted to get a good set of photos from it, and I really enjoyed the quick ride to the other side. This one made it to the UPC finals. :)
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3246.jpg
An oasis in the city.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3511.jpg
See that red building on the left?
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3496.jpg
Shellfish!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060910/IMG_3948.jpg
I purposedly waited for the bus to get into this picture.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3658.jpg
Oooooohhh baby!
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20061015/IMG_1378.jpg
Too bad the exhibit was closed. I wanted to walk around it to do some close-ups.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20061015/IMG_1390.jpg
They don't build buildings like they used to.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060903/IMG_2641.jpg
New York's sense of security is quite evident in the protective mesh. I don't like living on the ground floor because I prefer opening the blinds and windows. Knowing that people are walking right outside and can easily peer in makes me feel rather uncomfortable.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060904/IMG_2942.jpg
I should've rotated this picture.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060813/IMG_0086.jpg
25 cents for a bus ride ... where else can you find a good deal .. except the free shuttle in the Financial District.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3286.jpg
A walk around Roosevelt Island revealed some nice surprises that I didn't plan for.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3425.jpg
New York is a fairly green city. There are a lot of small parks here and there and trees are not that scarce after all.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3653.jpg
A highway runs underneath it.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3503.jpg
It's not that dense, is it?
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3512.jpg

http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3368.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3374.jpg
There wasn't much else to see from this park. The Queens side looked so empty while the Manhattan side was so full. A river makes quite a difference.

Reconstruction @ Ground Zero
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060916/IMG_0148.jpg
The view from the top of the chimney would be quite nice.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060909/IMG_3412.jpg
Coney Island was a bit of a disappointment to me. The beach wasn't anything special although the boardwalk was OK. The games were a bit outdated and the Nathan's hot dogs were so small! Nevertheless, I was curious as to what it was like so I made the trip.

Now I have seen ESB from both north and south.
http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060916/IMG_0172.jpg
Some of the views northwards from 7 WTC were pretty darn cool.

- sunset from Top of the Rock
- more from Chinatown
- Lower East Side
- Foster's Hearst
