Winter Park Resort, one of Colorado's largest ski areas, will nearly double the size of its open terrain on Friday, Dec. 15.
The ski resort plans to open another 764 acres at Parsenn Bowl and Vasquez Ridge on Friday, for a total of 1,615 acres of trails. Two new lifts -- the Timberline and the Pioneer Express -- will open at the same time to give skiers and snowboarders access to the new terrain.
Winter Park's $4.8 million in mountain capital improvements for the season also include remodeling the Snoasis mid-mountain lodge, improving snow fencing and moving the Advanced Sales Fulfillment Center to the ground floor of Moffat Station.
Owned by the city and county of Denver, Winter Park is operated by Intrawest Corp. of Vancouver, Canada. The resort is located 67 miles northwest of Denver in Grand County.
The ski area reported more than 1 million skier visits during its 2005-2006 season for the first time since the late 1990s. A skier visit is a standard performance measure in the ski industry, and is defined as the use of a purchased or complimentary lift ticket by a skier or snowboarder in a day.
Winter Park opened for the 2006-2007 season on Nov. 15 and expects to close in mid-April next year.
