Film may be shot at WEM
The Edmonton Journal
Published: Saturday, December 16, 2006
EDMONTON - A major feature film, possibly starring Robin Williams, is rumoured to be in the works for West Edmonton Mall next year.
Lisanne Lewis, spokeswoman for the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, confirmed some details and said a major production company has shown interest in the site. However, paperwork nailing down the location and cast has yet to be signed.
"Nothing's in writing yet and (there are) a lot of maybes and pendings," she said. "They're promising to give us some details, hopefully by mid- next week."

Alberta has been a small hotspot for big movies in recent years. The Assassination of Jesse James, starring Brad Pitt, was shot in the summer of 2005 at Fort Edmonton Park, and Brokeback Mountain, 2006 winner of three Oscars, was filmed in the Calgary area.
Last month, the provincial government gave a $12.5- million emergency grant to the Alberta Film Development fund to help attract more film productions.

It looks like this movie will be a low budget movie like the movie "Snow Day". It's still good news though.

A documentary about the fur trade last summer, and about a dozen local small budget flicks, mostly about the past. One was in Finnish. They were big attractions at the Bay Street Film Festival in October. Another notable movie was the finishing of a project begun in the 1920s called The Fatal Flower. DVDs are available at a few local shoppes. It's pretty good. A silent flick.
The biggest movies filmed here (in the area) would probably be Highway 61 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_61_%28film%29). It is "The second best Canadian rock'n'roll road movie ever."
Snowcake, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowcake) which was released in North America just 17 days ago, was filmed in Wawa.
Confederation College also has a media department and makes an annual movie as part of their Keep It Short Movie project.
Nothing too big, but we do have a film industry.
I'm sorry if I ruined your attempt at making my city look bad. :(

My friend is working on this movie and is moving to Edmonton for four months to do it so it looks like it's going ahead.

What you see here, children, is an example of residents of an insecure larger city making fun of a smaller city going through hard times. This is because out of the twenty largest cities in the country, Edmonton sucks the most. :)

Everyone has civic pride, guys. But that doesn't mean you have to bash other cities to express it. Thunder Bay's occasional jabs at Sudbury are good natured fun. We're bothers! Identical twins, practically! What Edmontonians on this board have been doing to my city since I repeated a joke I have heard countless times from Calgarians is borderline verbal assualt. :(
The :) means I'm not serious.

Stunning wit. Really, really worth admiring. Especially considering the intended target, Vid, whome obviously wouldn't comprehend such slight of tounge.
Is there a sarcasm icon I can attach here somewhere?

Umm. Gotta ask. What is the best Canadian rock'n'roll road movie ever? Hard Core Logo or SlapShot?
Haven't seen hard core logo, so I have to say Slapshot. If that counts as a rock and roll movie. In which category is Fubar?
I liked you and thunderbay a hell of a lot better when you were banned.
Likewise, my respect for Edmonton is dwindling thusly. I will mourn the loss of the many tourism dollars you would bring to our city in the coming moments. :(

Wow. Alberta film production has really dropped in the last two years...is there anything else being filmed, or in the pipeline??
I think the last major film in Calgary was "Resurrecting the Champ" with Josh Hartnett and Samuel Jackson (Teri Hatcher and Alan Alda as well)...but that was almost a year ago I believe.

Jessica Alba also shot a movie at West Edmonton Mall a while back.
I know a Bollywood movie was filmed in the summer of 2005 at WEM. The actors/actresses were doing a musical in the big ship
