The station is just amazing...thanks for sharing. Very beautiful and depressing at the same time.

Have there ever been any concrete plans to do any adaptive re-use of this gem?

Damn, whats Buffalo gonna end up doin to that awesome building? If they wait any longer it looks like all they will be able to do is tear it down. WZ1, I know that ur gonna enter the new photo contest -- others better get to steppin if they are going to get anything that will beat the Central Terminal.

Reminds me of the Terminal in Detroit that's also abandoned.

Where in Buffalo is the terminal? I don't recognize it?? And I've been downtown Buffalo a cpl times!

One day when the Earth gets overpopulated all those buildings gonna get rebuilt...

Ken - abandoned in 1979.... And the terminal is in the "hood" on the east side of Buffalo, somewhat a high risk neighbourhood, this is part of the reason it has never been developed.

it was the hood after the trains left...being in the East Side grit was an effect of the joblessness...not that being the effect on he Terminal.

Basically the station was built to handle a city of 1,000,000 and a metro of 3,000,000...Buffalo's original direction around 1940. The St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal moved shipping with boats around Buffalo, not thru it...and trains gave way to trucks by the late 50's. :)

Wow, great thread. I was a UB student from '01-03, and I went exploring the Central Terminal with a couple of friends back in late '02. We couldn't find any way to gain access to the concourse level, and instead we wandered around the two/three lower levels for a while. Most memorable were the lobby area to the far east side of the building (I believe this is where the "dignitary" stop let the important people off) and a bathroom/shower stall room just off it where the whole thing was in a much more advanced state of decay than the rest of the place (as if it were possible). The other thing I remember most was that there were a lot of newpapers in the rubble on the (lowest) floor that dated to somewhere right around late 1984/early '85.

Great tour. The lobby of Buffalo Central Terminal seems to be in much better shape than the lobby of the Michigan Central Station in Detroit.

Wow...how does a building of that caliber be abandoned and left to rot? That main concourse is an amazing space.

The sheer stupidity that was the many descisions made by people in the older cities in the 50's, 60's and 70's in allowing things to just rot and decline without giving any thought of a new use for something that is not useful for it's original use?

the other problem is that the immediate neighbourhood around the terminal is the ghetto.. its a really tough area.

Whoa - great pics, but how the heck did you manage to get in?

Usually, big abandoned buildings like this house squatters/vagrants, but I don't see much evidence of that here - recent crackdown, perhaps?

Anyway, some really nice shots - thanks for posting.

Great tour. The lobby of Buffalo Central Terminal seems to be in much better shape than the lobby of the Michigan Central Station in Detroit.

Exactly what I was going to say. MCS is in horrible condition, and that's putting it lightly. The restoration group that owns BCT should consider themselves lucky that BCT isn't in half the crappy shape MCS is in. (and of course kudos to them for keeping it in good shape)

Wow. My heart just broke. Buffalo Central Terminal and Detroit's Book Tower are the two most depressing highrises in America for me.... Such amazing potential. I find it spooky that in one of your shots the "Ticket" stalls are still visible; a throwback to better days. I can only imagine throngs of people pushing past each other in a rush in that main foyer seventy years ago. Amazing shots. Beautiful and sad. Good work.
