I don't know if you get him out west, but the one who should be sacrificed first is Jarret from Idomo. In general I have really liked Ikea ads over the years. I heard one recently with the Ikea guy that was irritating, though, with him singing.

AFAIK, Idomo a local 'mom & pop'

I haven't seen or heard the Ikea guy in a long time (most of the ads appear to be locally done) but agree that he has outlived his humour

The Ikea guy is only one part of their advertising campaigns over the years. They do different ads for all countries, and have won quite a few awards over the years.

No, the Subway guy is Jarod, I believe. He is truly irritating as well. Jarret is this old hippie guy with a high pitched whiney voice who advertises his own store.

Can they be as bad as the UPSET STOMACH* DIARROEHA ads with people acting out Lambada Awareness Week and miming having the squirts? I think they are trying to sell Pepto Bismol, but I went running to the washroom to throw up. And the Kelloggs All Bran ad with all the constipated business types whispering to each other the merits of bran.

harls
12-19-2006, 09:22 PM
That Raisin Bran ad is from the 80's, I don't know why they brought it back. They just superimposed the new 'raisin bran' logo on the box and the 'raisin bran truck' (wtf? raisin bran truck?) . I'm guessing the marketing types at kellogg's were either a) too lazy to think of something new to market their cereal or b) thought it would be totally cool to rehash a retarded lumberjack commercial. I'm guessing a little bit of both.

Jared's not on the subway ads anymore. It's that horrible pile of shit Jon Lovitz screaming at me to EAT FRESH or EAT STEAK every ten minutes... how could anybody think that this would make me want to eat there? f'n subway..every single store smells the same - like hot garbage and processed cheese...prepared fresh! from synthetic superlettuce and steroid tomatoes!

It is a very clever idea to bring back old ads, as it takes people back to their youths, and saves money on making new ads! About 15 years ago I was involved in one of those study groups (sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken) to try and determine new ideas for marketing. At the time Kentucky Fried Chicken was desperately trying to become hip, and had rebranded themselves as KFC and had pretty much dumped all association with the past style. We were all filmed in the study group. I brought up an idea I had had in my mind for some time... why not tap into the nostalgia of old 60's ads and marketing? It would appeal to the baby boomers such as myself, who had fond memories of Colonel Saunders ads. Weirdly, about a few years after that, Kentucky Fried Chicken came out with a huge retro trend, bringing back old ads and the Colonel, etc... I often wonder if some of that was due to that study.

I find Ikea's tv ads to be much better than the radio ads.

Hey I read someplace the reason we don't see Jarod on subway commercials anymore is because he's dead. Yes the story goes that he choked to death on one of his subs. The company fearing a p.r. nightmare paid a large amount of hush money to his family,so much money in fact that they had to dramatically reduce their advertising budget .....as a result we know have Jon Lovlitz. That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

It is tempting to believe that story, but I suspect it is just an urban myth/wishful thinking. My guess is that with all the chicks, booze and fame that he bloated out again and packed on a couple of million pounds to become
Kirsty Alley fat again, thus they don't want to use him. Just a guess.

I do think Shelly Long was a few cards short of a full deck. I saw her interviewed once, and she was all facial twitches and involuntary one-eye -blinking and she looked close to the edge. Last pic I saw of Kirsty was quite unflattering, and she was bending over to pick up something. Made J Lo's rump look like a scrawny bony ass by comparison. I used to hate Kirsty during the Cheers years, but I became a big fan of hers during Fat Actress. I think that series was pure brilliance and she excelled at her role.

And if it is a small Quebec company, often they will make the two language versions of the ad with one person whom they think is 100% fluently bilingual, but who in reality has an accent when speaking English. Garaga garage doors used to do this and old Starfrit ads..
