Dubai to develop Dominican Republic theme park

Santo Domingo.– Dubai-based leisure and entertainment turnkey solutions provider, Select Contracts, has successfully delivered the conceptual design and feasibility study for a 700 acre leisure and entertainment development to the Government of the Dominican Republic.

According to a press release published by Ameinfo.com, the landmark project, which is being championed by President Leonel Fernandez and numerous Major Baseball League players, involves a theme park, water park, family entertainment center, hotels, golf course, villas, baseball stadium and a hall of fame.

The project will be home to the first Caribbean theme park as well as celebrating the country's contribution to baseball.

Select Contracts has been appointed to see the project through from concept to operations and is also a stakeholder in the project, which represents another stepping stone for the vertically integrated company as they seek to become globally renowned for their leisure and entertainment expertise and knowledge.

President Leonel Fernandez has approved the turning of the Quisqueya Ball Park into a baseball theme park – Baseball Land.
Project promoter, engineer Jesus Rodriguez Sandoval says it would be more like the Arlington Ballpark of Texas, the Coors Field of Colorado or the Turner Field of Atlanta. The project calls for the remodeling and expansion of the Quisqueya Ball park, construction of a 28,000 square meter tower, a four-star hotel with 36,443 square meters of construction, 14 towers for apartments and four villas with 15,396 square meters of construction, a 7,790 square meter shopping mall, a 11,330 square meter baseball museum, a 30,400 meter parking building, plazas, green areas and recreational areas.
Works began early this month with the relocation of the baseball offices located within the stadium.
Rodriguez recently presented the project to the visiting vice president of the Mets, Jeff Wilpon and Mets general manager Omar Minaya who met at his home. President Leonel Fernandez also was there for the meeting. During the meeting, the possible visit of the Mets during the 2006 spring training was discussed, as well as the possibility of pMajor League Baseball games being played here in 2007, when Baseball Land complex would be completed.
More than 100 Dominicans are expected to be on MLB rosters come the 2005 season. The Listin Diario reports that on 16 November, President Fernandez had spoken with the owner of the Anaheim Angels, Arte Moreno and invited that team to hold their spring training events in Santo Domingo, an invitation that was well received. The call came on occasion of Vladimir Guerrero winning the Most Valuable Player award of the American League.

MIAMI -- Dos ambiciosos proyectos, que podrían ser completados en los próximos dos años y medio, otorgarían a República Dominicana una de las más modernas estructuras del deporte y el entretenimiento del área del Caribe.

El martes, Leonardo Matos Berrido, presidente de la Liga Dominicana de Béisbol (LIDOM), reveló a ESPNdeportes.com que un viejo proyecto para reconstruir el estadio Quisqueya de Santo Domingo fue reactivado y que en los próximos días será presentado al gobierno dominicano para su aprobación.

"Ya estamos dando los últimos toques al diseño de ingeniería y entonces lo pasaremos al presidente de la república", dijo Matos Berrido.

Además de la remodelación del principal estadio de béisbol de la isla, el proyecto incluye el rescate de la zona en que se encuentra, en el centro de la capital dominicana.

Un centro comercial, edificios para parqueos y apartamentos y un parque recreativo comunitario forman parte del proyecto.

"La idea no es nueva, pero lo que hace viable el proyecto en esta ocasión es que sería construido con capital privado. Inversionistas dominicanos y extranjeros son los que pondrán el dinero necesario para hacer realidad la gran ambición de muchos deportistas dominicanos", dijo Matos Berrido desde Dominicana.

Las revelaciones de Matos Berrido coincidieron con otro importante anuncio acerca de otro gran proyecto de la industria del entretenimiento y el deporte.

La empresa Contracts Select, basada en Dubai, Emiratos Arabes Unidos, anunció el martes que completó el proceso de diseñar y elaborar un proyecto del un parque temático (al estilo Disneylandia) en Dominicana.

De acuerdo al informe de prensa de publicado por Ameinfo.com, la construcción es apoyada por el presidente Leonel Fernández y numerosos jugadores de Grandes Ligas. Incluirá un parque de atracciones, un parque acuático, un campo de golf, un centro de diversiones para toda la familia, un estadio de béisbol y un Salón de Fama.

Sería el primer parque temático del Caribe, al tiempo que se dedicaría un espacio para reconocer la gran contribución del béisbol a la isla.

"Tenemos una estrategia ambiciosa para el crecimiento dentro de nuestros campos de especialización específicos y los proyectos tales como el parque temático del béisbol pueden ayudarnos solamente a alcanzar estas metas", dijo Sanjay Murthy, gerente de ventas y mercadeo de Select Contracts.

"El ocio y la hospitalidad son dos áreas muy deseables para el desarrollo y nuestra experiencia extensa en estas áreas es inestimable para nuestros clientes.

Esto nos puso ciertamente en buena posición cuando nos eligieron para este proyecto único en la República Dominicana", agregó Murthy.

Select Contracts informó que tendrá un personal trabajando a tiempo completo en Santo Domingo desde los primeros meses del 2007 y que planea terminar el proyecto para el 2009.

La empresa, fundada en 1978, es especialista en la construcción de parques de atracciones, instalaciones deportivas, hoteles, marinas y centros de diversión.

Tradicionalmente trabajan en comunión con dueños, desarrolladores urbanos, inversionistas y gobiernos para garantizar la efectividad de las obras.

Select Contracts realiza obras actualmente en Qatar, Irlanda, Bahrain, Polonia, Canadá, Inglaterra, China, Indonesia, Estados Unidos y Arabia Saudita.

"Realmente no sabía nada de ese asunto, pero ojalá y se convierta en una realidad, igual que nuestro proyecto de modernizar el Estadio Quisqueya y mejorar todo ese entorno para beneficio de los habitantes y todos los deportistas", dijo Matos Berrido.

The president will be presenting these projects soon. Santo Domingo is going through a construction boom right now. A light metro is being build (elevated and subterranean) and there are many residential towers going up. In a few years Santo Domingo is going to have a new face.:D
