This morning, at 11:00AM Belgrade time, there was a small ceremony to mark the beginning of reconstruction of one of Belgrade's landmarks. It was built in 1965 and stood at the height of 202 meters. It was the only tower in the world which had an equilateral triangle for its cross section.

On April 29th, 1999 it was finally destroyed in a terrorist attack by NATO after a number of failed attempts.

The new tower will be even stronger and taller, standing at 205 meters. The reconstruction should finnish within 20 months:banana:

OK, so now both sides have had their say. No more about legality of NATO's bombing of Belgrade in this thread.

So they're building it back acording to the same plan, or is it just the same esxterior plan with plenty of improvments on the inside?

Yep...same architectural plan(one original surviving architect is involved) , 21st century building technologies. The original tower took five years to build, this one will be built within 20 months (by late summer/early Fall 2008)

By the way, one thing thats pissing me off, are certain people that are saying that Belgrade doesn't need this "communication" tower anymore. What with the thousands of satellites, GPS, etc. I guess these people have never been to a city like Toronto, where just the entrance to the CN Tower is charged 22$ for adults, not to mention the two restaurants and a movie theater on top. Its not only a landmark for the city like Toronto, but also serves as our "North Star" - it can be seen from kilometers away.

Yes it is. Not only is the tower 205 meter in height, it itself sits on top of Belgrade's Avala mountain, which reaches a height of ~511m.

Its really the worlds tallest tower:D
