According to the latest census estimates, North Dakota gained almost 1,300 people in one year, from 4/1/2005 to 4/1/2006. It went up from 634,605 to 635,867. From 2003 to 2006, North Dakota grew by 3,247 people. This is a state that had seen decline for many years. The decline of North Dakota was known by everyone, and thought of as irreversible. Apparently the bleeding of people as a result of the Flood of '97 stopped.
North Dakota shot up to number 42 out of 50 states in 2005-2006 growth percentage. We're no longer in the bottom-5.
The only problem is that we're still 6,300 or so in the hole from the Census number.
To think, if that flood never happened, we'd probably be at over 650,000 by now.
Anyway, kudos to North Dakota!! And kudos to Governor John Hoeven and Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad. These three men have progressive visions for ND's future. It's good to see us growing again.

Congrats North Dakota! Over a thousand people is something to be proud of because a few states are losing by the thousands.

To think that I have more people living in a 10 mile circle around my house than in the entire state of North Dakota is really odd.

To think that Los Angeles county has more people than the entire state of Missouri and Kansas combined, or that Cook county Illinois has almost as many people as the entire state of Missouri. Now that is really odd.
BTW Chicago city limits have more people than all of Kansas.

But there is virtually no one in the rest of the state. Subtracting the Chicago metro, I wonder who has more people...Illinois or North Dakota.
And we all know that Chicago is really just an extension of Gary, anyway.
So that brings your state down to about Wyoming levels. Congrats.

The state is so small in population. But still, I guess, cool.

Well, theres 650,000 people living in Metro East alone (the Illinois portion of the St. Louis metropolitain area), then adding in cities like Springfield, Peoria, Rockford, etc. which all have over 150,000 residents in their metros, then it becomes clear we arent quite Wyoming ;)
Ahh, Gary. What a magnificent city!
Congrats to ND though. I have a friend that goes to UND in Grand Forks. Great aviation program i hear.

The City of Cincinnati would love to have that many move in each year.

It wouldn't shock me if that is an underestimate in and of itself. Western ND is growing and the Census Bureau shows Williston and Dickinson both still losing population. All this while Williston is coping with a severe HOUSING SHORTAGE.
