Some of you may have been to the awesome site www.nycsubway.org. Here are some cool pictures I found of MARTA in it's infancy:

MARTA train on the bridge over the Downtown Connector (only 6 lanes too) between Georgia State and King Memorial Stations on the East Line (August 10, 1979).

Westbound train at Omni Station on the West Line (December 1981).

Train at Avondale Station on the East Line (August 9, 1979).

Train in the Avondale Yard Shop (December 1981).

Train at North Avenue Station (December 1981).
Anyone have other pics of MARTA in its early days (1970-1985)?

Cool pics.
Here are a few scans from an old promotional brochure published in the mid-1980s as Phase I of the rail system was wrapping up construction. The quality isn't great but they're still fun to look at.

Several East Line stations upon completion. I love the narrative talking about how they "blend in well" with the surrounding historic neighborhoods. This was when MARTA's concrete fortress approach to station design was at its peak.

Once upon a time MARTA cars had padded seats:

Shots of the control center, and an old fishbowl bus:

Finally, some proto-TOD @ Ga State station. Cool skyline view as well (note how Midtown is nearly non-existent):

Those pics are great! It's amazing to me how forward thinking Atlanta was, but now...
Interesting thread. Too bad MARTA hasn't been expanded very much since back in the 80's and I know the north line was extended a little bit. Hopefully that will change in the future.
When the Hiawatha LRT line opened in Minneapolis a couple of years ago(we had no rail-transit prior to that) I got my hands on the book that came out with the grand opening showing how it was built. I look forward to showing it to my grandkids in the future.

The network is essentially complete, as planned isn't it?
