I took this the other day while driving back from the DFW Airport. Sorry for the crappy quality... I'll have to go back and reshoot this one of these days.

Downtown is a representation of any given city. Long ago Dallas chose to build a downtown that was only used for commerce. They believed that residents living downtown would be synonymous with crime (part of its mid-20th century/white flight mentality that largely remains). So, in a sense, Dallas' bucolic downtown is exactly what the city leaders wanted.

However, that's about to change. Several projects are going on downtown that will bring both residents and energy back to downtown. WFAA-TV in Dallas reported that the downtown population is expected to double this year alone and will grow to 10,000 residents in 2010 compared to just 200 in 1999. In ten years, downtown Dallas will likely be a shadow of what we've known it to be for the last 20 years.

Dallas in the pics impressive as usual...I'm going to be passing by this summer on a road trip probably stay for a night or two on my way to chicago...I can't wait...I'm just a little nervous about the high crime rate. If a local wants to chime in and let me know what areas to avoid (as really any big city is going to have this) let me know! thanks...Oh...one other thing is dallas really not allowed to build anything over the 1000ft mark? I heard they can't due to...love field?
Utaaah!

I agree totally -- it's good to see another optimist join the forum. Downtown Dallas is on the verge of a major rebirth. The several various office-to-apartment/condo conversions scheduled for completion this year and next, along with plentiful new construction, will instantly breathe life into the city's long-slumbering core. The burgeoning Arts District and Victory Park areas are quickly filling the gap between DT and the long-thriving Uptown, forming a large, dense, livable center rivalling that of any other sunbelt city. The DART and TRE rail lines have already and will continue to greatly improve access to and mobility within DT, helping to counter the auto-centric growth patterns of the past century. Dallas isn't on par with NY, SF, and Chicago yet, but it's on the right path. As the city's motto says, Think Big!

Well none of us want DT Dallas to be dead, but that's how it is right now. As is said above, things are about to change rapidly, as thousands of units will finally open in the next couple of years. I don't think it will be super dramatic, but improvement nonetheless. Its not as bad as many say right now, as you can actually do things there, but not close to what we want ultimately. There are clubs, bars, lots of restaurants, World Aquarium, West End(restaurants, museums, history), Pioneer Plaza, Victory starting to open up, Farmers Market and the Arts District all downtown. I'm sure anyone can find something to do between that. But, we are aiming for unseen greatness. At least I am.
As for a downtown representing a city, I agree and wish that more people in Dallas thought so. But with that being true, you can't dismiss the city as a whole based on one area. I mean look at that second pic. Think of all the people in there. Do you think they all go to Fort Worth for nightlife? Where do you think the SMU kids go? Adults who live in Dallas?

^ No, it wasn't. There is a place where you can see both Dallas and Fort Worth, though. John, can you post that photo you took a while back showing both city skylines?

I believe the skyline you see on the far left of the pic is that of the Galleria district, which is located due north of downtown Dallas, at the intersection of the North Dallas Tollway and I-635 (LBJ Freeway). This photo is pointed east, where Fort Worth would be off to the right of this pic, to the west.
