VANCOUVER (CP) - British Columbia Transmission Corporation plans to spend $3.2 billion on B.C.'s electrical transmission network over next 10 years, it said Monday.

The Crown corporation filed its capital plan report with the B.C. Utilities Commission, which regulates the province's electricity utilities on behalf of B.C. ratepayers.

"The B.C. economy is growing rapidly and demand for electricity is increasing," Jane Peverett, BCTC president and CEO, said in a release.

"This investment is required to operate the 18-thousand kilometer electricity grid that moves electricity around the province and to expand it to meet our province's current and future needs."

The corporation said its program will focus on three areas that will increase the power transfer capability of existing assets, extend their life and improve system reliability and security.

It said it plans to spend $1.9 billion on growth-related expenditures, $1.1 billion on sustaining expenditures, and $170 million on computer and control centre expenditures.

About $600 million is earmarked for two projects: $240 million for the Vancouver Island transmission reinforcement project to increase transmission capacity to the island and meet growing demand, and $349 million for the Interior to Lower Mainland transmission reinforcement project.

The BC Transmission Corporation is responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of British Columbia's publicly owned electrical transmission system.
