I had no idea so many cities were the birthplace of the civil rights movement.

future home of The International Civil Rights Museum (former Woolworth Store where four NC A&T students started a sitins demonstration which spreaded nationwide.) The "Greensboro Sitins" was a historic event because it started the civil rights movement of the 1960s. (being it was the first major event of the decade that started a nationwide movement) There is a Greensboro Sitin exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. The International Civil Rights Museum will also feature exhibits of historic events that happen around the country. There was an effort at one time to permantly bring the Rosa Parks bus to this museum.

While cities such as Birmingham received alot of attention, Greensboro also has its place in civil rights history. Another major event that received national and even world attention happened in Greensboro back in 1979. The Ku Klux Klan shot and killed members of an anti-klan rally. The event is known as "The Greensboro Massacre". The event is even being debated today by citizens and city leaders after 28 years. There was talk of a police cover-up and that the police department knew what was about to happen.
