 Calicut (Kozhikode) has a low cost of living. The rates of apartments on the South Beach Road is only 2000 / sq.ft while the same kind is 2600 in Cochin. IF you have the money to live happily ever after getting a flat in Calicut is best. It has an International airport, Very near to the City center 1.5 kms to the Railway Station and Bus Station. What else can you want.Presence of posh residential areas like chevayoor, westhill, nadakavu, chevarambalam etc. A few softare companies are looking for places around Kozhikode including HCL technologies.....Real Estate is cheap and having a variety of options with a lot of builders based in calicut and rest of the country..

Move to make Kozhikode IT hub hailed

Special Correspondent

Major firms offer to set up units at proposed park

# Corporation urged to include IT park in master plan
# IT park expected to generate job opportunities

KOZHIKODE: The State Government's decision to develop Kozhikode as an Information Technology (IT) hub has brought cheer to organisations that have been campaigning for the development of IT in the region.

A convention of these organisations recently suggested that the IT park proposed to be established in Kozhikode be named Cyber Park, as Thiruvananthapuram has a Technopark and Kochi an Info Park. full story (http://www.hindu.com/2007/01/23/stories/2007012304050300.htm)

Good realisation though late.
I am sure if Kozhikode had the first IT park in the state Kerala it would definitely
not have been the slowest growing IT park and take 15 years just to export Rs 650 cr.

I had only mentioned a known fact. Without having any govt pampering Kochi and Calicut grew. If it were not a capital the only organisation that would exist in Trivandrum will be ISRO - which needs deserted places for launching sites.

Do you know, what exactly is the status with FAR (floor area ratio) in Calicut.
There is a controversy in Kochi. These are usually decided by dumbos in the govt
and there is a raging opposition from almost all quarters in Kochi. The planners who are supposed to plan, but these parasites who
eats people's tax money instead puke out some moronic restrictions in the guise of "plans". Hardly have they spelt
out a plan for road/transport development.
The booming real estate scenario has not seen a launch for past one month due to this uncertainty.
Is there a similar problem in Calicut ? Govt will surely have to retreat from its stupid stand.

Kozhikode, Jan 26 (IANS) Six high profile institutions in Kerala have come together to ensure that this north Kerala city becomes the next big IT destination in the state after Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

The core group working towards a cyber park in Kozhikode consists of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC), Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K), National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College-Kozhikode), Kerala Builders Forum, the IT Forum of Kozhikode and the Calicut Management Association.

The project has the backing of the state government, said P. Zakeer, MCC president and secretary of the Calicut IT initiative (CITI).

"We had a full-fledged discussion with the special IT team of the government led by IT secretary K. Jyothilal. Things are on the right track. The government is fully convinced that Kozhikode has the potential to become Kerala's latest IT destination," Zakeer told IANS.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who handles the IT portfolio, last week came out with a draft IT policy and also stressed that the district would be promoted in a big way and infrastructure developed too.

Leading IT companies operating from IT hubs Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark at Kochi have also expressed their support for the venture.

"IBS, US Technology and NeST have all assured us that they would be the first to set up operations as and when Cyber Park becomes a reality," said Zakeer.

"We are now looking for a 100 acre plot of land, hopefully near the airport. Since the state industries minister (Elamaram Karim) hails from Kozhikode, we are certain that things will move in the right direction and at a faster pace."

Also boosting chances of the project seeing light of day are the large number of NRIs from Kozhikode who would be only too willing to chip in with funds to ensure speedy take off.

But HP's proposal was in Kochi right from the beginning, I mean, it was not shifted or anything. (They are starting at L&T tech park and plan to shift to their own campus). Probably you meant the HCL proposal, which minister Elamaram Kareem mentioned last month or so. They were considering Calicut and Kochi. I don't know any details, if you have any info do post it here.

HP announced its plans to take up L&T tech park for its software development centre last year itself. Since L&T Infotech has also announced its entry, HP will take up a few floors in the building and later move to their own campus.

( It is there in Kochi thread I posted it again two days back when somebody cought the info there- it will be better if I don't post it here as it is not related to this forum).

That HCL is looking for space in Kozhikode (even if they start operations in Kochi ) is what i understood from the news I read in a malayalam daily).

Hospitality school a boost to district’s higher education dreams
Monday January 29 2007 11:24 IST

KOZHIKODE: The proposed International Hospitality Management Institute will help Kozhikode in its endeavor to emerge as a hub of higher education. The hospitality school will be the latest to join IIM, NIT and School of Mathematics here.

State Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan announced in New Delhi last week that the Centre has given the green signal for establishing the institute, first of its kind in Kerala. Tourism Department had submitted to the Union Tourism Ministry, a preliminary project report on the institute.

Department sources told this website's newspaper that a rough estimate shows the institute will require an investment of Rs 40 crore. The property owned by the defunct public sector Kerala Soaps and Oils Limited, Kozhikode, is under consideration for housing the institute.

Sources said the institute, which will require 5 acre at the initial stage, will be a joint venture with public-private participation. The government plans to rope in leading players in the tourism and hotel industry to ensure better industry-institute interaction, a key factor in any management education.

Sources said the institute will conduct high end courses in hospitality management. Presence of an IIM in Kozhikode will be another advantage for the institute.

“Though Kozhikode is not a major tourism hub in South India, we are confident of winning support from the industry and external faculty. An active industry participation will make training and placement of students more effective,” sources said.

Discussions with leading national and international hospitality players on investment and academic matters will begin only after the detailed project report, to be prepared by a consultant, is ready.

The government plans to retain 51 pc stake in the institute, which will be dedicated for running high-end programmes and academic activities, including consultancy. It will have courses in all branches of tourism and hospitality industry.

Models of similar institutes in India and abroad will be studied, before shaping the structure of the institute. National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Hyderabad, is a prominent institute in this sector.

Kerala plans IT park in Kozhikode

Thiruvananthapuram Feb. 1 The Kerala Government will set up an information technology (IT) park in Kozhikode.

State Chief Minister Mr V.S. Achuthanandan had recently announced the government's intention to establish such a facility. The proposed IT park is likely to be developed on the lines of Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram.

According to Mr K.R. Jyothilal, Director, Kerala State IT Mission and Special Secretary Department of Information Technology, Government of Kerala discussions have already been held with various industry stakeholders on the proposed technology park in Kozhikode. Several IT companies have expressed interest in starting operations at this facility, he added.

A few sites around Kozhikode have been identified and a final decision on the IT park's location is expected in the next few weeks, he added.

Meanwhile, the State Government is also considering a proposal to set up a technology park in Palakkad district in response to a demand from several large IT companies.

sarovaram project

KOZHIKODE: The long-awaited Sarovaram tourism project (till recently known as Swapna Nagari project) is ready for launch, said Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at a programme held here on Saturday to install office-bearers of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would lay the stone for the project on February 6, the Minister said. He said the project would be one of the several programmes the LDF Government intended to launch in the coming days to give a boost to development of tourism in North Kerala. He said Swapna Nagari (since renamed Sarovaram) project was delayed as the officials concerned repeatedly raised objections against its implementation.

The Minister was speaking at a function to install publisher N.E. Balakrishnan Marar as president and P.T.S. Unni as honorary secretary of CCCI.

Programmes aimed at the development of Wayanad as a major tourism destination were also in the pipeline. Wayanad would be developed as a major tourism centre like Idukki, he said.

He said home-stay accommodation facilities should be improved in Wayanad where there was a large turnout of foreign tourists. The Government had offered 15 per cent subsidy on investments in the tourism sector with a view to encouraging tourism development in north Kerala. In the rest of Kerala, it was only 10 per cent, he said at a function to install publisher N.E. Balakrishnan Marar as president and P.T.S. Unni as honorary secretary of CCCI.

The Minister also stated that the government would try to evolve a consensus to exempt the tourism sector from hartals.

Emphasising the LDF Government's commitment to retain the presence of the Government-owned Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) sector while encouraging private investments in the tourism sector, the Minister said a Kerala House would soon be constructed in Chennai .

The Minister also said planners should think big when it came to development. "We are only talking about doubling of rail track. We should be asking for development of four-lane railway tracks," he remarked.

The Minister's announcements on tourism development in North Kerala came in response to suggestions for development of the region placed before the Minister in a memorandum by CCCI at the function. Minister for Forests Benoy Viswom; A.Pradeep Kumar and M.K. Premnath, MLAs also spoke at the function.

Shortly after taking over as the CCCI president , Mr. Balakrishna Marar said he would try to improve facilities at Kozhikode Medical College and establish new premises for CCCI., besides seeking solutions to people's problems.

Among the demands that the CCCI has made in its memorandum to the Minister is for a separate Minister for commerce in the State to take special care of issues of the merchant community.

Tech27 launches Inspectron in India
KOZHIKODE: Tech27 Systems Ltd, a software solutions provider in Kozhikode, has launched its latest product, Inspectron, in India. Shreyas Koliyot, managing director, Tech 27, told The Hindu that Inspectron was being launched in Indian market after three years of successful implementation in the European energy industry.

Inspectron is designed to enable any industry to improve efficiency, productivity and cost-savings.

It is a powerful web-enabled inspection and reporting database system built with state-of-the-art technology software languages and programming protocols that can be customised to suit any specific situation or format.

The system incorporates the use of hand-held computers to allow paperless and instant reporting directly from the worksite through wireless technology. Aruna Sunderrajan, former Secretary, Information Technology, who is now Country Head for a UN project in Bangalore, lauded Tech27 for launching a product which she said was an event that always marked a milestone on the history of any IT enterprise.

"Indian IT industry has not developed many products. It has been doing body-shopping, generally speaking. Tech27 has launched a product. It is indeed a big achievement," Ms Aruna Sunderrajan, who piloted the State's Akshaya project and similar IT initiatives in Kerala as IT secretary to the Government, said at the launch function held at Taj Residency in Kozhikode.

Mr. Koliyot, a computer engineer from Aberdeen University in Scotland, said he got little support from his colleagues in the IT firm in UK where he was employed when he announced a proposal to set up business in Kozhikode.

But he had gone ahead with his plans since he was determined to prove that Kerala is the right place for IT industry. "Kerala produces sufficient trained manpower. It is the right place for an IT unit," says Mr. Koliyot.

A native of Kozhikode, Mr. Koliyot was doing only what senior members of his family had done in the past. Koliyot group, as his family business is known locally, had made its debut, setting up a grocery store on December 14, 1914 near YMCA on Kannur Road. Since then it has diversified into other business such as trading, manufacturing, plantation, retailing, construction.

Tech27 Systems, founded in 2002, has made a mark as a market leader in developing bespoke mobile and wireless application software.

The company's areas of expertise include mobile application development aimed PDA and Tablet PC, RFID applications; SAP development and integration; WiFi based asset tracking and advanced e-document management.

Tech 27 has started to diversify into product design, operational concept development and 3D-animation. Its expertise in the field of multimedia are in product design and development, virtual reality, character modelling and texturing, set modelling and texturing, special effects, 2D and 3D animation, engineering animation and architectural walk through.

Project reports on roads presented

KOZHIKODE: Mayor M. Bhaskaran has said that the City Corporation will take steps to get funds from the Union Government to improve city roads.

The Mayor was addressing a meeting where the Kozhikode City Roads Improvement Project prepared by the Public Works Department and another project prepared by the Centre for Integrated Rural and Urban Studies (CIRUS) were presented on Friday.

Sabu K. Philip, consultant, Kozhikode City Roads Improvement Project, presenting the project said that 13 roads and two flyovers were proposed under phase I and II of this project at a total cost of Rs.400 crore. Consultancy study for the projects was carried out by a New Delhi firm. The third phase would cover work on seven roads. The entire project would be submitted for funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The three roads under Phase I are the coastal road from West Hill Link (Butt Road) to Meenchanda, mini bypass from Meenchanda to West Hill, and the road from Mananchira to Vellimadukunnu. The flyovers are at Arayidathupalam and Eranhipalam.

The CIRUS report said that if the Corporation prepared a project for roads in the city, it could be submitted for Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns, which had a corpus fund of Rs.5000 crore.

The project report of the CIRUS, which did a study on widening of Palayam-Franscis Road as directed by the Calicut Development Authority, said the existing 12-metre road would be widened to 24 metres. The issue of 180 tenants and 85 owners of buildings and shops on both sides of the road have to be tackled.

Calicut & Kochi to host retail shows

Kochi, Sept 25: The Hyderabad-based business media firm, VIN Media, is organizing tradeshows and business sessions on technology adoption in Kochi and Calicut in November.
Being organised with an objective to showcase and educate small and medium retailers the advantages of technology adoption in streamlining retail business processes, cut costs and give better customer experience, the Retail Tech Shows are scheduled on November 15 and 16 in Calicut and November 24 and 25 in Kochi.
According to VIN Media, Not only that conventional retailing is declining, the small and medium retailers in Kerala, like their counterparts in other parts of the country, are also being challenged by large organised retailers setting up stores in all major cities and towns in the state. One of the proven survival strategies for small and medium retailers in this fiercely competitive retail business is adopting and using Information Technology to run their stores.
While big retailers in India have a strong IT backbone, Small and medium retailers are also realizing the importance IT and it advantages, feels Vinod Menon of VIN Media. IT is about enabling the retailer to serve his customers better and for customers, it's about getting faster, quality services and getting the fun out of shopping.
One of the favourable factors in adopting retail technology is availability of cost effective retail technology solutions developed by small technology companies in India. These companies have developed tailor retail solutions for the small and medium retailers. The commonly used retail technologies by retailer are point of sales machines & solutions, barcode solutions and retail software and related technologies.
For small and medium retailers to successfully adopt IT, it is essential that they investigate and understand IT and explore the right technology

KOZHIKODE, APRIL 11. A report on Road Development and Traffic Operation plan for Kozhikode city, prepared by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) in September 2004 and submitted to the City Corporation, has stressed that transportation and urban environment are linked with each other.

The study says that demand for transportation in Kozhikode has increased with urbanisation and increase in the number of motor vehicles plying on the roads. It also leads to traffic congestion on the roads, said N. Vijayakumar, Natpac team leader.

The resources for development at the disposal of the Corporation and other agencies are limited. So, in order to improve transportation facilities, compatibility should be maintained between the demand and supply of transport facilities within the town and environs.

Some of the improvement proposals include the shifting of existing bus stops to a minimum of 50 to 75 metres from the junction for smooth flow of traffic. The bus stops, which could be shifted are those at East Nadakkave on NH 212, MCC Bank on Kallayi Road, Pushpa Junction on Madhavan Nair Road, Chalappuram near the post office and Meenchanda on Bypass Road.

Setting up railing barriers and zebra crossings at Eranhipalam, East Nadakkave, MCC Bank, Pushpa junctions, guardrails at areas such as Malabar Christian College, Idiyankara HSS on Francis Road, West Nadakkave Government Girls High School are the other suggestions mentioned in the report.

Encroachments by roadside vendors at Palayam bus stand, English Church, I.G. Road, Bank Road-Mananchira footpath and Kallayi-Vattakinar Road should be avoided. The report stresses that the existing transportation facilities be utilised in an optimal manner.

A similar NATPAC study, `Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Planning exercise,' was conducted in for Kozhikode in 1980-81.

The objective is to formulate short-term measures for traffic improvement and long-term road development plan.

The average journey speed with delay on National Highway 17, Indira Gandhi Road, Beach Road and Ram Mohan Road was found to be above 35 km an hour. It was between 30/34 km on the National Highway 212, Karaparamba-Kakkodi Road and Court Road.

On the arterial roads such as M.M. Ali Road, Pavamani Road, Malabar Christian College Road, YMCA Cross Road, Rajaji Road and Cherooty Road the journey speed during the peak hour was less than 20 km an hour.

Traffic volume

The analysis of traffic volume showed that of the 91,726 vehicles, more than 36 per cent were two-wheelers followed by cars and jeeps (22.4 per cent). Goods vehicles including goods autos comprised 16 per cent

It was totally unfair that Calicut was left out from JNNURM. Hope this will be rectified.

RAPID URBANISATION has called for the urgent need for stringently imposing the provisions of parking rules in Kozhikode city.

Crunch

Just like any other metros, civic authorities here are also facing the challenge to solve the acute space crunch in the city. Property boom and increase in vehicular population have contributed to this aspect.

Corporation officials say that property builders and real estates have been asked to comply with parking rules during construction.

However, the vertical growth of the city within its jurisdiction of 82 square kilometres is compelling officials to be sterner in dealing with the offenders.

Mandatory provision

"Commercial establishments have been asked to adhere to the mandatory provision of creating parking spaces for customers," says an official at the Town Planning Department.

Earlier, commercial establishments did not bother much about providing parking space to customers. Spaces for off-street and on-street parking were then readily available. Now the situation is totally different, they say.

Ground floors

Usually apartments stick to the provisions so as to market their units even if these are constructed is in the heart of the city. Ground floors are usually converted into parking spaces for all the allottees, he says.

However, officials admit that one of the major problems is the narrow roads in the city. Vehicular population alone cannot be sole factor to the space crunch in recent times. But it has to be mentioned that the rate of growth of vehicles is 12 per cent to 15 per cent in a decade. On an average there are 70 to 80 motor vehicles for every 1,000 person.

Density

Interestingly, the population density in the inner city area is 5,280 persons per sq.km. while it is 2,486 persons per sq.km. in the outer fringes of the city, as per the figures of the 2001 Census.

Average traffic

As per a study conducted in the city, the average daily traffic flow was 50,000 vehicles per day at Mankavu Junction-Arayadathupalam section of Mini Bypass and 15,000 vehicles on Francis Road. Peak-hour traffic varied at inner and intermediate city road sections.

High volume

High-traffic volume is exerting pressure on the narrow urban roads causing frequent congestions and accidents. Annual daily traffic in the range of about 20,000 to 55,000 passenger car units was observed in the inner city, 32,000 to 50,000 in intermediate city roads and 5,000 to 15,000 on roads in the periphery of the city.

Major junctions on Mavoor Road, Rajaji Road, Pottamal, Chevayur, Mankavu, Meenchanda , Karaparamba and Eranhipalam are experiencing parking problems.

Major corridors

Palayam, the urban section of NH 17, Francis Road, Railway Station Road, Mananchira and Pavamani Road are major parking demand corridors in the central part of the city. Shopping complexes and wholesale markets have generated more demand for on-street parking for passengers and goods vehicle at the market areas. At the same time the non-availability of off-street parking at residential and commercial areas leads to a frequent traffic blocks.

Suggestions have now come up to improve the inter-city traffic road corridors and intra-city traffic corridors. Apart from construction new roads and improving existing ones, Kozhikode Corporation is also taking steps to establish new bus terminals at West Hill, Medical College and Vellimadukunnu.

Master plan

As per the new master plan of the city road overbridges have been proposed at Bhatt Road and Fourth Gate. Likewise projects have been envisaged for mass transport system, area development scheme at Stadium Junction, Satellite Township at Kunnamangalam, restructuring the Palayam subway to pedestrian subway-cum-shopping mall and greening the arterial corridors.

Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran says that multi-level parking has become a necessity in view of the increasing demand for parking spaces in the city. Promotion of off-street parking will help reduce the congestion. Private land owners will be encouraged to offer facilities for off-street parking.

Construction of multi-storeyed parking lots at Muthalakulam, Palayam, Mananchira, Mankavu and Arayadathupalam and re-routing the buses would help in making more spaces in the city.

Developers

But most essentially property developers have to abide by the rules in making their own parking facilities.

Housing boom has immensely contributed to urbanisation in a big way in Kozhikode city, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the urban population in the district. Long-term measures have to be adopted with commercial establishments mushrooming in residential areas.

A master plan for development

Steps have been initiated to gear up Kozhikode to assume the status of a metro. Biju Govind analyses the master plan drawn up by the civic authorities as part of the initiative.
EVER SINCE Kozhikode began to shed its tag of an overgrown town and looked forward to being a metropolis in North Kerala, the civic authorities have been confronted with the problem of inadequate space for infrastructure development of the city.

But now a master plan for the city, drawn up last month, gives a glimmer of hope to the authorities concerned to utilise space in a pragmatic way, rationalise land use, strengthen transportation systems and chalk out new infrastructure development methods for future generation.

Corporation officials say that the focus is on regional spatial strategy, local development framework and development control. This involves greater attention to improve spatial qualities, socio-economic aspects, environmental awareness and urban governance.

Transport system

Transportation has been given due emphasis in the master plan, which includes developing inter-city traffic road corridors, intra-city traffic corridors, constructing new city roads and bus terminals, road over bridges and junctions. Improvements have been proposed in the railways and waterways.

One of the proposals is strengthening and widening the Madhavan Nair Road from Pushpa Junction to Pokkunnu and further extension to Pantheerankavu on National Highway Bypass and constructing a coastal highway from Kozhikode to Kochi.

Ambitions

Constructing an East-West Axis Road from Vellayil to Kunnamangalam via Malabar Christian College Cross Road-Chevayur and Mayanad is another ambitious project for streamlining intra-city traffic corridors.

Bus terminals have been proposed at West Hill, Medical College and Vellimadukunnu in the master plan. Other road transport development projects envisaged are introducing mass transport system, restructuring existing subways, greening arterial corridors and re-routing bus services in the city.

Drainage

Completion of the Kozhikode Drainage Project has also been given importance with the rise in households in the city in the last several years.

This includes laying of pipeline for about 100 km, a treatment plant at Karimanappalam using suitable technology and setting up four major pumping stations.

Reconstructing existing drain on the sides of main roads in town, covering them with RCC slabs to serve as footpaths, constructing sewer-cum-storm water drains and lining the natural drainage canals with cement concrete have been proposed.

Water resources

Watershed management; rainwater harvesting and localised water supply schemes are other projects. However, officials stress on the need for maintaining and conserving water sources such as tanks, ponds and dug wells existing in various regions.

Only with the completion of the multi-crore Japan Bank for International Cooperation -aided drinking water project can Kozhikode city hope to solve the acute drinking water shortage, they say.

Power supply

Another aspect is improving the existing power situation in the city. Priority has been given to constructing a ring main system of 29 11-kV rings and sub rings with 64 feeders and a new sub-station at Vellayil with 200 distribution transformers. Modifying the 220-kV substation at Nallalam, enhancing the capacity of 110- kV Sub-station at Vydyuthi Bhavan and converting the 110-kV single circuit line from Chevayur to 110 kV Substation at West Hill to 110-kV double circuit line are new proposals in the master plan.

Regarding waste management, standalone treatment plants on the beach and sides of Canoly Canal have been proposed.

Volunteers

Utilising the services of the Kudumbasree volunteers in the door-to-door collection of garbage and operating the treatment plant at Njeliyanparamba to its full capacity have also been drawn up for making improvements in this category.

Another major proposal is implementation of a Shelter Upgradation Programme for 79 identified slum areas in four phases.

Shelter upgradation

Three slum areas will be improved in the first two years, 23 in the next five years, 30 in another five years and 23 in the last phase of the programme.

Projects on tapping the tourism potential of the city, improving urban governance through e- initiatives, preparing a contour map for sewerage system and flood control and defining and proclaiming green belts have also been included in the master plan for the development of Kozhikode.

multiplex arival in calicut
Sathyam Cinemas, which has two multiplexes in Chennai and was the first theatre in the country to deploy Hollywood-standard digital cinema, are also expanding. Sathyam will add 18 more screens (three multiplexes) across Chennai and Cochin with an investment of Rs 30 crore in 2008. The company is also scouting for four-five more sites in Chennai besides venturing into cities like Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Calicut.Albeit Kiran Reddy, managing director, Sathyam Cinemas, believes that “content will always have the upper hand”. He also believes that the synergies and savings are essentially local. For expansion across cities means setting up separate offices and replicating media costs. “Globally too, the best local theatre, like a restaurant, tends to have the highest collections and it doesn’t matter if it is part of a chain,” he says.

Hot favourite

In north Kerala, The National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) is a hot-favourite of companies coming down to Kerala for campus recruitment. The placement season of the NIT-C starts in July and will go on till November and may sometimes be extended by a couple of months.

The campus placement is conducted almost continuously at the Institute, points out S.S. Gokhale, Director of NIT-C. "This year the placement is going to be better than last time. It is premature to disclose the statistics of placement of this year at this stage," says T.V. Gopalan, professor and head of Training, Placement and Linkage Department of NIT-C.

High salaries

Last year, three NIT-C students hit the jackpot with the highest offer of Rs 5.5 lakhs made by Trilogy Limited, U.S., a multinational company (MNC). The salary offered on the campus was higher than the `highest' salary of Rs. 4.25 lakhs that was offered the previous year.

A couple of B.Tech. students accepted the second highest offer of Rs. 4 lakhs per annum. "The companies coming in were so many and the students so few that we were forced to refuse some companies," observes Dr. Gopalan.

Most of the companies were IT firms but 35 per cent were from the core sectors. Of 57 students in the Civil Engineering stream, 33 got placements last year. Four students of Civil Engineering and two from the Mechanical Department were absorbed by Larsen and Turbo ECC, with an annual salary package of Rs. 3 lakhs each. The average salary was Rs. 2.5 lakhs and the lowest was Rs. 1.8 lakhs.

IT Park: Steps on to identify landSaturday February 3 2007 12:15 IST
KOZHIKODE: The Revenue Department has suggested land at Valayanad (Mankavu) and Nellikkode villages in the city for establishing the proposed IT park.

State IT secretary K.R. Jyothilal told Express on Friday that these two proposals have been moved to the office of the Chief Minister the other day.

“We have also sought another stretch of land for better selection. government wants to acquire at least 25 acres of land in a single block for the park. A final decision on the location of the park will be taken after consultations with people’s representatives from the region,” he said.

Additional District Magistrate P. Balan, who is holding the charge of Kozhikode district collector, submitted the proposals to the IT Department on the day of collectors’ conference.

Considering the infrastructure shortcomings of Kozhikode, govt plans to house the park within the city or the city region. The KSIDC growth centres at Balussery and Panakkad (Malappuram), which are yet to find takers among investors, have also been suggested for the project.

“Distance of these places from Kozhikode may dampen investors. At the initial stage of IT development at Kozhikode, we have to groom facilities within or near the city. Hence, KSIDC-owned locations can be considered at a later phase.”

Jyothilal said several models have been suggested for developing the park. Some companies want to buy land and develop their own facility, while others, particularly MNCs, want plug-and-play facility.

Technopark model is under active consideration, as that would require the least gestation period. If the Kozhikode IT Park is planned on the Technopark platform, government can soon go ahead with further steps after the land acquisition.

Several companies operating in Technopark has sought premises in Kozhikode. The park will also benefit IT enterprises born in Kozhikode.

Jyothilal said connectivity with other IT hubs in South India will emerge as a deciding factor for Kozhikode.

Government urged to stabilise construction sector

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Builders Association (KBA) has said the building sector in the State is on the verge of collapse. The association said it would resort to agitations if the Government failed to change its policies and bail out the construction sector.

M.D. Jairaj, president, and Sani Francis, general secretary, said here on Saturday that the KBA would organise a dharna in front of the Kanayannur taluk office on Monday.

Making out a strong case for Government action, KBA said the construction sector provided direct employment to nearly 3.5 lakh workers and indirect employment to another 2.5 million. It also disbursed Rs.7 crore as daily wages. "The construction sector should be declared an industry so that it will be eligible for several concessions and benefits available to industries," said association spokespersons.

The KBA sought comprehensive master plans for each district within two years on the basis of the development needs for the next 50 years. An expert committee comprising architects, town planners and builders should draw up the plan. The KBA also said the plans for Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode should be finalised within six months considering the commercial importance of the cities.
