I had a rather nausseating experience at the water park last spring. Their willingness to deem the wave pool safe a couple hours later has kinda turned me off....

You mofo's want to join me for this Sunday's walk? It's supposed to be warm out, so you nancy boys might be able to stay outside for a few hours without complaining. My plan was to hit the southern edge of downtown, climb a few hills, explore Rossdale.

South of Jasper from 116th Street all the way east to 100St... Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. End at 1905, put all the pics on my laptop, I'll upload them on a pirated wi-fi connection while we warm up with some frosties, and then we can gloat.

This Starbucks at 11:30AM is the meet point. I'll be there from just before that time until about 11:45.... If you phone idar jewellers, it'll call forward to my cell phone, so you can catch up with us if you're late.

The last I heard the Mall of America is planning a massive expansion in ythe coming years. I think it will make it the largest in North America ... but I don't know if that expansion is approved or just proposed.

Like Edmonton, Minneapolis is a booming city. It would be one of only a few US cities I would consider moving to, only if I had to. As a major NWA hub, it is positioning itself to be amongst the top 10 US cities. It's no surprise to hear that they would consider expanding the MOA. If this is true, I can't wait to visit once the reno's are done :banana:

Phase II
Mall of America® is poised to further broaden and enhance its appeal to both domestic and international visitors as its developers are well into the process of defining a vision that will incorporate a combination of synergistic uses that may include:

* Premier hotels on site
* Office complex/business center with conference facilities
* Unique new retail offerings
* Popular destination restaurants
* Recreational/fitness/spa facilities
* Entertainment/cultural attractions
* Performing Arts Center
* Dinner Theater (1,200 seats)
* Water Park

While still in the planning stages, Mall of America Phase II concepts will display a lifestyle-oriented, progressive and innovative personality that will complement the existing shops and attractions at Mall of America. The Phase II mixed-use complex is zoned for up to 5.6 million square feet of new development and will be built on 42 acres of adjacent property to the north of Mall of America on the old site of the Met Center. A connection will also be constructed to link Phase I and Phase II.

The first element of the Phase II expansion occurred when IKEA® broke ground in the summer of 2003. Opening in 2004, the new 306,000 square foot IKEA is located on 15 acres of the Met Center lot across from Mall of America. The home furnishings retailer features approximately 75 different room settings, three model homes, a supervised children's play area, as well as a 320-seat IKEA Restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon platters.

Mall of America also announced four new tenants committed to occupy the current Mall and future development.

Cantina Corona - Level 4 East (E406) 13,000 square feet
De Mexico Para El Mundo ("From Mexico to the World") is excited to bring the first-ever restaurant branded by world-famous Corona, the number one selling beer in the world. Tastes, conversations and spirits come alive with this unique dining concept that pairs exotic Mexican food with specialty beers. Scheduled to open in early 2007.

AEG - Phase II
6,000-seat performing arts auditorium for music and dance performances.

Kimpton Hotel - Attached to the south area of Mall of America, off Killebrew Drive
A luxury boutique hotel featuring more than 200 rooms; construction will begin in 2007 and completion is expected in 2008.

Bass Pro - Phase II
One of the nation's leading outdoor recreational retailers will lease approximately 300,000 square feet and function as an anchor in Phase II.

They are approved by the City, and thats about as far as it has gone. 555 doesn't have any of there own money, and I doubt anyone wants to lend them some.

Well I hope something gets done with that mall. I went as a child and was pretty fascinated with it, but as an adult, it is sooo dingy and dated. It makes you wonder if 555 is pocketing all the profits and not turning any of it back into signifcant mall improvements. If 555 isn't willing to spend the money or doesn't even have it, they should sell it to someone who can bring WEM into the 21st century!

I like the idea of a parkade just for people who carpool. If you dedicated a parkade just for cars with 3 or more people, it would be good incentive for carpooling.

A carpooling lane would be nice, but I don't know if it would work in Calgary. Carpooling lanes work great for freeways that don't have many entrances/exits

There already is a HOV lane on Centre street during rush hour, but your right, they don't work that well with lots of exits on and off. Something like along Memorial could be easier to work, such as say that the 3rd lane thats active during the lane reversals is HOV only. Or further to the east, turn the inner most lane into a HOV lane (the outer lanes tend to be congested up with traffic due to Deerfoot exit, but the inner tends to flow decent)

You don't pop into WEM for a quick shopping item. You visit for a week or so.

Well, I get bored after a day or two, but the place has always seemed to me something of an indoor Vegas. It's just too bad that they seem to be letting all of the non-shopping attractions slide. Well, the submarines, anyway - kitchiest Canadian tourist attraction, bar none!

I think the Canadian Navy was tired of getting ripped off from the Brits with used crappy subs and heard about the WEM having a pair of subs that worked and bought them for service.

How to build a four story walk up in an urban environment. Not perfect, but at least the developer has not used vinyl siding. See a few pictures up for the counter example.

What is the reason then? I remember asking the representive for it at Dream BIG, but I forgot what his exact reasoning was... Wasn't it something to do with parking? I'm sure that lawyers office refusing to move had to have some sort of consideration.

well site area would have been increased, but marginally and they could go deeper and add another level or 2, but at a high cost yes. I believe it came down to cost, $/sfqt for residential. But i could be wrong as i dont have details.

The WEM sub fleet is still in the lake in the mall, you just cant ride them anymore - they are apparently looking at something else to put in there.

Maybe the AB should buy that nuclear sub for Sylvan Lake, we could have a whole fleet!

I don't hit Nexopia up to talk to girls - I use the forums mostly to talk to friends since I can't stand using MSN to chat. I also don't use the official forums for the aforementioned reasons - just simply too run amok with adolescence - thus just stick with user forums.

I heard that The Source is closing all its stores. True or false? Would be nice to see full Circuit City stores up in Canada!

Circuit City and The Source share nothing but the parent company.

The Source, or Radio Shack for those of us over 14, basically sells cellphones and a bunch of over-priced useless tech gadgets.

Circuit City is just another Future Shop/Best Buy. Maybe the FS/BB parent will buy a Canadian franchise, and we can have *3* electronics stores with virtually identical product at virtually identical prices, all located right next to each other in each big box power centre. :yuck:

Circuit City Restructures; 62 The Source Stores to Close in Canada

Circuit City Stores, Inc. has announced a major restrcuture that will see the closing of seven domestic superstores, a distribution centre in Lousiville, KY, and 62 The Source by Circuit City stores in Canada.

The retailer has also announced changes to its executive management structure: David L. Matthews will lead the merchandising, marketing, services, and supply chain teams; while all retail channels, including all domestic and international retail stores and Circuit City Direct, will report to George D. Clark, Jr., Executive Vice President, Multi-Channel Sales. Douglas T. Moore, Executive Vice Preisdent and Chief Merchandising Officer, has left the company.

Circuit City says the changes are a result of the “intensified gross margin pressures” experienced with flat-panels TVs in the third quarter. “The steps we are taking today represent the initial efforts toward getting our cost structure more in line with today’s marketplace,” said Philip J. Schoonover, Chairman, President, and CEO of Circuit City Stores, Inc.

All seven U.S. stores, which have been deemed low-volume, low cash flow older format stores, or cash flow negative locations, are scheduled to close by the end of February. The Louisville, KY distribution centre scheduled for closure is currently used store fixtures and signage.

In Canada, 62 under-performing The Source by Circuit City stores will close, eliminating one region and four districts, and resulting in the loss of approximately 70 positions at the store support centre and field management.

Circuit City expects the restructuring to cost anywhere from US$85 million to US$105 million, including US$30 million for store closings both in Canad and the U.S.; US$40 to US$60 million related to goodwill impairment; and approximately US$15 million in relation to other restructing activities. All expenses will be incurred in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2007.

“I believe that world-class multi-channel retailers need to offer a seamless experience to their customers,” stated Clark. “As such, we have taken steps to fundamentally re-align our business, [and] we believe these actions will help our associates to offer the seamless experience that our customers desire.”

So, how would WestEd compare against other malls in Canada... say Eaton Centre in TO...

http://www.lexpert.ca/deal.php?id=605

The Toronto Eaton Centre portion of the transaction closed on December 15, 2000 and the balance of the transaction closed on February 28, 2001. The aggregate purchase price for the transaction was $1.28 billion and accordingly constituted the largest Canadian real estate transaction of 2000/2001.

And it actually looks and works better then it did when it first opened. Cadillac Fairview has gone out of there way to help bring back that section of Yonge by opening up the east side at street level and contributing to Dundas Square. Looks nothing like a mall from the outside now.

I was just at the WEM website...there is a note explaining why the Christmas decorations are still up.

http://www.westedmontonmall.com/hours/events.asp#10602

Apparently they are working on a 'deal' that requires the decorations to stay put, a deal that will benefit our province as a whole. Anyone have any idea what it could be? I would tend to explain it away by blaming bungling ineffective management. Take down the f@cking decorations, its March.

Perhaps there is a movie or TV show that is going to be taping a scene(s) using a Christmas background. That would make sense of this "secretive deal".

Things like this just make me crazy. The city developed a plan to fix this street and make it a true Capital Boulevard about a year or two ago and here is it still sitting there looking like shit. I thought they were going to widen the sidewalks, put in some trees and build a fountain on the median. I don't know if the plan has been srcapped or just forgotten about, but why on earth does the city bother making development plans and then fail to fund them?

Although this condo complex looks plain from the outside, the inside is absoultely the most unique setup I've ever seen. Two of my good friends live here, and their condos have the best floor plans - and they face into a gorgeous indoor courtyard. Very cool.

It was designed by an Italian, and the building is so very nice... to think, these sold for 200,000 2 years ago - I'll bet you they are over 375,000 now - easily... and I was THIS close to buying one. Damn.

If you ever get the chance, go check 'em out. We need more of these in the city.

If I recall, I think the city was planning to "force" the property owners along the street to foot the bill. You can't imagine what a can of worms that would create, as certain leases permit the recovery of costs like this from tenants. Both the building owners and tenants would likely tell the city to go pound sand (or dump it all over the streets, it would seem).

True man, i want to the infamous Square One in Mississauga and there was one Km line to get off the highway exit that leads to the mall. X-mas shopping in the last weekend is a mission impossibile. It takes more time parking then actually shopping.

About strip malls.... in my city the local mall is nothing special and then a massive power centre opened. The mall almost died for a few months, then they just added a few stores, replaced the tiles, brought in Best Buy and now its busier then ever.

The Power centre is usless and now it nowhere as busy as it onced opened.

Sigh...

If you must know... my spelling of W1nn1p3g is in deference to a certain 'peg forumer who steadfastly refuses to crack the binding on his dictionary, and is too lazy to use the spell-check feature that some hard-working software designer added to this forum. WEM proudly boasts on it's website that they have the "world's largest parking lot" (in my mind, not something to be proud of).....maybe better would be the "world's nicest LRT station" :tup:

Anyways, it says WEM has over 20,000 parking stalls...and to think that it's still impossible to find parking there anytime before or after xmas, and sometimes even on long weekends. Its just a zoo there.....a very unmodern, run down zoo, to be precise...

Sheesh. I've lived in both Winnipeg and Edmonton for periods of my life and I find a lot of similarities between the two. I never think of either negatively and when you walk some places in Edmonton you can definitely get a Winnipeg feel. Monkeyman's super-cool extra cold and snowy outings really solidify the comparison for me. End of story. It's not negative, it's not positive. If you think it's negative then you're dissing Winnipeg and maybe we should bring biguc and the gang over for some gentle persuasion. :)

I wonder what sort of low budget waste of time movie works a deal with the mall to leave up its Christmas decorations for months...certainly not one with a budget to speak of. Movie producers like to control everything...not just conveniently use whats there. Maybe its another ABC Family blockbuster hit, in which WEM poses as "Galleria USA". Wow, what a boon to the Alberta economy.
