That's cladding 3.0, it looks like they just took it off an alien spaceship. :D

The quality looks beyond anything we've seen before, and the addition of the stainless steel is a nice touch. They just made all towers of the same height without similar trim lose their "new car" smell. But that's how design works, each decade brings something new to the table.

Do you mean where the angled steel beams will meet up with the 1st vertical steel beams? If so I read it was floor 52. Next week when they put up the scaffolding for 43,44 they will pass 500' taller then Vessy.

Port provides update to WTC Committee

BY Aline Reynolds
October 6 - 12, 2010

One W.T.C. is now 40 stories high, rising at a continued construction rate of about one floor per week.

“The building will be 90 stories high by the 10-year anniversary of 9/11,” Ward said.

Conde Nast’s show of interest in leasing office space in one W.T.C. is a “game-changer for Downtown,” Ward said. “The relationship with that type of employee would have with Downtown… I think will be really dramatic.”

The large-scale media company would also nurture the area’s housing sector, he said, since it caters to a primarily urban work force.

Is that a mock-up or the final product? Nonetheless I have goosebumps.:banaride:

I actually hope it's not a mockup but the real thing. There's a very typical situation that happens where a company will put out a mockup and then the actual product will come out looking very different.

What I see, I really hope will end up on the building. Look at those window frames, nice thin clean edges!

World Trade Center Redevelopment
Sneak Preview of the World Trade Center's New Face

The steel has risen up to the 42nd floor of 1 World Trade Center, which means it's time for our future tallest tower to start putting on its face! The glass and metal facade is en route from Portland, Oregon, and Owaponna, Minnesota, and should start going up on the building next month. The Port Authority released the above photos of a huge piece of corner facade that will cover a corner between floors 20-24. Cool, right? See more on the WTC Progress site. Need a reminder about what the building formerly known as the Freedom Tower will look like when finished? Here's a facade refresher.

One World Trade Center Prepares to Shine
The glass and steel facade of One World Trade Center will begin to go up next month.

The shining exterior of One World Trade Center will soon be visible for miles around.

The gleaming stainless-steel and glass panels will begin to rise next month to cover the skyscraper, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the Port Authority said.

The first batch of facade materials, including pieces for the 20th through 24th floors, is already on its way to lower Manhattan. The glass is coming from the manufacturer Viracon of Owaponna, Minn., and the steel pieces are traveling from the main curtain wall contractor, Benson Industries of Portland, Ore., the Port Authority said.

David M. Childs' design for the 1,776-foot tower — which will be the tallest in the city when completed — features eight tall triangles of glass and steel, which grow alternately narrower and wider as they approach the building's peak. Halfway up the tower, the facets of the facade will form a perfect octogon.

"Its overall effect is that of a crystalline form that captures an ever‐evolving display of refracted light," said Childs' firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, in a statement.

"As the sun moves through the sky or we move around the tower, the surfaces appear like a kaleidoscope, and will change throughout the day as light and weather conditions change."

The first 20 stories of the tower, comprising the lobby and mechanical space, will have a more porous, sparkling facade, made of prismatic glass and an aluminum screen.

Steel for tower has reached the 42nd floor and is rising at a rate of one story per week.

The $3.2 billion building is scheduled to open in 2013.

Yeah....hasn't that been what we've been talking about all along now? I don't see that many comparisons between the glass. I definitely don't think 1WTC's glass is going to be that blue or wavy, and the panels are also larger. I think it's going to look rather different. But I guess what do I know?

If the cladding is shipping out it has to be going up sooner rather than later.

That's the way it's been planned from the beginning, when Larry Silverstein was still in charge of developing the building and David Childs was designing it. 7 WTC is your best example at the site because its the only one built.

Ward began with a progress report on his agency’s projects. At 1 WTC, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the steel frame is at the 40th floor -- nearly up to half of it’s total height of 104 stories. Ward said that crews from Tishman Construction are erecting about one floor per week, and that the iconic tower should be up to the 90th floor -- if not topped out -- by the 2011 anniversary of 9/11.

Cladding of 1 WTC’s lower floors is planned to begin by late next month, and will rise with the building as new stories are built. Already the tower’s cranes can be seen on the downtown skyline, with the structure itself likely to be visible from around the region in early 2011.

They took down the construction hoist on the south side because the main ones on the east and west sides are fully operational now.

Anything that does not need to be there is going to come down in the next few weeks to make way for curtain wall installation.

Expanding thoughts on the glass for the curtain wall.

The glass is "super clear" but any super smooth surface, like glass, well act like a mirror at anything other than 90 degrees of refraction. ( I forgot much of my HS physics, but the reflection is exponential to the angle of reflection, or something like that.)

Unless it is back lit or you are viewing it at zero degrees of reflection the glass of the curtain wall well mirror, or reflect, the light that hits it.

Thanks for all the great updates! I'm going to be in NYC in late Sept 2011; this will be my first time to NYC and i'm really looking fwd to visiting the new World Trade Center especially. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that 1WTC will be topped out (or very close) by that time.

:previous: Art and information, cool shot.

Unless it is back lit or you are viewing it at zero degrees of reflection the glass of the curtain wall well mirror, or reflect, the light that hits it.

...the wall WILL act as a mirror...

:previous: Correct. (My post didn't make that perfectly clear. (Pun intended))

There is no mirror coating added to the glass.

You are so lucky! I really look forward to visiting NYC as well one of these days. I was hoping to do so next year as well, or a little after 2012. I hope to be there when 1WTC is topped and the transportation hub is finished. That thing looks so amazing!

1 World Trade Center Hardhat Tour: Concrete, Steel, and Views

Monday, October 11, 2010, by Joey Arak

As part of Open House New York weekend, we were lucky enough to snag a spot on one of the hardhat tours of 1 World Trade Center, what will one day be North America's tallest and most well-read skyscraper.

Steel has now risen to the 42nd floor of the tower, and the sturdy skeleton will continue to inch upward until the first month of 2012. That slow ascent won't stop the first chunks of glassy curtain wall from being installed, a process that will begin next month.

I don't think that will happen until early next year, at around the same time it will top Chase Manhattan Bank, leaving only a handful of skyscrapers Downtown to be conquered on its quest to skyline's tallest.

Every 2 weeks the building grows 2 floors or 26'8". 54' per month. I believe that will increase when the floors get smaller.

A quick question that I haven't seen asked on this forum yet...

The steel work is progressing at about 1 floor per week which I'm guessing pretty much fully utilises the cranes. Does the additional work required to support the cladding activities not impact the schedule for steel work?

(I'm assuming the cranes are needed to raise the cladidng).

I believe they can bring the panels up in the elevator and install them from the inside, using a small crane positioned one floor above.

I still do not understand what's the aim of the crane at the north west corner of the tower...

It's used by the concrete contractor to bring up rebar and other materials for the building's core. This allows the two main tower cranes to focus on erecting the building's steel superstructure.

Tallest Building Title May Return to New York

The Willis Tower: Tallest in America, for now...

Maura Webber Sadovi reports:
October 13, 2010

Chicago may soon lose bragging rights for being home to the country’s tallest building.

That distinction belongs to Chicago’s Willis Tower, which is 1,450 feet high. But that is soon to be eclipsed by the 1,776-foot One World Trade Center in New York that is now under construction, according to Marshall Gerometta, database editor for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Chicago.

Chicago’s hope has been tied to plans for Chicago Spire, a 2,000-foot tower designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava slated to overlook Lake Michigan. But financial problems have stalled construction since 2008 on the proposed luxury residential building.

Most recently, Anglo Irish Bank Corp. moved to foreclose on a defaulted mortgage valued at about $77 million including interest and other unpaid charges held by the developer, Shelbourne Development, according to a recent filing in Circuit Court of Cook County, Ill. Lorig Construction Co. of Des Plaines, Ill. earlier filed suit seeking about $512,386 for what it alleged was unpaid work on the project.

The country’s tallest building title “would go back to New York,” if the Spire doesn’t go forward and the New York building is completed as planned, said Mr. Gerometta, who is keeping an eye on the Spire’s progress. An attorney for the Spire’s developer said the project isn’t dead and Shelbourne still is seeking other sources of financing.

Maura Webber Sadovi reports:

Why leave any title of USA's tallest to chance? Do what I said they should have done with 1 WTC's design 5 years ago! Make it 1,776 feet tall, with a spire bringing it up to the year it's completed (2,012). That way you beat the Spire regardless if it's built.

They should still change the tower to these heights, IMO. I mean, it's not like they already laid the foundation or finalized designs. :haha:

I thought Americas supertall towers were and are built because of "office demand" There sometimes is not enough land or land is to expensive as with New York so they build up. I see alot of 1500'-2500' projects in countries that seem to be showing off how tall they can build. What percent of those towers are built because there is the demand for a 2000 foot tall towers space! How many will be 1/2 full or less in 5 or 10 years from now?

Look at the Sears...I mean, Willis Tower. That's what most 2,000 foot towers will probably look like in the future, a future half or more empty. These kind of towers are huge and become outdated quickly. Furthermore your right, the space just isn't needed. We can look at our own cities and see the office vacancies already, imagine trying to get rid of a 2,000 foot tower. 1WTC will be successful being in the financial capital of the world, just as the Twins were before. But beyond that who really knows.

I'm sure everyone on this forum knows this, but the Empire State Building was known as the "Empty State Building" throughout the 1930's because it was built at the beginning of the Great Depression and remained largely empty after it was built. The same fate may or may not be true for so many supertalls being built throughout the world today. Be it bragging rights or supply filling demand... whatever. I appreciate great architecture at whatever size the building is. If it's a three-story building in Idaho or a 125 story building in Dubai, as long as the architecture is nice and the building makes sense in its location, I'm all for it.

One World Trade Center is being built (as is the entire WTC complex) in a location where demand will make sure the buildings are filled. As many of you will agree, I can't wait to see it fill the void left by the loss of the original World Trade Center (and the lives of all those who were lost that day).

Now back to the subject of the building itself...

though that undermines architectures purpose, sure a building may be beautiful though if its not occupied then its senseless. it does not serve its purpose and as true as it may be that the ESB was unoccupied and largely useless it still wasn't 2000 feet as all theses speculatory towers are today. nobody needs a tower that tall,in the long run they will just become burdens on the economy. until it becomes practical im against it being done...
