I love how 1WTC and the ESB line up north to south. They kind of act as a link between downtown and midtown.

In the last Carlos photo you can see the cladding missing a few rows because of the side crane mounts. Can I ask a silly Q. What is the purpose of the side mounted crane on this building? I've seen the 2 top cranes hoist steel from the ground...so what does this one do??? Thank you. And thanks to everyone with these great photos.

Dumb Question but do they judge the tower height from the basement levels, where the foundations are. Or, ground level, like lobby level?

Sea level. Sea level is 0 feet. Everything up would count.

For architects, engineers and anyone involved in the construction project, PANYNJ datum (300' below mean high tide); for the rest of the world, main lobby floor (11'2" above mean high tide). Oh, forgot it, and for the CTBUH people, north entrance (7' 10" above mean high tide)

It's pretty simple yet made so complicated. A building in Denver (mile high city) for example wouldn't be measuerd from (the actual) sea level, or that'd make it the tallest in the world. So buildings are mainly measured from the lobby up to the spire (not antenna). Sea level is just an expression (or 'variable') used to represent the number 0.

And don't forget, a "spire" can be a little pole that has nothing to do with the building and is super skinny, has no purpose and looks thrown on as an afterthought. For instance, you could put a giant spire on a 50 story building and it would be the nations new tallest building. Yay! That's why the well reasoned use roof height. :whip:

The real answer to your question is buildings are judged from the lowest significant open air pedestrian entrance. In the case of 1WTC, this is the lobby entrance.

I agree spires are somewhat cheap, but I think the one on this building works well, and it's not skinny, but rather about as wide as my house haha. It's a metal structure nearly the size of the washington monument sitting on top a 1380 foot building, pretty cool I think

Whwere's the WTC1 roof for that matter? The thread title and most people say roof, but they're referring to the parapet. The roof is something like 32' below the top of the walls.

Yeah? Where is Burj Khalifa's roof? The Chrysler building? BofA?

If you would look at the Skyscraper pages diagram, these are all clearly stated. Chrysler's roof is at 282 m, the WTC's is 417 m. Burj Khalifa is really the only one that is a little hard to pinpoint (but only because we really don't know that much about it, hell, we don't really even know the actual height last I heard) There last area that looks like real building seems to be around 775 m. People act like it is so hard to find roof height, when pretty much ever building on this website has a listed roof height AND spire height. And none of the pro spire people will answer my question. If 1WTC was 50 m lower at its roof height, but had a ridiculous spire that still made it taller than Sears, would you call that the tallest building in the USA? What if its roof line was 100 m lower? Counting spires just leads to cheating with spires. And this is from a guy who is a big fan of spires. I think 1WTC's spire is going to be fantastic, especially when lit at night.

Oh, and I am not sure which BofA building you are talking about, since there is pretty much one in every city. So I am going to guess the one in NYC. It's roof height is 287.9 m.

Well, last night was the first very cold night we had since the water started to flow in the Footprints of the North & South Towers reflecting pools. I do belive that is ice in both of the reflecting pools. I thought that they were going to put something in the water to keep it from freezing. I guess it won't freeze all the way & compleatly solid cause of the flowing water. Here is a pic I saw from one of the webcams this morning. (I actully did a video cause I don't know how to put pictures on here). -Greg (IntoTheLens827).

That is is real attractive. Either they didn't have the heating systems ready, or they miscalculated big time. I mean that is ugly as all get out.

Looks like a bunch of scum floating around in the pools.

Maybe it would be simpler just to turn them off for a few months. Either that or they need to fix it.

WT1 is growing fast!!!! Can you imagine what it'll look like in April 2012?!??

I thought they heated that water if it got below 59-61F? I guess they learn as they go with this new massive feat of engineering... no one can predict how two massive fountains will react to temps and winds...

They need to raise the temp to probably 84F because as it flows out the top, and air hits it, it loses all its heat falling.. increase the temp to overpower the air sheering loss.

Amazing to see though.. they have workers down on the south tower footprint breaking the ice up.

That Ice can have a really REALY bad effect on the tiles and the weight compression.. They'll get it fixed. just trial and error, as these are MASSIVE.
Many people just don't comprehend how large those footprints are. And a few people that come to NYC and went in, and saw for the first time, just how large the pools are, begin crying.. because then it hits them how large the towers were.. :(

Happy Holidays to all our members here, our Iron workers and other builders at WTC site!! You are our foundation.

Home in Ringwood, NJ from Wyoming for Christmas break and went on a hike I love. I might have ruined my ankle on a boulder, but the views were worth it. Ringwood's 25-30 miles from the city. That's the Wanaque Reservoir in the foreground.

PS: The 2-mile (and very steep) round trip trail begins at the Weis Ecology Center in Ringwood and the lookout is called Wyanokie High Point, if anybody wants to go on a nice hike sometime.

:whip:

WOAH! What a brilliant point!

How come this has never come up for discussion before???

Home in Ringwood, NJ from Wyoming for Christmas break and went on a hike I love. I might have ruined my ankle on a boulder, but the views were worth it. Ringwood's 25-30 miles from the city. That's the Wanaque Reservoir in the foreground.

And people say Jersey is ugly. Quite beautiful if I say so myself.

PS: The 2-mile (and very steep) round trip trail begins at the Weis Ecology Center in Ringwood and the lookout is called Wyanokie High Point, if anybody wants to go on a nice hike sometime.

omg! In the 3rd picture I can see Route 10 , like the Novartis Building in the right corner..I live really close to their but it's amazing how the city isn't visible from ground level at that point but from high up, it's like right there. :)

Yes, I actully have that same page with the webcam on it save to my Favorate. I love seeing the live cam. That's how I get on here. I go to the page & that's the first one I see, & then I go to thhe last page to see what the new updates are. I remember the first time I saw that webcam, I fell in love with it. Everyday since then, I check it out to see the view & what's going on down at the site. Thanks for posting that a long time ago! :-)

They aren't on strike...they got their weekly pay around 7:30 Friday morning.
It's been too windy for the cranes - they can't use the cranes in 30+ mph winds.

It's been a couple of weeks since the glass passed 7 WTC, maybe you're just not that observant. I don't think the cladding has been going up at an alarming speed, it's pretty normal I think.

Topped out meaning to the roof I presume? How long actually until the spire is complete? Will this be an arduous task or will it go pretty fast? Also please, is there an update on the base? Have they decided what it will be built out of and when it will be started? Thanks

You are not the wrong, I noticed the same thing. The glass was stalled around the height of 7 WTC for a good week or 2 and then all of a sudden things picked up...seems like they are adding a floor or so every 2-3 days. Of course this will slow down as they are catching up faster than the steel rises.

The spire itself is supposed to take about six months to complete, according to the Port Authority.

Oh and to answer about the podium glass the port authority said that "installation of the podiium glass will start in 2012 to allow for construction activities and deliveries to proceed in this area".
Glass has risen to the 63rd floor, and the concrete base has reached the 82 floor

The base will be worked on during 2013. It would be done before the opening of the building. The base would look a lot like the base of the Twin Towers just without the tridents.
