Oh wow, look at the glass go! I wonder what floor that is at now - it looks like there's at least a 20 floor gap between the cladding and the top (so far) of 1 WTC... Plus 7 WTC is 52 stories high and it looks like 1 WTC's cladding is 10 stories higher than 7 WTC now...

Based on what I see on wtc.com, I'm guessing this puts the cladding as being at the 72nd floor now? Is that even right? Seems about right for the amount of floors that haven't been cladded yet.

Epic. This is one of the views that will make the new WTC look similar to the original in the skyline. Speaking of skyline, Lower Manhattan seems as though it may rival its neighbor a few miles north in the future.

Maybe it's just me, but I like this tower. I like the simplicity of it and sleekness of it. I don't find it overscaled either. Towers of this height usually are 'bigger' buildings...this one is not as overscaled as the old WTC. Just my two cents.

One World Trade Center is poised to become the tallest building in New York City within the next couple of days, officials said today.

Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said contruction is proceding so rapidly it could surpass the Empire State Building's height as early as Monday, weather permitting.

"One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in Manhattan, eclipsing the Empire State Building," said Foye at a Crain's Breakfast forum this morning in Midtown.

When finished, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Construction started six years ago.

Foye said 55 percent of the building is leased.

89 Pieces of steel erected today. If weather cooperates keep your eye on tower next Monday for steel passing ESB, yes it is a media frenzy and we are getting ready for it with all sorts requests for power drops etc. But we lost this past Sunday, Monday & Tuesday pretty much due to weather issues, the long range forecast looks good at moment.

The best part about the cladding installation now is it has at least 5 more floors to go before it hits any netting. Hopefully those 5 floors will be done in about 3-4 weeks. I remember it took them about 1 week to do a floor. Now it seems they can knock out about 3 floors in 2 weeks.

Everyone has been eagerly awaiting the topping out of 1 World Trade Center. While that milestone is still a few weeks or months away, as early as next week, the SOM-designed, Port Authority-built tower will surpass the Empire State Building as the tallest in the city.

In honor of that occasion, Earthcam, which has been monitoring the site with great fervor, put together a timelapse of the tower’s rise.

Nah, it doesn't matter. Most kids are going to take filed trips there anyways. I believe 1 WTC should be the tallest in May 1,just to prove ol' Bin Laden never stopped American determination to come back. A friend of mine just told me that the Space Shuttle Enterprise (riding piggyback on a modified 747), will fly over the NYC metro area somewhere between 10am - 12 noon on the way to JFK. It's flight path is believed to be north up the Hudson, a U-turn around the Tappan Zee Bridge, south down the Hudson & arriving at JFK.

Does anyone think that they might be able to capture a shot of 1WTC w/ the SS in the same shot ?? That would be one seriously cool pic.

Wow!! They moved super-fast! Since they started up on glass again, I've noticed they usually get 2/3 of one side cladded one day, finish the other 1/3 the next day and then start on the other side. Color me impressed!

Taking advantage of its 1,776-foot height, including a 408-foot antenna, the main tower at the new World Trade Center site will be topped by a state-of-the-art radio and television broadcast facility expected to generate $10 million a year, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said yesterday.

While the facility is technologically capable of sending signals farther than existing transmitters — deeper into South Jersey or Pennsylvania, for example — Barowitz said broadcast coverage areas are strictly regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, and cannot be expanded simply by employing a stronger antenna.

Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye said officials would try to take advantage of the expiration of several broadcast contracts at about the time the new facility comes online, by 2014. He did not say which broadcasters the new facility would target.

I am not sure, I saw the panes being offloaded on Earthcam, and couldn't zoom in to get a better look.

From what I could see though, the panes looked to be about the same size as what's depicted in the renderings for the base.
