Somewhat off-topic, but as I was looking at the EarthCam pointed at the base of 1WTC, I noticed that the Winter Garden entrance facing the WTC is boarded up with what appears to by plywood.

A few questions: Has is been like that since it was restored after the 9/11 attacks, or is this a recent change in preparation to re-install some sort of bridge? And if so, what exactly are they going to put in?

It has, but they are building a mall underneath the World Financial Center and that is why it is boarded up. Once it's done the people that own the World Financial Center hopes it can rival the mall in the World Trade Center.

Any news on that horrible antenna they want to use now? Been reading around. Haven't come upon any news articles since that announcement a couple months back. Really bugs me with this change. Either don't add an antenna or figure a way to enclose it somehow like the original idea. I see spheres and other objects on tall buildings around the world. I find it hard to believe we can't figure a way to make it work on WTC 1..

That's what the PA gets for hiring Durst as their tenant supervisor. How they managed to throw numbers into changing the design is beyond me, but until something else comes up then we're just gonna have to deal with the bare mast. If the randome costs 20 million to maintain then how much would it cost to maintain this unprotected antenna from the elements? Rust is an example.

It has, but they are building a mall underneath the World Financial Center and that is why it is boarded up. Once it's done the people that own the World Financial Center hopes it can rival the mall in the World Trade Center.

The WFC was never trying to compete with the WTC; they were only upgrading some of the complex's features so that it will maintain the uniformity of the site, most likely since underground retail will stretch all the way from Fulton Sreet. They actually boarded up the entrance to remove glass and other features so that they can construct the headhouse for the Route 9A underpass. The plywood acts as an air conditioning barrier.

Just a guess, but those beams might be for distributing the load from the mast guys. It's not like you can just screw eyebolts into the roof for those suckers.

That's perimeter steel. Core steel would be thinner, and the mast would be nowhere near appearing until the concrete contractor has reached roof height (Zen's old diagrams shows that there is a platform made out of concrete at the very top of the core that the mast sits upon).

The antenna won't be a problem to maintain. It's basically identical to 4 Times Square's antenna.

All they're doing at the WFC is adding the Brookfield Heart of Glass where the old WTC access bridge was. The new glass structure will basically serve as an entrance to the tunnel that will go underneath West St. and connect to the WTC complex.

As far as adding more retail outlets at the WFC, there are only plans to strip the facades of Three WFC's mezzanine levels along West St. and put glass walls up to promote retail exposure.

No They Have had a jump, this week especially. The columns this week are almost 40'! These columns bring the tower to the top most floor, then the parapet will be installed along with the spire after. So this is a good week for the tower.

They did have a small jump last month - while I was in NYC, in fact. The very last afternoon I was there (6/18), I was at the 9/11 Memorial and actually caught the crane hoisting a big beam to the top. :)

Hello all! First time post on this site, but I follow it as i'm a huge fan of architecture.

Been following the WTC progress closely. I'm sad to see WTC2 not being built yet, as it was my favorite.

Overall I wish this project would have rivaled the stuff being built in Asia, but i'm glad New York is still competing with projects like this. I hope to make my first visit there when most of these supertalls are built. I've already been to most major cities with great skylines (Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, LA, etc).

New York is sort of the final frontier so to speak....

:previous: It has taken more than ten years but I guess it's safe to say that here on out, 1 WTC is now at the level of its predecessors.

I don't believe it's at the final height yet.
From the graphic above, it appears that the corners have not reached the top.

I love that joe woolhead pic that otie posted where the steal beams are converging, it's really start to feel like it's coming to an end. I'm sure many people thought this would never happen.

It's been a hell of a jouney for 1 WTC and while I'm very happy to see it finally nearing completion, but it's also a little sad that the skeleton will be hidden from view.

Oh well, soon the hustle and bustle of construction will end and occupancy will begin, but there will be many, many more pojects to look forward to in the very near future such as 432 Park, Manhattan West, Hudson Yards Twin Towers, One Hudson Yards, Tower Verre, 56 Leonard, 30 Park and 225 W57th.

I think the columns are 50' and extend from the outer column splices on floor 104 or 1,317' to 1,367'
