Forgive me for asking, but what is the 3rd crane used for? Are they using that one for bringing glass and other supplies?

I was in New York last year and took pics of the new World Trade Center but never posted them. I am treating my wife to a weekend in the Big Apple from October 19th thru the 21st (which is actually a year to the day since our trip last year). I'll have to take pics then, and post those and the other pics from last year to show the progress from a year ago...

Looking at that shot from the south of 1wtc and 4wtc, it makes you recall when the Twins were being built. So great to see 1wtc getting closer to being done. Anyone know whether that setback feature near the top of 4wtc will have any kind of observation area, to look down on the plaza and at 1wtc? Just wondering.

I do not believe so, merely because it is strictly an office building, it would kinda be like the old 7 WTC having an observation deck, or the Marriot from the old complex having one, pretty un-necessary lol.

Are the FDNY and NYPD sharing radio frequencies from now on? Do you at the very least have radios that are compatible so that you can speak to one another in the case of an attack? Not a criticism, but it is something that should be addressed by someone in both the FDNY and NYPD. Of course, I understand if you can't address this directly either.


We do not share frequencies with the NYPD. However, we have access to NYPD frequencies on our radios and they have access to ours as well.

That's not uncommon on the top of skyscrapers, you just don't see it because it's usually hidden, as it will be here. This isn't an exact replica of the Twins,
so I wouldn't judge anything based on that.

You're right. I think it that was exactly the architect's intention in designing 1WTC...To make it look like the North Tower from some angles, and from others, make it look like the Washington Monument or even the Statue of Liberty's torch. I think that was the reason behind the tapering design. And, once it's finished, 1WTC will blend nicely with New York's other classic skyscrapers, the Empire State Building & Chrysler Building. All will have tapering designs with a prominent spire...So the whole skyline will blend different generations of builds together quite well. :cool:

Ahhhhhhh. :slob: It's surreal, but in a good way, to see only one crane at 4 WTC and to see 1 WTC about to finish assembling its 4th crane. I honestly can't believe that much time has elapsed already. I never got to see the original twins (or even the complex) in person... So I am very thankful to have seen 1 and 4 WTC in person while they've both been under construction. The very first time I ever visited NYC was in early 2006, when there was still nothing at the complex and right before 7 WTC officially opened, so I missed out on seeing that construction in person. It'll be a nice story to share with my family down the road. :)

Pretty sure there have been no badly-taken pictures of 1 WTC via the SI Ferry. God, that is seriously one of my top fave ways to see 1 WTC from afar. :tup:

Looking at the Petronas towers next to WTC1 make the CTBUH seem even more irrelevant. Counting those sticks on Petronas while not counting the massive tower on WTC as part of the building height seems pretty absurd.

1wtc & 4wtc look amazing and will be state of the art. Once these two buildings are finished companies and employees and even regular citizens will be flocking back to downtown nyc in droves! This is the part of NYC that they really deserve: safe, modern, state of the art buildings!

Carbondale/Lower Manhattan -- The recent anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks of 2001 offered Americans an opportunity to reflect on the fact that the new World Trade Center complex being built in Lower Manhattan will soon stand as a symbol of resilience and strength near Ground Zero.
And Carbondale will be making a significant contribution to the construction of the lead building, One World Trade Center, known more simply as 1 WTC and dubbed the "Freedom Tower."
That's because Quality Perforating Inc. has been awarded a substantial contract for perforated material which will have a huge impact on the overall project, both in terms of decorative use as well as for the facade of the building.
Mike Gilboy, vice president of QPI, told the NEWS that the firm is providing 175,000 square feet of perforated aluminum with a specialized finish for the structure, which will rise over 100 stories.
"The 20-story base of the tower is wrapped and perforated, and has LED lighting," he explained in outlining how and where QPI's work will be used on the project, "but it also serves a functional purpose in that it provides cooling for the mechanical systems and equipment."
He noted that QPI had already worked on different ancillary aspects related to the project, like ceilings, walls and elevator cab work, prior to being awarded this particular contract.
"There are a number of different areas where we have been supplying to the project, but this is certainly the most prestigious," he offered.
Gilboy said QPI's involvement with the tower began last year.
"We started working with a design consultant in 2011, making some samples for the project when it was in the early stages," he recounted. "Through that, we were able to get to bid on the project in late 2011, and we were awarded the contract in January [of this year]."
Since then, he noted that QPI has been working on producing and delivering the materials — which he said will be installed during the first half of 2013. The tower is scheduled to open in 2014.
"We should have all of our work completed by the end of this year," Gilboy estimated.
"We're very excited to have our footprint on one of the most prestigious portions of the overall World Trade Center project," he related. "It's a tremendous opportunity for us."

What was that one building that was going up next to the original 2 WTC in the 1970 picture? Is that 1 Liberty Plaza? I just checked the wiki page for it, and it says it was completed in 1973 - so it would have been going up at the same time the original twins were going up.

It is sooooo weird seeing construction pics of the original twins - no WFC yet - nothing west of West St at that time. There was literally nothing blocking the view of the twins. So you had quite the spectacular view of the construction from JC and Hoboken in the late 60s/early 70s. :slob:

Yes that is indeed One Liberty Plaza or as it was then called "The US Steel Corporation Building"!!! :) not 1 Liberty Plaza as it was renamed decades later by new owners.

Opening day of Duck hunting here in the midwest,,, got my 5 bird bag limit,,, now watching 1WTC and the more popular rising,, 432 Park Avenue,, didn't know the Drake hotel once occupied that space,, can't wait 4 the base cladding to start.. For my duck hunting ventures 2 Wood ducks, 3 Mallards and 2 Canada Geese... Does anybody know when Base cladding will start???? PPL keep saying OCT.. then some say DEC.. Or will it be the new year?

i can't for the life of me figure out why they would
illuminate the base of this tower instead of the top. hardly anyone will ever see the base at night, but everyone could have seen the tower itself illuminated. what a pointless thing to do. ....

No one will see it? There's got to be like thousands of people that pass by on the west side highway every day and when all the towers are done the memorial will be completely open so you can just walk in. And I think they are lighting up the antenna its just that in renderings it's white.
