I personally thought this was interesting: Judging from the time-line in this video it appears the spire change was made years ago well before the public heard about it! At 53:00 you will notice a WTC 1 drawing on the wall shown with the current "spire/antenna" similar to the one being installed now.

Yeah, I believe ZenSteeldude actually posted that drawing once. The underlying structure (the antenna) has always been the same, which is shown in the drawing. The documentary itself has always used a version of the "completed" spire.

If you look close you'll see that is an "x-ray" shot of the interior structure, the glass is missing in the drawing as well.

Are the guy wires on this spire necessary to the structural support or were they originally designed to be cosmetic?
I know they will help strengthen it but are they a requirement due to the size?

I'm beginning to miss the black netting lol...

Hee, me too! I grew so used to the black netting... There was always at least 20 floors' worth of black netting on 1 WTC at all times. It's sooooo weird that there's nearly zero black netting now (just the blue at the very top!) and that it is almost completely cladded now. The renderings we've seen is really coming to life. So odd! But in a good way. :)

Hee, I had to go look after you said that. It seems to be a mishmash of construction in various stages -- you can see when 1 WTC had 3 cranes on top and when they were constructing the temporary platform, but the amount of glass on it matches how much they had up last summer. 4 WTC confused the hell out of me. LOL! That's about how it looked in late 2011, right? Yikes. You're right, I wonder what's up with that on Google Earth. I remember when Google Earth was showing the deconstruction of the Deutsche Bank Building across from the complex in pretty much real-time -- it was so neat.

You have to admit... update or no update, it's neat seeing the complex like that! :)

It's decriminalized, but if they were caught smoking and selling it while on-site, they deserve to be punished because they might be putting other people in danger. Working while high on a high building is dangerous for everybody.

Just joined and as a NYC transplant to California, LOVE following the progress of 1WTC. Thanks everyone for the pictures! So amazing to get the skyline back.

You know, the banter about the spire is so interesting and makes me reflect on my childhood. When the WTC was completed, my parents took us kids down to the "fill" (what is now Battery Park City) circa 1972-ish. It was really just a huge field of dirt and sand and we had a BBQ. I'll never forget people complaining about the towers. Non-stop. "They don't match Manhattan"... "The most boring slab-sided buildings ever erected"... "They ruin NYC". On and on and on. Then, a few years later when they put the antenna on the north tower, people went berserk. Now, 40 years later, I bet all those folks miss the twin towers as much as I do... antenna and all.

As an engineer, I can tell you, I can't see HOW the radome could have possibly been maintained/repaired. I know many doubt the explanation by the builders but I have to say, it would have been impossible to clean/maintain/repair that multi-panel covering without erecting scaffolding or installing some kind of permanent "kangaroo crane". The other option would have been to affix the panels on the interior of a skeleton but that would present even greater challenges.

It's difficult to see it now, but believe me, once the temporary platforms are removed... and the cranes vanish... the design pattern from a distance (which is the view EVEYRYONE will see... not the close-ups posted here) will not look transparent... it will appear solid and actually resemble the original radome pattern... particularly since most people will be looking UP at the spire, not directly into it at close range.

The current design actually resembles the AT&T building antennas in SoHo... transparent and clunky zoomed in... but solid and patterned from afar:

Greetings to all,
I follow the forum long before my membership.
I think the antenna-spire is a fake problem.First of all I think the radome is not nice form live like in the rendering.
The radome has a synthetic white very cold, then i dn't think a spire so thick as that of the original design is the best thing, as too thick and intrusive creates a streamlined building.
Speaking of things more concrete, anyone knows if the small platforms surrounding the joints of the pieces of the antenna will be removed at the end?

With the columns of vented glass, 1WTC has a little resemblance to 20 Exchange Place and its three dark arched recesses and columns of windows:

As spire grows higher, 1 WTC is Manhattan's new skyline centerpiece

http://media.nj.com/ledgerupdates_impact/photo/12336110-large.jpg

By Steve Strunsky/The Star-Ledger
February 26, 2013

Looking up from across the Hudson, or down from the roof, the view is impressive even to those not easily impressed. With its still-unfinished spire now reaching almost 1,500 feet in the air and rising, One World Trade Center as seen from the New Jersey Turnpike Extension — or many other vantage points in the state’s northeastern corner — stands head and shoulders above surrounding skyscrapers, putting a new peak on the Lower Manhattan skyline that had been missing since Sept. 11.

"When you think of tall buildings and the role they play, it’s that image of the skyline," said Kevin Brass, a spokesman for the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an international arbiter of building heights. "When you think of the skyline of New York going back before 9/11, it becomes the image of the city, so now the tower is going to create a new image for that city that will be visible for miles."

But if One World Trade Center looks tall from the New Jersey Turnpike Extension, the 360-degree rooftop vista is downright extraterrestrial. To the west, the 780-foot Goldman Sachs Tower in Jersey City, New Jersey’s tallest building, looks like a walk-up. The mighty Hudson River is a mere stream trickling over the horizon, while the jagged line of the majestic Palisades is reduced to a crack in the sidewalk. Even 1 WTC’s only panoramic rival, the Empire State Building, seems far less formidable than from more earthly vantage points. Members of the public will almost be able to see for themselves after the building opens early next year, from a public observatory on the 102nd floor.

Guiding a recent tour of the building, Steve Plate, the man in charge of World Trade Center construction for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, stood on the roof of the tower amid four house-sized air-conditioning units 1,368 feet above Vesey Street, craning his neck to look up.

With New Jersey, New York and the rest of the Earth falling away from him in every direction, Plate’s attention was fixed on the only people higher in the overcast sky than he was: a crew lowering the latest section of the tower’s concrete rooftop spire into place, raising the tower’s total height to more than 1,470 feet.

Soaring a total of 408 feet above the roof when completed, the tapering, masonry spire will play a significant role in how the tower is viewed by the rest of the world. The completed, 18-piece spire will eventually bring the tower’s overall height to 1,776 feet. Aside from its symbolic reference to the year the United States declared independence, the height could qualify One World Trade Center as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, if the Council on Tall Buildings declares the spire an architectural element of the tower, and not merely antennae.

By last week, even the unfinished spire had already pole-vaulted 1 WTC’s overall height above the 1,450-foot roof height of the Willis Tower in Chicago, formerly the Sears Tower, the hemisphere’s reigning tallest building. Brass, the building council spokesman, said the group’s height committee will issue a determination after 1 WTC’s official dedication.

With the columns of vented glass, 1WTC has a little resemblance to 20 Exchange Place and its three dark arched recesses and columns of windows:

http://i.imgur.com/UKa9LU6.jpg?1

Ever since they did away with the radome and denuded the communications ring, the resemblance is even more uncanny.

Man are we looking at the same bldg,, I see nothing that resembles the new 1WTC are you referring to the old 1 wtc, cause I see nothing at all? color? cladding? antennae? You must be comparing to the fallen 1? Sorry Vandelay, just don't see it: Also seems like CTBUH is climbing on board with the Spire talk, which kinda surprises me that they're from Chicago and would like to save their Sears tower.. On roof height?

I see the resemblance. Obviously they dont share the same material and arent the same height but they both have a similar visual language with the vents, taper, and lattice steel antenna/structure thing.

Where did you hear about CTBUH's softening position on the antenna mast?

They aren't on board with anything, just stating was has been stated repeatedly. And the city doesn't have anything to do with it.

Brass, the building council spokesman, said the group’s height committee will issue a determination after 1 WTC’s official dedication.

That's fair.

Depends on where the measurment is from. It's 1,368 ft from the southern, or memorial facing side. (Fulton)

This spire is certainly the best spire I have ever seen. Exactly how a spire should look, and its only going to get better with the top pieces and its final touches. The top very tall 3-4 pieces are what give the spire its sexiness. Patience is a virtue.

Also: Anyone see the night shots of the base panels? They are so reflective and bright, even at night. I cannot wait for the complete look, with LEDs and fins. The base is going to look remarkable. I was upset when the prismatic glass was cancelled due to mismanagement, but the replacement base cladding has been chosen wisely.

We're all seeing these close-ups with it covered in a multitude of TEMPORARY worker platforms. Once completed, the spire viewed from the ground (without the radome) will appear a solid, tapered mast with a beacon on top. It looks awful at the moment because of all the platforms at every segment level.

There were mechanical floors on 108/109 (as well as other floors), but most of the HVAC and mechanical equipment was contained in a central plant on the basement floors below the complex.

Unlike the original towers though, 1WTC is self-contained and doesn't have a central plant.
