View Full Version : Brandon phototour

I moved to Brandon two and a half weeks ago and I wanted to do a photo tour since it's rarely been seen on this forum. The population is 40,000 and it's the 2nd largest city in Manitoba. Pics were taken on a very chilly Sunday afternoon.

Hmmm, I guess a comparable city to Brandon would be Moose Jaw.

Brandon doesn't seem to have the architecture or the downtown that Moose Jaw has. WOuld be an interesting thread to see a comparison between the two cities. Both are relatively the same size.

Very nice, Mr. Blitz. How are you liking the university (my alma mater)?

I used to live in an old victorian house on 15th street, not too far away. Miss that place.

Have you been to the Double Decker pub at 10th and Rosser, or is it still there? If you're still around in September, they usually close off the street in front for Picklefest...unless it's no longer running as well.

You can't tell from the pics, but Brandon does have a fairly sizable downtown strip (two one-way streets running parallel).

I was there this past summer, and I was quite impressed with the downtown there. Lots of cool big old houses around the core area too.

Do you mean "own"? If so, I would disagree with you. I do like Moose Jaw, but I like Brandon much more; not as dry and oh so close to Riding Mountain National Park and Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, very picturesque forested areas.

The decker is a great pub, and it is still there....you can see the Union Jack awning over the door in one of the photos.

Oops, I see it now.. thanks. I'm glad it's still there - I'm going to be in Brandon last weekend in Feb. for my brother's wedding social and I plan on making a visit. :D

I'm enjoying it - it's been an adjustment getting used to the slower pace and small town atmosphere and the cold of course, but it's going good.

You went to BrandonU? What did you study? The school is nice, it's so small! I went from one of the biggest schools in the country (UWO) to one of the smallest. Yes, I've been to the Double Decker Tavern - that was one of the first places I went to in town, haha. They could use a few more Tim Horton's in town, can't believe there's only two of them. Maybe that's just the Ontario in me talking though...

There wasn't any Tim's in town until very recently.. I think the one in the south end opened in 2004 or 2005.. the one on 18th and the TCH has been around a bit longer.. maybe 10 years.

I took geography and psychology there, Blitz. what do you teach?

Nice pics! It would be good to see similar shots in one of the warmer months, and with people moving about (instead of a Sunday?). It is in a nice little valley too.

I've never really been in Brandon proper, just passed through on the Trans Canada Hwy.

Does anyone have a sense of whether downtown Brandon is any healthier than downtown Winnipeg?

It seems from the photos that Brandon has been able to keep its Main Street. I assume most people still do their shopping on Main Street, and that for the most part their downtown is pedestrian friendly.

Most people shop at the Shopper's Mall at the south end of the city, or the new-fangled Corral centre near the hill. There is a mall downtown (Brandon Gallery), but it's a lot smaller and has been hurting quite a bit. Maybe things have turned around for it recently, I'm not sure..

The Strand Theater on 10th Street closed as well.. now everyone goes the the googleplex at the south end (Empire Cinemas).

I went to BU from 85-89. Have a 3 yr BA. They just did a major refit of the Main Admin Building. Prior to that it was pretty run-down.

FYI back in 88 a group of students came from Ontario universities to complete a 2 yr teaching program. Most of them were from Toronto, Hamilton or Waterloo. They sure had a culture shock (especially the ones from Toronto) on the vastness of the prairies and that at night you could actually see stars. I also took a group of them on a visit to my brother's farm (at Killarney) in which they saw an actual live birth of a calf. Their eyes were as big as saucers. After that we took a run down to the Bucket (a pub in the middle of nowhere) in North Dakota, another eye opener for folks whose experience with the border staff are much more formal. As we drove through I called the US guard by his first name. As we came back with a couple of roadies the Canadian guard waved us through (he's a second cousin )
Ahhh life in small town Manitoba.

ha...so we both have a blue baby in brandon....mine's the canad inns refrigerator....they actually asked me to reduce the window sizes by 1 inch on all sides to save money....i fought long and hard to keep the suspended canopy and then they hung those gawd awful flags off the end of it...dammit!

Brandon used to have a cute little street car system back in the day too..

Too bad it's long gone (1913 - 1932).

Brandon looks like a nice little city. I'll have to check it out one of these days.

Haha, yeah I noticed how starry the nights are too. Another thing that's odd about the weather is how bloody sunny it is here, in Ontario the winters are cloudy for days on end. Plugging in the car at night is something totally new to me too. When I arrived I crossed the border at Highway 10 and it's just a little shack and I actually had to wait 5 minutes for a guard to come out....huge difference from the massive border crossings I'm used to in Windsor.

It's great to see Brandon going through a significant boom at this point, and the same thing can be said for other Manitoba cities like Steinbach and Winkler/Morden. Keep up the good work and spread the fortune around the province please :D
