The best pizza in my opinion is Papa Johns, but unfortunately they are only out west right now and I am in Ontario. What is your favourite pizza chain in Canada?
Western Pizza is the best...Started in Regina and now they have locations in Alberta, and Arizona...
www.westernpizzaexpress.ca
They load the toppings on and the pizza still tastes fresh the next morning out of the fridge...

^^ best pizza in the country is in Regina, and you named it right there.
Not really a fan of chain pizza places.. the original mom and pop guys are the best.
Pizza Hut smells like children's vomit for some reason. Must be due to the amount of toddlers scarfing down all they can get their filthy tomato-sauced hands on at the 'all you can eat' sunday buffets. they must have industrial grade carpet in those places.. I can't see the stains, but the odor still lingers.

I'm sorry, but anybody who thinks Western is exceptional needs to try other pizza places. When they opened in Calgary I heard Sask transplants talk about it like it was the second coming of Christ, and.... it's not. It's okay. Just okay. For that Greek-style deep-dish, Nick's and Sophie's are fantastic and much better than Western.
I don't think there are any great pizza chains anywhere (never mind in Canada). There are so many good indie or small-chain places.

mmmm.....funky pickle.
Wicked Wedge in Calgary as well.
Flying Wedge in Van is not bad.
There is NO such thing as a good pizza "chain".
Best pizza I've had in AB was a "flat bread" at River Cafe, and equally impressive was a pizza I had the Iron Bridge Cafe in Edm (that's now something else at 102 ave over Groat Rd).

Have to agree with Furry on this one. The best pizza I've ever eaten is the pizza from Nick's (http://nickscalgary.com/index.htm), both from their restaurant by McMahon Stadium and from their south-side takeaway. Next time you're in Calgary, order the all-meat Number 26, the "Petros".
Apropos of nothing in particular, I think it was the son of the restaurant's founder, Tim Petros, who played as a fullback for the Stampeders in the early Nineties, and his jersey number was also 26.

Nicks/Tims pizza is far from great, Sophies is also good but to say they are both much better than WP is an opinion just like mine is of the two you mentioned...
If sask transplants say its good, that means 1 in 4 Calgarians think its good...If you ask me, thats a pretty big number of WP supporters...
There are a couple other ones in Regina that are quite good..Houston Pizza and Trifons pizza...Houstons was on food network Canad aas having one of the best pizzas...

Best pizza? Many places rank up there.. Of the chains I prefer Pizza Delight and Boston Pizza.. But there are some great local establishments around like Miss Italia on 192 Curé-Poirier Ouest in Longueuil.
Worst pizza I ever had was at Megalos in Kingston. They really overdid it with the feta cheese.

Yeah, that was my favourite chain in the maritimes. They need to bring it out to Ontario and end this provinces obsession with the blandness that is Pizza Pizza.
Regina isn't called the pizza capital of the world for no reason.
I do enjoy Western, but I rarely eat it. The sauce they use is the best.
Houston and Trifons are both very good.
But nothing beats Copper Kettle....pretty pricey though.
Pizza Pizza is the best chain pizza we have here (Papa Johns burnt down in the late 90s, so I don't know if it was part of Papa John's chain or just a local company with the same name. The location is now a pet store) but the best pizza place in the region is Stan's Pizza in the old Safeway's on Cumberland, right across from the McDonalds. It looks like a shanty, but the pizza there is the second best in the West Superior area, after Grand Marais' 'Sven and Ole's'.

I was always of the opinion that pizza by its very nature can never really be great. Good, but not really great. As for chains, Boston Pizza and Pizza Pizza are pretty good, mainly because they offer something other than the tomato sauce and toppings that every other chain has.

Gonna vote Panago for consistency. They are always clean, and taste exactly the same everywhere I've been. That's what I'm looking for in Chain pizza, which is different from indie pizza - Funky Pickle in Edmonton or The Joint in Victoria being stellar examples.

Il Fornello is pretty good too. Wood burning ovens. I remember about 18 years ago walking downtown Montreal, and wondering why no one had opened up a pizza by-the-slice (point) takeout spot. I wish now I had had the capital to do it myself. Within 6 years they were everywhere, just like in Toronto. I still think there is a market for a good pizza
by the slice chain in Montreal. Most of them are the 99 cent point places that are pretty gross.

There are only two restaurants in Canada that are accredited by the Napoli pizza authority (yes, there is such a thing, they mandate what sorts of ingredients are used, the temps of the ovens, etc etc). One is Il Fornello, and the other is the sublime Pulcinella, in Calgary.

KOD is the best chain, its independent, and the inventor of the Donair. Their pizza would kill anything west of Toronto. Whats with Quebeqois putting the meat under the cheese? It just isn't right.
As for Papa Johns, or Pizza Pizza, other large, mass produced chains... thats just plain horrible. Has anybody had real NY pizza before?? In North America, thats how it should be done unless you are talking about gourmet pizza (Italian style).

I've eaten pizza in NYC, but don't remember it being extraordinary. Cheesecake yes, but pizza I don't remember
as being unusual. Personnally my fave is the ultra thin crust type. Not too much tomato sauce, and a mix of Fontana, Asiago and Mozzerella cheese. Margharita. Simple, but the best. I know it is crap, but I had a slice of Pizza Pizza's bacon double cheeseburger when it came out of the oven and it was GOOD! LOL! Maybe I was just starved. Also Pizza Pizza makes amazing chicken wings! :)
But all in all, it is just pizza, which is a pretty simple dish. It is not like elaborate French cooking.. I am sure there is good pizza all over the world. The proof of the pudding is in the taste, not where the flour came from.

worst pizza?
Pizza Slut sucks. Tastes only marginally better than McCain's Frozen Flattened Horseshit patties.
So does Pizza Pizza (what a stupid name), the home of the stale slice (I don't give a flying Fvck if it is Paul Tracey's favorite pizza). Domino's pizza has too much sauce and too little cheese....except when it comes to the staff, who are a bunch of cheesy greaseballs. Pizza Donini (Montreal chain...do they still exist?) has terrible commercials ("I want my pizza and I want it now! Piz-za-Do-ni-ni! 3-3-6-Oh!Oh!Oh!Oh!); so bad in fact that the ads affect the taste of the pizza. Little Caesar's is unbelievably inconsistent (good, bad, and ugly). Boston Pizza...what is the fuggin deal putting those strange ingredients (LETTUCE ON A PIZZA????????????!!!!????)?

Eww serious can't anyone make any decent veggie food.
I asked for no meat on my Sub in rural New York state and she started putting on fish.
Then in New York we asked for veggie pizza and they were asking do you want eggplant or cauliflower. AH!!
Then they put on green pepper on the pizza that were like 4-5 inches long.
Meat, Poultry, and Fish, are three different things, according to the grocery store I work at. As for no 'poow coot widdle aniemows' next time.

Well they do get voted Saskatoon's favorite Pizza every year in the Planet S reader's poll. Perhaps they set up there to cater to expat Saskies. If the recent stories of the mass Sask. repatriation are true, maybe Vern's tenure in Calgary will be a brief one.

I'm not too sure about that poll! We went to Smiley's who proudly displayed that they were Saskatoon's favourite 'all you can eat' (two years in a row, if I'm not mistaken) when we were in Saskatoon visiting friends, a group of 11 of us. The food was awful. No one ate more than a couple of bites. We couldn't figure out why it was so busy, or why they were voted the best. We ordered from Vern's one night too while we were in town. It wasn't awful, but I don't really get the hype. It was nothing to write home about.

I think the answer is simple: Saskatonians like crap (and lots of it). Quantity trumps quality every time.
Yes, this is a gross generalization, with an element of truth behind it.

I'm making short work of a Papa Johns Meat Lover with a frosty Bud Light right now... while I watch the Flames game.
Panago, Dominos and Pizza 73 are the only others we call for delivery... but all chains suck compared to dine-in's

Anyone who has ever had a good Verns will never want anything else. Their pizza is like anywhere else, depending on the outlet it can be great or it can taste like garbage. I found the original store on 11th Street West to be the best.

Vern's is amazing for the amount of toppings and one of my favourites in Calgary. But my favourite is still from back home Santa Lucia in Winnipeg. Their sauce is a perfect balance of sweet and savoury. I don't know if any 'peggers have mentiomned them already but I'm sure some will agree.

You had me with the "frosty Bud", but lost me with the "Light"...Just curious.... why does anyone drink Light Beer? I mean.... isn't the main reason one drinks beer to get a buzz? Light beer hasn't got any taste and less alcohol... I'm just not getting it, I suppose.... :poke:

Interestingly, when Mamma's opened in Toronto in 1957, they made the traditional Italian style Pizza Pie (like the one that was shown earlier) but somewhere along the line they morphed to a thin crust style... I wonder when the change occurred? Would be interesting to go back and taste one of the originals....
People drink light beer because, like my grandfather, they are pussies.

"Gramps, you are a pussy". Go tell him. Growing up in Winnipeg we used to buy Old Stock because it had the highest alcohol. People wouldn't have dreamed of paying money for beer with lower alcohol!! LOL! Didn't matter if it tasted like kerosene.. was more bang for you buck.
I won't call him a pussy. :O
Bastard locked his kids in trunks fer fuck sakes :yuck:
My family scares and disgusts me. :(
