Great pictures, a city that often gets overlooked in the national discussion.
My wife and I were considering moving to the Twin City area a couple of years ago, and we spent a week looking around the city. I was very impressed with downtown Minneapolis, and the area surrounding it. It kind of reminded me of a smaller version of Chicago. Very lively. Nice suburbs too, and the lakes...
St Paul was a little surprising, kind of pretty like a Providence or small Boston kind of town, but pretty dead outside of the work hours.

Minneapolis is a tantalizing disappointment. It's really got everything you want in a city - downtown retail, beautiful skyscrapers, decent nightlife, etc. - but somehow it doesn't really pull together. I've wondered why this is. Could it be the extreme winters force too much of the streetlife indoors (and into skywalks, malls, cars et al)? Did accommodating the car destroy too much urban fabric?
These are great pictures however. By any standard, Minneapolis is one of the better American cities. It's a city I root for because it typifies those things I want America to be about: cosmopolitan values, political decency, solid civic heritage, and a commitment to the arts. I'd sooner spend a winter in Minneapolis than a balmy spring in Las Vegas.

Thanks for the comments and feedback everyone! I appreciate it.
soleri: That's an interesting point. I may know what you mean. Minneapolis is great but sometimes you have to find (and seek) what you're looking for. Some days the city is bustling and others it is a tomb. It's seasonal, it's situational and it's moody. But I love it.
Last night I went to the roof of an apartment building called "The Towers" (courtesy of a friend of a friend). Anyway here are some shots from it. It was FRIGID because of the wind so I snapped these quickly. I need a new camera too, it's only 3 megapixil so zoom is pretty much not an option at night; it's so grainy it'd be like getting sand in your eye.

i agree. I lived in minneapolis during graduate school, and the problem with minneapolis is that the only people who come downtown outside of buisness hours is college kids and clubbers to go and drink at night.
No one really shops downtown. Its pretty dead. Everyone goes to the mall of America. Plus everyone who lives in Minnesota thinks its the best place in the world. And everyone owns a cabin up north! You would think the whole dang city has a cabin up north.
Don't get me wrong minnesota has great things about it. I love the cold!

I don't think Minnesota is the best place in the world, and I am a native. I also don't have a cabin up north, neither do any of my friends families:) I don't shop at mall of america...I suppose alot of suburbanites do? Not as many locals there as you would think. Also a ton of people come downtown to dine and go to shows(orpheum, pantages, state, hennepin stages, guthrie, jeune lune, music box) they are not college kids going to drink. Not to sound too defensive, I agree downtown could be a lot better...but I have been to many comparable sized US cities, and I would have to say some of those criticisms are overly harsh.
I do like it here though, and our downtown is doing a lot better than many in the US...Could definately use more shoppers though, among other things! I am hoping retail will get a boost with all the residents moving downtown...we will see what happens. Oh, we also need A LOT more greenery on the actual donwtown streets.
PS. as for the "no one shops downtown"...I Didn't think that was really warranted, so I was looking for numbers...so far I came up with these sources:
http://www.ameriprise.com/amp/global/careers/about-twin-cities.asp
"Minneapolis ranks fifth in the country in total downtown retail sales"
http://oopsla.acm.org/oopsla2k/fp/2u_minn.html
"Minneapolis ranks fifth in the country in total downtown retail sales"
I don't really believe that we are 5th in the US, but sales are not that bad. Wish I could find numbers on downtown retail sales.
Anyway, some of the best mpls pics i have seen on here. I will stop blabbing now:)

Jan 19, 2007, 4:54 AM
I think part of the problem is that so much of the retail is inside on the second floor that it makes the city seem more empty than it actually is. With the skyways, downtown is basically a giant habitrail for office workers.
You won't hear me complaining about that when it is below zero though.

considering how "big" both of the twin cities feel, in skyline and other unmeasureable ways, the area seems like it could measure up to metros with higher population, like atlanta or detroit. it's really quite suprising how large the skyline is from some angles. i'd bet it even feels bigger than detroit, and that's not even including st. paul. in summation, i'll second kevin's comment above.

I'd take that reference with a grain of salt. I've seen that claim before and think it was accurate in the 1980s. However, downtown retail definitely took a major hit when the Mall of America opened in 1992.
We still have a successful Macy's store (formerly the original Dayton's Flagship store and then Marshall Fields), and a successful Target, plus a Nieman Marcus (which supposedly is improving, but probably doesn't have too strong of sales) and a 4-level Saks Off-Fifth Store (used to be Saks Fifth Ave, but Minnesotans don't buy a lot of $100 ties!). There also are stores like Crate & Barrel, Barnes & Noble, Gap, Banana Republic etc... Though we may lose Borders.
I'd guess we're probably 8th, 9th or 10th in the country for dwtn Retail--after NYC, Chicago, Boston, San Fran,Seattle, Portland, Philly.
ANYWAY--Great pictures showing a moodier side of Mpls

Right and everyone in North Carolina is related. Serious. You've achieved your goal of being one of the most ignorant jackasses on this site.
I moved here about 7 years ago and from my experiences living and working downtown, I can say there are plenty of shoppers downtown. Has the MOA hurt downtown businesses? I'm sure it has, but to say no one shops downtown is just ridiculous.
Also, claiming that the only people who come downtown outside of buisness hours are college kids and clubbers is completely false. There are plenty of cultural institutions that constantly attract people downtown. Have you ever heard of the Guthrie, Walker, State Theatre, Orpheum Theatre, Orchestra Hall or how about the Metrodome and Target center that attract thousands of fans nightly. In addition to these institutions and arenas there are numerous restaurants and bars downtown that attract people of all age groups. In other words, there's a great mix of people venturing out every night.
Finally, MOST people can't afford to own a cabin and if they could why would you knock it?

Uh your a troll. I was a grad student at the U of M for a number of years. Plus I lived right next to downtown Minneapolis, in uptown to be exact.
The fact of the matter is that downtown Minneapolis at night is mostly clubbers and people going out to drink. Very few people go downtown on the weekends. Most go to the mall of America.
I'm not saying its a bad place to live, I'm just stating the facts. IF that makes you upset then live with it.
And many many people in the suburbs have a cabin up north. Most of the lakes in minnesota are ringed with cabins and vacation homes. So my claim is not completely unfounded. Don't get me wrong Minneapolis is a great place, but I am just pointing out what I have seen for myself living there :haha:

After reading your so-called facts, I find it hard to believe you ever lived here. Think about it; a majority of baseball or basketball games, which are almost always played at night, attract more people than the clubs and/or bars do. Add in the numerous restaurants that are busy every night of the week and the other cultural institutions and you will end up with a number that exceeds clubbers and bar hoppers by far. That's every night of the week.
Your claim about most people going to the MOA is obnoxious as well. It's common sense that if most went to the MOA to shop, downtown would be void of any retail and the metro's other malls and lifestyle centers would be dead.
Furthermore, there are over 3,000,000 million people in the Twin Cities metro area; roughly 2.5 million make up the suburbs. You actually believe that "many many" of those suburban families own a cabin?
Thanks for the laugh.

Those are some great pics. I never get out to Minneapolis much and that is probably because I grew up east of Saint Paul. That is a funny thing about the Twin Cities. You can put a line right down the middle and you'll find that people who grew up on the west side of the cities hardly venture into Saint Paul and people who grew up in Saint Paul and it's eastern suburbs rarely venture into Minneapolis. I will go to Minneapolis for Twins Games and the occasional dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory. That's about it. Perhaps I need to find some time and get my ass into Minneapolis for a thread of my own.
Thanks for the photos!

That's interesting that you brought that up Plantboy. I have a friend who grew up in south Minneapolis and he said he and his friends always stuck to MPLS. just because there wasn't any reason to go to St. Paul. A friend of mine from West St. Paul said he and his friends never wanted to go to Minneapolis because of some "pride" thing. Very odd.

A few thoughts from a native Minnesotan:
Contrary to what some believe, not every suburbanite has a cabin up north, though there are plenty of resorts and "family-owned cabins" to where I can see where someone got that impression.
Regarding downtown retail.....from what I've seen, urban purists tend to deplore the skyway system, because they think it robs downtown of street-level retail/pedestrian experience. That may be true, but the skyways are at a minimum a necessary evil, especially in the wintertime. Nevermind that even during the summer they are A) air conditioned, and B) you don't have to worry about being run over or hit by some wayward Minnesota Viking out in the street (those who follow the Vikings should know where that came from).
The reason we may lose the Border's downtown is mainly twofold: 1) the crime along Hennepin Ave certainly is playing a factor, 2) Hennepin Ave is, IMO, on the edge of the downtown core...it certainly does not see the foot traffic that a location at 5th and Nicollet or at 7th and Marquette would...
Lastly, the Mall of America is just as much a tourist attraction as it is a shopping mall. Sure there are locals there, but that's because Minnesotans have gotten used to large shopping malls. Comes from having the first fully enclosed shopping mall in the nation....
Stephenapolis
Jan 21, 2007, 6:18 PM
Reason C that Borders is closing. They suck. Barnes and Noble is two blocks away and multiple times better. ;)
ajfroggie
Jan 21, 2007, 7:06 PM
Eye of the beholder....I've always liked Border's transportation, planning, and design selections better than Barnes & Noble, who rarely ever has any of the latter two...
MtnClimber
Jan 21, 2007, 8:44 PM
Your right crime certainly has something to do with the fact that borders in Block E is closing down, but the poor sales is another reason why Borders wants out. I frequented the downtown borders many many times, and you just dont see many people going to that borders location.

What a beautiful city. Thanks for the pics!
Again, thanks for the comments everyone! :)
One thing that I've noticed with Minneapolis versus other cities is that its sidewalks are narrow in downtown. Except for Nicollet mall, most of the core of downtown is not great for leisurely walking. I think the buildings may be too close to the streets. Maybe that sounds odd but I'll try to find some pictures that show this. ---It's building wall, to narrow concrete sidewalk, to street. --- The sidewalks seem to lack character in some of downtown.
There aren't many buildings or plazas set back from the street. There are a couple mini plazas (like US Bank Plaza (formerly Pillsbury Towers)). But often they aren't inviting. Nicollet Mall is nice but still it's loud because of the buses.
If I had my way (haha) I would make Nicollet mall purely pedestrian and bike. Add much more vegetation and really make it SCREAM at people that it is the center of downtown and you should be here! Shop here! Walk here! This is our Rockefeller Center! etc.
The skyways do pull a lot of the business storefronts to be on the inside of the building rather than the outside. But they are a mixed blessing. On one hand you can come from out of town on business in the arctic depth of winter and only have to go outside from the car to the hotel entrance. You enter the hotel (I work at the Marquette and many guests have been excited about this) and for an entire week you can stay indoors and go from one end of downtown to the other, walk through gigantic indoor atriums and waterfalls and plazas by Pelli, Philip Johnson, IM Pei, SOM. Go shopping, connect to great restaurants, go to theaters (film or live), exercise, swim, buy liquor, go to a bar, etc.
On the other hand you stand on the street and see 7 blocks of people walking in tubes above the street. Suddenly downtown becomes the biggest anthill you've ever seen. haha.
Anyway, that's just a thought.
Minneapolis is great though and in the summer it's awesome.

Taller is not always better. Although the original design is quite nice. They didn't scrap the design though, I think they built it in Cleveland!

Thanks for clearing that up Sun. When the initial design had been discussed before I just figured it was the same basic design as the current tower only with 10 additional floors or so. The early design is pretty nice but I'll take our tower over the initial design (similar to Cleveland's Key Tower) any day.

Minneapolis is just one of those city that has such a beautiful skyline. There is just nothing bad you can say about. Just amazing.

There isn't a clear definition really, but for the most part Minneapolis is west and south of the Mississippi and St. Paul is east and north.

Cool pictures, both in subject and color scheme. IMO, the Minneapolis skyline is one of the best, partly due to the preponderance of colroed glass and the contrast between blue IDS and orange Wells Fargo.
225 S 6th is one of my 5 fav skyscrapers.

Great photographs. Minneapolis appears to be a very livable city (once I get over the weather of course).

What a beautiful set of pics! I've only been there once and it was in the airport, but I wanted so bad to skip our flight and go out and explore the city.
Oh.... does anyone know if there have been any threads with pics of the U of Minnesota? It's one of my top college choices right now and I would love to see some pics of the campus

You should definitly go to the U of M, it is an amazing school with an amazing and beautiful campus stretching from St. Paul to Minneapolis.

I went here in the summer of 2007, I have a diffrent opinion about this city. I used to hear that it is cold....................nothing else. This place is very alive in the summer, so I suspect it is well alive in the winter. The city is maintained and organized. They really fit alot in its small boundries. The city is amazingly colorful to. All those expressways give the area a big city feel. That rail transit is cool.

Minneapolis is such an overlooked city! Not many people ever travel to it because it isn't a typical vacation destination. Too bad for those who have never been!
I was born and raised near the Twin Cities and now live in the south. I miss Minneapolis and St. Paul. Fun, clean, safe (mostly) beautiful cities. Too bad winter lasts for so long if that isn't your thing (like me!)
Great thread!

Nice pics. We have an office in MSP area and I hit it a few times a year. Top 3 of my favorite Midwest cities. Minneapolis is the only major Midwest city (besides Chicago) that never really had a significant downtown decline. Or am I wrong?
