Okay, here's the skinny...

I thought it would be interesting (and sorta fun) to see how many people like having the separate polls posted to see what the consensus is on new Calgary developments and how many people don't like having the seperate polls posted.

I like the polls myself, if only to see what other people's opinions are on various projects. I think the poll feature is there for a reason, why not make use of it.

But don't people just discuss the new buildings in the Calgary thread already every time a new building is proposed? Or do you guys do this for opinions from people that may not read the Calgary thread?

I think in-depth discussions of individual projects and Calgary-specific issues should be done on a Calgary sub-forum or on a dedicated offsite forum. Much like the Victoria people have done.

It's inconsiderate to the rest of the Western Canadians that they have to go through a bazillion Calgary related threads to get to what they want.

The volume of Calgary related discussion has outgrown the scope of this forum.

I firmly disagree. See "New Blue Bomber Stadium," "B.C. ski hill finally begins $1B Resort," "New Arena for Downtown Edmonton," etc. There are plenty of threads being posted that are not Calgary specific. In fact if you look at it, the Calgary Construction thread gets so much posting that these threads are among the very few out there that have anything to do with Calgary. There are many more Winnipeg or Vancouver specific threads. Besides, if nobody posted city-specific threads then there would be almost no discussion between Western Canadian forumers at all, who tend to be insular and stick to their own mega-threads. (In fact, this was very characteristic of the Victoria forumers who have, for the most part, removed themselves from the wider community)

I do hope, however, that these project polling threads stick to the big projects or more interesting ones so that we don't end up with hundreds of them.

I like to see the polls for a couple of reasons

1) To get input from people outside of the Calgary group

2) It's a good way to keep a discussion focused and together. The problem with the Calgary thread is it moves along quickly, and there are several topics going at the same time.

I couldn't disagree more. This argument makes no sense whatsoever. Every other city has there own extra threads, what applies to the Calgary forumers should apply to everyone else.

I suppose we could do that, but then why allow anyone to create a thread? They either need to have it where there is only the construction thread for each city and no other threads allowed, or have anyone free to post a new thread.

Perhaps we could have a construction only section for all of Canada, which would be only be one construction thread per city, and a general topic section for all of Canada, in which people could post whatever they want.

Naturally the general topic section would become full of useless garbage like the skybar, but that's a whole other topic.

I don't think it's a big deal myself. Right now a large portion of the threads are Calgary related, but it varies from time to time.

A quick look at the first page shows the following amount of threads (outside of the sticky threads) for each city or province

CGY: 12
VAN: 11
WPG: 8
Neutral: 5
Edm: 4
BC: 4
Alta: 2
Man: 2

So yeah, Calgary does have allot, but it changes. Right now Calgary seems to have more than usual.

Yeah, I have no problem with them as long as there isn't one for every project that comes along. Because if every city did that it would be a mess here. I do like seeing the major projects from any city though.

Personally I mainly just look at Edmonton and Calgary specific threads since those are the two cities I spend most of my time in and the two cities I have lived in. I like seeing stuff from other cities too, but time keeps me away most of the time.

Agreed...I think its a great idea for major projects, but a formal poll for every development on page 1 of the Calgary thread would be excessive.
