View Full Version : Starbucks Invasion in SW Ontario

London has about 60 Tim Horton's locations (I am not kidding), but now it seems like Starbucks is building like crazy. Two years ago we had 2locations in Chapters. Now there are 8 locations and 2 more under construction. Is Starbucks taking over your city? What is the next chain to come: Caribou Coffee or Panera Bread?

Strangely enough, I don't think there is one single location on the Quebec side of the river..

Huh! Funny! There are plenty of them in Montreal!

I was told by some friend that Tim Hortons was all over the place in the ROC. 60 locations in a city 0f 400,000, is just ridiculous! I don't think we have 20 Tim Horton's locations in Greater Montreal!

London has 65 Tim Horton's - and that's not even including St. Thomas!

Wow thats lots of Tim Hortons in London. There are 74 in metro Edmonton (includes all surrounding communities) and we have 2.5 X the population. With that I think I see them everywhere I can only imagine if we had that much more TImmy's locations.

Now for starbucks we have 41 according to their website however I know of 2 more locations downtown that do not appear. So I would hazzard to guess that there are more that are missed in Edmonton.

Not sure about second cup as I could not get the website map to work.

Yes, their plans are to have one "on every corner". kinda crazy. Bankers Hall now has two - one on the main floor, and one on the second floor (Second Cup had done that in one or two office buildings as well several years ago).

Even in my suburb way on the edge of the city (Shawnessy), there are four within a few blocks - one next to a Co-op, one in the Safeway, one in the Chapters, and a stand-alone a block north.

There's 2 Starbucks in Hamilton. They dropped one on Upper James just to test the market in Hamilton since they know Hamilton is Tim Horton's bitch.

It's not rare to see two Tim Horton's in one intersection, usually with a typical Tim Horton's store and another with just the Tim Horton's express.

Starfucks outlets are becoming ubiquitous.

By the way, you are wrong about the # of Tim Horton's outlets in London.
There are at least 60 here on campus at Western, plus 800 or so along Wonderland Road alone. I would estimate that in London, there are at least 573000 Tim Hortons. And every stinking one of them is always crowded here in the land of the drive-thru.

I think you can get Starbucks coffee at some hotel downtown as well? Not sure if it's a full-fledged location, but I remember somebody telling me about it.

Tim's only has 3 locations in Hull (the old city). One is in a government building and is only open during public servant working hours.. so I'd guess that's pushing a little more than a couple of hours per day.

There was an article last year in the Herald that mentioned property values went up in neighbourhoods where a Starbuck's existed...that was before they launched their "one on every corner" expansion plans though.

Truthfully, I'd be just as content if every one downtown Calgary closed, and one Caffe Artigiano opened. Or, if Kicking Horse actually tried opening a store.

Vancouver has thurlow and robson where they are across from each other - rumour for a while was they were going to add a third one but it never happenned

in starbucks insane news - they are expanding in the UK - they will be opening 1 starbucks every two weeks for the next years in London - that is insane!

as well they are opening up in india and have huge plans for there

Vancouver doesn't have that many new ones that i can think of - they have been opening a lot of drive thurs recently - 3 on the way into downtown opened in the last couple of years

'tis the case in many markets with a lot of Starbucks. In Calgary, there is one in the Safeway at 8th and 12th and one right across the street on the SE corner of 8th and 12th; one in Sears downtown and one kitty corner at 8th Ave and 4th St; one in the Marda Loop Safeway and another storefront one across the parking lot, two in Bankers Hall, two in Petro Canada...

SpongeG
01-18-2007, 12:07 AM
ah yes its like that here - there is one in sears and one across the street on granville

but when starbucks is inside safeway or chapters its not a real corporate store but a licensed concept or franchise

the one is Sears is actually CARA foods

my friend worked at that one had couldn't work at "real" starbucks as he called them - his room mate worked at a "real" one and was able to pick up shifts at a number of stores

I wonder if they will ever reach saturation point - when i was in Toronto in 1992-1994 I can only remember 2 starbucks as tehy were pretty rare at that time

I know Berri UQAM has one.. or had one. if there are more, I'm sure they are all at the downtown stations... every stop outside of downtown doesn't have much retail presence, save for a newsstand or convenience store.

I think Couche-Tard has some deal with Dunkin Donuts to serve their shit. Anyway, Dunkin's coffee is nasty.. their idea of bringing out the full bodied flavor is letting it cook on the hotplate for a few days. :yuck:

Most starbucks in Quebec are either owned or franchises of CVI (coffee vision holdings) which company in return is owned by a mtl guy and some guy in lebanon.

However, there are some locations which are not listed as CVI starbucks in the store locator (about 5 of them out of the 26 starbucks in montreal) so i'm wondering if those are corporate locations. Including the one at Montreal Trudeau airport

Starbucks in Canada

On March 1st, 1987, Starbucks opened its first Canadian store, Seabus, in Vancouver, B.C. In 1995, Starbucks formed an alliance with Chapters, Inc., the Canadian bookstore chain. The next year marked the first stores in the Ontario market, with the January 20th opening of 5 stores throughout the greater Toronto area. To date, Starbucks Coffee Canada has over 400 company-operated stores and over 100 licenced concept stores across the country.

I was pleasantly surprised to be informed that Starbucks isn't franchised. I really didn't know this after going there consistently for the last 4 years.

So now I get the scope on how massive they are. I was pondering the idea of opening my own on Jasper Avenue - but maybe there is another alternative to American Coffee. :) - Second cup requires a $25000 buy in and $350,000 (and up) in reno/advert/construction costs.

I hate to say it, but I prefer Starbucks over it's Canadian competitor, Second Cup. SC really really needs to get some better, stronger coffee.

I thought Safeway would be a strange location, but there are always lineups there.

It's part of Safeway's new 'lifestyle' theme. That's why there is lots of fake wood, a sushi bar, and earth tones. Earth tones just scream 'We are in touch with your urban needs! Look! We have a Starbucks!! Shop here!!'

/\ Typically Starbucks has far more attractive girls working behind the counter than Second Cup. That is the most important criteria when choosing a coffee shop.

One of the girls at the Starbucks in the Safeway I work at, after about 4 months, turned into a guy. Well he was a guy all along but he looked and sounded like a girl. They're still Starbucks though. They have the logo, the peppermint mochachino dark coffee latte chino mocha frappa chino (I don't go to Starbucks very often, so my coffee-related vocabulary is very limited.) chino, they have everything about Starbucks, except the condescension. And even then, they only lack that because people only ever stop there when they're waiting for the bus.

A Globe and Mail interview with a Toronto Starbucks rep confirmed what many already know.
He/she said - "we don't go into neighbourhoods until it has nicely revitalized. Other shops and services come in over the years and turn a dead strip into a vibrant one, and then we come in." And then (based on Toronto's experience) the rest of the street becomes an 'outdoor mall' instead of a true vibrant neighbourhood with a mix of chains and local shops...yes, property values go up - way up. Too high to sustain all the hard-working businesses that took a risk to invest in the neighbourhood in the first place.
I say "we're ahead in Hamilton" because we've had a massive influx of artists, gallery owners, cafe owners etc...into our downtown in the past 5 years. So far almost everyone I've spoken to has said "I finally got pushed out of Toronto...no more cheap, up and coming neighbourhoods to call home. They've all gone corporate and only the big chains can afford to locate there."
I hope they keep flocking to Hamilton. So far, the results have been great.
