An interesting article about the mess that DiscoverVancouver.com has become.

http://www.westender.com/portals-code/list.cgi?paper=49&cat=23&id=814241&more=

Most Vancouver forumers are probably aware of this site, and how the message board is just a forum for trash talk, with no real info on Vancouver. As many tourists use it to get REAL info, this article was published to try and get the moderators to do something. Take a read to see how bad forums can get...

For those who have never been on DV, don't waste your time. That site is truly disgusting! Foul-mouthed idiots who can only talk about gross, demented, sexist, racist topics. What a way to promot Vancouver :yuck:

its awful - it was good a while back but it has degenerated into pro-china, anti everything else

I wouldn't be surprised if none of them were even from Vancouver.

SpongeG

it's stupid too because you don't have to register at all and you can change your username with every post

a lot of people have gone there asking about moving to the city and by the end of the thread they are like maybe i won't move there after all

So I went back to DV to see if they have cleaned up their act; not at all! Still the same loosers talking smack about absolutely everything! Still as pathetic as ever. :(

rrrrright, because none of those assholes could be from Vancouver? The ones who, when somebody posts about thinking about moving to Calgary or Edmonton, let loose a flurry of dozens of posts about how no city can touch Vancouver and every other city is a complete shithole?

vid
01-21-2007, 04:39 AM
No, I meant the ones that were just spewing racist shit. I wouldn't find it unusual if someone from another city was posting that, claiming to be there, to damage Vancouver's reputation.

But of course, you ARE much more smart than I am, so you MUST be right.

:haha: You tell em!

That website bashes every city, especially Winnipeg, and it's people mainly from centres like Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. That site is just down-right embarrasing.

I don't think I've had the pleasure of visiting this site. I was reading a local paper (the January 18th-24th West Ender) recently and the article indicated the site will require a login in about 6 months. So I don't think too much will change until then.

they also post a lot of porn

the worst has to be the pro china - china is so much better than vancouver stuff that gets posted

DV has always been a joke, but that is not my problem. It is a shame on Vancouver and I wished that the Vancouver internet community would band against DV and put pressure on them to clean it up. It really reflects poorly on Vancouver.

I love Mike's excuse. 6,000 postings in a day makes it tough. First of all, 6,000 postings in a day? Holy spam bots batman! Secondly, if it is that far out of control and you choose to ignore it (when you admit that it doesn't paint a good picture of Vancouver), then SHUT IT DOWN!

Mike, your excuse is lame. It is simply poor management on YOUR part that is painting this unfair and inaccurate picture of Vancouver.

I remember during the 2004 RAV Line voting, Global TV used Discovery Vancouver forum as a legitimate source of public opinion. I wonder if Global TV will admit they are wrong in light of this....

SpongeG
01-22-2007, 03:22 AM
oh GLobal also went to Dark-Vancouver to do some digging about when those two "goth" people went missing and had been found dead in an apparent suicide thing

they (global) really pissed off the forum regulars and they even closed it up as much as they could during that period to outsiders

All they need to do is set it up so that you need to register to post. That way they can ban spammers/racist people, and the board will clean up in no time

They don't want to do that though, because that would mean less people coming to the site, which = less advertising $$

It was never high quality, but it has taken a serious nose dive in the past couple of years. I used to peruse the site out of passing interest and I don't remember seeing the horrifying garbage I''ve seen today on that site.

One of the Calgary forumers went on there and put up a post asking advice about moving to Calgary. It was hilarious, there was a boatload of venemous responses in about 5 minutes. Pretty sad site.

I had the patience to read an entire, 4 page long thread, called:
"vancouver- most boring city in canada"
started by a european, and apart from some roughness, it was very interesting!

This thread just explains the big difference that sadly separates Canadians and Europeans; before coming here i'd never thought that our cultures were so different.

- Canadians find Europe overpopulated, we find Canada boring
- Canadians find Europeans rude and sad, we find canadians fake and shallow
- Canadians enjoy BBQ's, light chats, outdoors, we enjoy partying, deep chats, indoors and outdoors alike (mostly beaches:D ).
- Canadians never complain and never want to hear someone complain, we always complain but we're sympathetic with whoever's complaining.
- Canadians think Canada is the best place to live, we think our country is the worst place to live until we actually leave, and realize we had it better.

I've met few Americans in my life, and i have to admit I had way more empathy with them that with Canadians, so oddly I think Americans are more similar to Europeans.

Does it make any sense?:sly:

EDIT: i spotted another difference! Canadians marry at 18-22 y.o., we marry at 30 y.o., just because we think that marriage is the end of the fun.

No it doesn't make any sense. I've travelled to Europe several times, and lived there briefly. Out of the numerous Europeans that I've met, I've never met any that felt for similar to Americans.

Also, your comparisons of Canadians and Europeans are not accurate at all. The way you describe Europeans isn't the way they appear to us. Certainly not the way I saw them. They aren't much different from us.

- Canadians enjoy BBQ's, light chats, outdoors, we enjoy partying, deep chats, indoors and outdoors alike (mostly beaches:D )

Oh Please! Get your head out of the clouds.

I don't feel similar to Americans, i feel more similar to Americans then to Canadians. It doesn't mean that i hate Canadians or i feel better then them. I met several Europeans here and we overall feel the same, the difference is not so sharp and exaggerated but it's there.
