Agreed. I'm not so sure about keeping those banners in particular, but having different banners every season of clothes would be nice =) Let's make sure they are models from Vancouver.

Great photos guys.

Everybody has been taking some amazing pictures. Beautiful shots entheosfog (HDR treatment looks great), SFUVancouver (some great angles there), Yume-sama (loving the fish-eye lens), and Locked In (love the trees)!

That shot of Broadway & Cambie by SFUVancouver stood out to me. It's a great pic of course but what struck me was how bustling that area looks in it. I really feel the Canada Line has contributed significantly to the pedestrian bustle around the station areas (at least from what I've noticed around the ones closer to the Vancouver core). As another example, here is a shot I took Saturday by Yaletown-Roundhouse Station:

The Beetles are the art feature at King Edward Station on the Canada Line and the Rocket was part of Expo 86 and is located near the cambie St. Bridge.

Oct 29, 2009, 7:39 AM
I'm not too certain whether the Beetle installation is permanent. It is either part of the 2009-2011 Sculpture Biennale (in which case it is only permanent if at the end citizens vote to keep it and the City buys it, like what happened with a few at the end of the last biennale), or it is part of a series of Emily Carr grad student pieces which were added along the Canada Line. In the latter case I have no idea if they are meant to be permanent or not. However, it is installed between the sidewalk and a surface parking lot. I can't imagine the parking lot will last long being directly next to the station entrance. If that is the case I assume the Beetles will have to be moved otherwise they'll be blocking a large section of the front of any building going in there (not to mention getting in the way during construction).

Raggedy I hope you don't mind someone else answering.

Don't mind at all. :)

I'll just add in that the rocket has sentimental value for me as my great-grandfather was one of the sheet metal workers who constructed the original (built in 1936). The one presently at Cambie is a replica which was built in time for Expo '86.

Here's a pic of a more informative plaque beneath the rocket:

These are beautiful clouds, but they are indicative of a major/severe thunderstorm nearby. Taken on October 26th, 2009, at 5:15pm. The storm missed all of Metro Vancouver luckily, but to our south Bellingham/Mount Vernon got hammered. These cloud are so rare to see in Vancouver, that I've only ever seen them 3 times including this one in my whole life. The others were in July of 1997, where Metro Vancouver was put under a severe thunderstorm warning for probably the first and only time in it's history, and May of 2002.

How many years ago did you take that photo?

At least 3 or 4. I realize now that the view of BC Place Stadium is not like that from that vantage point now. The towers at Coopers Park would be in the way. Also, if they do eventually build towers immediately around BC Place Stadium the view as seen in this photo would show the stadium substantially obscured.

I'm a real newbie at posting pics so I'll try to make a point of including info about the date a pic was taken. Thanks! :-)

:previous: :previous: :previous:

Seeing footage of other cenotaph ceremonies around the country, I have to say I (biasedly) like the Vancouver cenotaph the most. The actual cenotaph itself and the setting. It sorta has an amphitheatre quality to it and having the dominion and flack buildings as a backdrop add a lot to it as well.

Also, the Flack building people are to be commended. Ever since the renovation of that building, they have placed that wonderful 'WE REMEMBER' banner there at each Remembrance Day ceremony. Good on them.

Delirium, that shot totally kicks ass! Look at all those buildings hehe.

This pic is a keeper for sure. A 2010 memento given that you can see the rings at anchor in Coal Harbour.

Is it any wonder I love this city.

What a beautiful end to today! I noticed a few new cranes, or newly raised cranes, are now sitting high above the skyline:

If I was the city I would PAY sears to put a wrap on that building. I don't care if it is Mario and Sonic or what, but if any building needs a wrap for the Olympics it's Sears. But noo... they won't even power-wash the damn mould off it. If Pyongyang can clean up their evil pyramid, we should be able to clean up the Sears building.

Excellent photos all around.

Yume, that fisheye lens is sick. Love it!

Great skyline/crane shot, enthoesfog. I'm assuming the cranes are for the YMCA and Capitol towers.

It's cool to see the giant Canadian flag getting so much attention. So simple, yet so effective.

Here's a shot from taiscapes on flickr showing off the flag from the air.

The weather has been absolutely AMAZING. I can't believe how lucky we have been to have such clear blue skies. It has been amazing for taking photos, and I couldn't help but go outside with my cameras and do that once again :P Unfortunately I slept through the Santa Claus parade (yeah, I'm that lazy), I went out AFTER the parade to soak in the amazing atmosphere of having hundreds of thousands of people on the streets, on Robson, on Granville. Christmas carols being sung, musicians playing their instruments... it was great. Anyways, some photos from today... as you may have guessed.

Yue Minjun’s "A-maze-ing Laughter" - this piece is amazing, and it's awesome to see so many people "playing" with it.

Elvis Costello and Diana Krall were there to flick the switch for the tree. Tonight's event was also a big fundraiser for charities:
